On Monday, 29 September 2025, the General Council's letter to the confreres was posted on the General Direction's website. The letter deals with the subject of travels and movements.
Dearest confreres,
As we come to the end of the eighth session of the General Council, we are sending you this letter. We are at an important moment in the journey of our communities: the development of the Community Life Project! This is a precious time to reflect on the values that will guide us and on the concrete choices that will flow from them.
In this context, we wish to draw the attention of the communities to the importance of planning, from the beginning of the year, the travels and movements of confreres, especially between different countries, remembering that permission is the responsibility of the Circumscription Superior (cf. Vademecum SG 7.7)...

Cooperazione Internazionale (International Cooperation), a humanitarian organization that operates in 33 Countries – including Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Chad and Niger –, has recently drawn attention on 61 active conflicts, 233.000 people killed in incidents of armed violence (i.e., 638 victims every day, one every two minutes), and the more than 123 million civilians forced to flee. Compared with the estimates for 2024 by the Uppsala Conflict Data Programme (a programme of Uppsala University, Sweden, which monitors conflicts), in the last year the world witnessed a dramatic increase in armed conflicts which has brought about an equally drastic growth of humanitarian needs. Cooperazione Internazionale emphasizes the fact that over 300 million people worldwide are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection.
The war scenario in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is characterised by violence, atrocities, and mass displacement – at least 6.9 million are the internally displaced, among whom over 5 million are in the oriental provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri. These experience daily emergencies, in a context of clashes between the M23 rebels and the army of Kinshasa, as well as of bloody actions by other groups of rebels and locals formations which cannot be fully controlled. Harassments and violence against the civilian population are numerous and include also sexual violence. In the city of Goma, which was captured by the M23 rebels at the end of January, robberies and acts of banditry occur almost daily. It is precisely in those areas in the east of the country, where insecurity reigns supreme, that there is a need to provide immediate support to the population, with protection, shelter, food aid and maternity care. Only later on it will be possible to plan initiatives aimed at developing or resuming subsistence activities, including economic ones, as well as education, for in all these areas children are losing years and years of schooling due to instability.
Presently, we are two in the Xaverian community in Salerno: Deacon Valerius Jan Nahak and Fr. Rosario Giannattasio. We are looking forward to welcoming Fr. Vittorio Buongiovanni. Thanks to the active collaboration of the Laity, our Xaverian family was able to inaugurate the new pastoral year in three different moments, yet deeply intertwined, like threads that weave one single tapestry.
The first moment was with the youth. About thirty boys and girls spent a weekend with deacon Valerius and met Fr. Alessio Crippa, missionary to Thailand. The latter’s testimony helped the youth open their eyes and heart on a fragile yet lively Church – a Christian community consisting of just fifteen families along the border with Myanmar.
A second moment was dedicated to about seventy adults. They listened to Fr. Alessio Crippa during an evening of dialogue and exchange led by three young people. This was an occasion for renewing the passion for the mission ad gentes.
In the third moment, we were brought in the field of culture through the Palestinian recital “Jabra.” On this occasion, eighty adults had an intense experience, almost an experience of prayer, during which they were invited to defend the memory, the dignity and hope of a people. The event prompted us to carry out once again the role of educator which belongs to us by teaching acceptance, respect and conviviality towards differences.
Mission, the youth and culture: three areas of engagements which begin at the same time. This is a simple programme which, however, requires an act of faith and courage. As a Xaverian family in Salerno, we want to set out again like pilgrims of hope, with our gaze fixed on God and humanity. (Rosario Giannattasio s.x.)
On September 27th, 2025, we celebrated the 55th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. I joined the Xaverian Missionary in Parma on October 25th, 1964. From Parma we left for Desio (Milan). One month after my arrival in Desio, on November 28th, 1964, we received the news of the murder on that same day of three very young Xaverians in Congo. I felt proud to have joined a congregation that was offering to the Church and to the world those three martyrs…. After two years of training in Desio, in 1966, I entered the Novitiate in Nizza Monferrato. On September 15th, 1967, I made my Religious Vows. From Nizza Monferrato, I then moved to Parma for the theological studies. I made my Perpetual Profession on September 15th, 1970, and was ordained a priest on September 27th, 1970. During the last year of theological studies, and then full-time after the ordination, I was in charge of training the Mani Tese movement in the Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions. After completing theological studies, I went to Paris with some supervisors of Mani Tese and other trainers from different parts of Europe to get to know the problems of the Third World. Paris was a great disappointment: instead of introducing us to those problems, we were told that we already knew them. I felt an eruption of rebellion in me… Back in Italy, during a campo di lavoro (camp of work and training), I myself experienced the educational power of question marks: I literally tried to help the participants by drawing a huge “?” on the back of a poster promoting that campo di lavoro; I asked the participants to say what they knew and I would write and gather it where I had drawn the question mark… The huge Parisian disappointment turned into what would be my key attitude for the rest of my years in Italy (till the end of 1975) and for the rest of my almost 50 years in Indonesia…
Still on the subject of question marks. In mid-1979, while I was carrying out missionary work in the Mentawai Isles, the Ministry of Religion issued a decree stating that missionaries would have to leave Indonesia within a few years… I remembered that the Gospel of Mark revolves around a key question: Who is Jesus? (If we had had to abandon the mission, the Mentawai people themselves would have had the opportunity to continue to fall in love with this Jesus and form the Church.) Starting from that question, we began organising a series of training programmes which also helped me know better the Gospel and the Metawai culture…
In all these years, my deepest joy has been celebrating the Eucharist and proclaiming the captivating beauty of Jesus. (Daniele Cambielli s.x.)
There is no peace for the tormented Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, the poorest in the country. Jihadist guerrillas linked to the self-styled ‘Islamic State’ keep attacking local communities, villages and towns. The latest massacre took place on September 22nd, 2025 when rebels linked to IS attacked the port town of Mocímboa da Praia, killing and beheading several civilians. António Juliasse Ferreira Sandramo, Bishop of Pemba, during the plenary assembly of the Inter-Regional Meeting of Bishops of Southern Africa (Imbisa) which concluded on September 28th, in Manzini, eSwatini, launched an appeal: Towns and villages continue to be attacked, causing an increase in the number of refugees. Within the country, Cabo Delgado seems to be a world apart. The population survives by constantly fleeing from one place to another, finding nothing but precarious and unsafe shelters.

On Monday, 29 September 2025, the General Directions of the Xaverian Missionaries and the Missionaries of Mary the Missionary of Mary – Xaverian Sisters met in the community of Viale Vaticano 40, Rome.
There were various items on the agenda. After a moment of prayer, the meeting began with an update on the work of the Commission dealing with the Xaverian Charismatic Family. Convinced of the beauty and necessity of walking together, the members of the respective General Directions committed themselves to animating their confreres, sisters and lay people, especially during their official visits.
This was followed by an exchange on the Conference to be held in June 2026, in Parma, on the Human Face of the Xaverian and on the Year of the Xaverian spirit.
Attention then turned to the troubling situation in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighting in particular the consequences for young men and women in formation. Among other aspects, the difficulties of transferring them to other Circumscriptions were emphasised, given the current complex administrative situation.
Finally, the Missionaries of Mary – Xaverian sisters shared the reflection begun in the last Intercapitular Conference (Parma, October 2024) about initiating research for a possible new opening in Asia, asking for an opinion, based on the experience of the Xaverian Missionaries, on the possibilities present in this continent.
The two General Directions committed to meeting annually, with the aim of growing in fraternity and collaboration.(Giordana Bertacchini mmx)
On Monday, September 29th, 2025, as part of its formation plan, the community of the General House was honoured to host Card. Gianfranco Ravasi, who accepted the invitation to illustrate to the attendees the nature and initiatives of the Court of Gentiles. This is a foundation that, created in 2011 and led by the same Card. Ravasi, aims at promoting dialogue between believers and non-believers on great issues and on the challenges faced by contemporary society. The importance of the Foundation, which was established by Pope Benedict XVI, was later re-affirmed by Pope Francis. In EG 257 Francis stated that “As believers, we also feel close to those who do not consider themselves part of any religious tradition, yet sincerely seek the truth, goodness and beauty which we believe have their highest expression and source in God. We consider them as precious allies in the commitment to defending human dignity, in building peaceful coexistence between peoples and in protecting creation. A special place of encounter is offered by new Areopagi such as the Court of the Gentiles, where believers and non-believers are able to engage in dialogue about fundamental issues of ethics, art and science, and about the search for transcendence. This too is a path to peace in our troubled world.” Card. Ravasi’s words emphasised the need, particularly for us missionaries that by vocation are open to all those who do not know the Lord Jesus, to study and be in constant contact with culture (anthropology, relationship, society, interculturalism, solidarity, science and technique, neurosciences, AI, digital culture…), to embrace its problems, opportunities and challenges, so as to dialogue with the men and women of our time and be faithful witnesses of the Risen Lord. That familiar conversation, which was intended for a community of missionaries ad gentes and ad extra, continued with a common dinner. Also the confreres that are studying Italian and are taking part in the Year of Xaverian Spirituality could follow and enjoy the conversation. (the community in Viale Vaticano 40)

Indonesia
As you know, since Match 15th, we have stopped all public activities, including masses in the parish of Saint Matthew. We have canceled all the commitments with the parishioners; our seminarians are with us and we do not have any activity outside the Noviciate House. To avoid monotony, in the community we organized ourselves with a little creativity by increasing the moments of fraternity: meetings, music and singing contests, indoor and away sports tournaments, etc. Thank God, all this also helps to be more serene.
We are relatively safe even if there has been some anxiety and fear, since the number of infected people is increasing in our neighborhood. The lockdown does not seem to work very well, above all because more and more people are out of work; but they need to eat and support their families. So, thanks also to our benefactors, we try to share with the neighborhood what we have (food, money, …), helping them in these difficult moments the way we can. Let's pray for each other. (Fr. Suharno Leonardus)
Brazil
“We are all well, thank God, all confined in the house. It seems that no Xaverian has fallen ill with Covid – 19. The Regional Council Meeting will take place via Skype. Some situations in our Region need to be taken care of. Unfortunately, Brazil is going through two major crises: public health care, due to Covid-19, and the political situation, due to the president, who not only underestimates the problem, but behaves inadequately, not facing the needs of the situation, as “a mad man” who wants everything to continue the same as always: work, school, etc. If it were not for the judicial and legislative authorities trying to stop it, things would be worse. I am very happy that things are improving in Italy.
Here the situation is very critical; we do not know whether we are at the hight of the crisis or not yet. However, more than 600 people die every day, and the total number has now reached nine thousand. The amount of infections in a single day has already reached 10,000. Only God knows what lies ahead. (Fr. Rafael Villasenor, s.x.)
Japan
‘We, here in Japan, are waiting for the preventive measures that the government has updated for all citizens in an effort to reduce the pandemic of Covet19. There is not yet such a noticeable decline in the number of persons infected, but there are urgent needs for school, work, travel, human relations …, ”foot pounding” to resume “almost” normal life.
Changes are expected from the second week of May. But, even after that date, we will continue to disinfect our hands many times a day and talk by filtering words through the mask! We too will have to take a cautious approach as we provide for the needs of our parish flock. Who knows if they will return “hungry” for the Mass, of meeting each other, of chatting after Mass while they drink their cup of tea!??”

“Here, we are all fine! It seems that we are nearing the end of is pandemic, even if the vaccine has not yet been found. The government of Taiwan has not yet announced the beginning of the “all free” fase – which, here, has almost always been there. In fact, there have never been drastic restrictions, like in Italy or other countries. We are already on the fourth day without new cases of contagion!”

Inspired by the various biographies of Mons. Conforti, including that of Fr. Luca, the new updated text , which is proposed here, wants to be a tribute to the Man, to the Christian and to the Bold Pastor who walked in his time with the force of his faith, in obedience to the call of Jesus to witness Him alive in the Dioceses he served and through the Missionary Family that he had founded. May his witness continue to encourage many more.

México Circumscription
In the country, the situation is very uncertain since, unfortunately, our President does not want to understand how grave the pandemic is. He is facing the problem with mediocrity and a superficial attitude. Thank God, some governors and businessmen, as well as a good part of the population are acting properly. The Bishops Conference, from the beginning, gave clear guidelines to the ecclesial communities. The confreres are doing well and observing the required lockdown measures. Thanks to the digital means, we are in contact with each other and, at the Circumscription level, we have our meetings through these same means. Pastoral services, schools, minor seminaries are all closed at the moment.
In Mexico City, infections are increasing. That is why we avoid going out and our community isolation is tighter. We use alternative ways to get whatever we need for the house. We also avail ourselves of the help of some people from the outside. Thanks God, so far, in the community, we are all fine.
In this situation, in our community we are experiencing people’s goodness as well as God’s providence. In these days of pandemic, the celebrations of the Holy Week, the Thursday and Sunday’s Eucharist are broadcasted to all via Facebook. Many people appreciate and thank us for this sharing. Moreover, knowing that we are in quarantine, they show their solidarity with us. Many, spontaneously, bring us donations of all kind: from money to food (which they leave at the entrance door of the house). This is a beautiful sign of solidarity on the part of the people and a magnificent experience of God's Providence: He provides us with what is necessary even in these times which are difficult for all.
With the intercession of the Virgin of Guadalupe, we ask the Lord to free all people from this terrible pandemic. (Frs. Jorge Rosales & Rubén Macías S.)
Cameroon-Tchad Formation houses
In the houses of the Propaedeutic and the Philosophy of Bafoussam, they are all fine. The philosophy school of the diocesan seminary is closed, but students continue to carry out the work assigned by the school at home. Those of the Propaedeutic continue their programmes, even though the external teachers do not come and the apostolate is suspended. For both stages, the internal activities continue normally (study, kitchen, cleaning, sports...) without external contacts.
In the theology community of Yaoundé, classes were suspended immediately after the Prime Minister's had issued the state of emergency Covid-19. The confreres had then gathered to discern how to live this period of emergency. They reorganized the community timetable and activities by taking precautions and proposing the continuous worship of the Eucharist, open to parishioners, in the parish of Jésus Bon Pasteur. Students ensured the presence of a community member every 30 minutes. The atmosphere in the community is fraternal, joyful and serene. (Fr. Antonio López V.)
Thailand Circumscription
"Restrictive measures to avoid contagion have been extended for another month, including the total lockdown from 10pm to 4am. Every day there are new infections even though the numbers are limited. Since the beginning of the epidemic, Thailand has recorded about 3000 infections. In Bangkok, more precisely, in the Khlong Toey slum, where the Xaverians reside, we cannot resume our formation activities with students and adults. During this time, every day the Xaverians, together with volunteers, distribute food, masks, soap and other useful things for the poor, avoiding contact with people, especially the sick and the children. Most of these goods are offered by some religious congregations, by restaurants, groups, associations and lay people from Thailand and abroad. In the North, too, activities are reduced to the distribution of food and useful material for the poor of the villages. Fathers can go out regularly but must stay in their area. Only Fr. Alessio C. is in quarantine, because of a trip he had to Bangkok to renew his visa. The government announced the reopening of schools in July. But it is probable that as early as June, some activity will be resumed. We are taking advantage of this quarantine period to translate our Constitutions into Thai, with the help of the local catechists who live with us " ( April 30, 2020, Fr. Alex Brai)
The Philippines Circumscription
So far, the official cases of Covid-19 are more than 8,000 and the confirmed deaths are just under 600. The Philippine Government has further extended the extraordinary quarantine measures to 15 May. The administration is trying to mitigate people's hardship with economic and material aid. Many, hope for an imminent reopening. Unfortunately, new cases continue to appear everywhere, albeit on a much smaller scale than in the European countries and the United States.
We continue to be stuck in the house, carrying out the "usual" common activities and taking charge of all those services that were entrusted to the external staff: kitchen, cleaning, laundry. The activity in the two parishes we administer is much reduced and has got mostly to do with charitable initiatives. We now have more time for reading, meditation and even for a bit of gymnastics.
Using the internet, the teachers of the theology school finished the school programme of the year online. Some of our brothers have been busy preparing and then streaming, religious celebrations, especially during the Holy Week.
Not being able to meet physically, the internet was used for the meeting of the delegation council. One of our theology students, upon the recommendation of the doctor who had been assisting him for a couple of weeks, was placed in confinement in a special centre by the health authorities as a suspicious case of Covid-19. He is "well" and serene. We are in constant contact with him through cell phone. He will have to stay in the centre for two weeks, and we will not be able to see him. He has undergone a special test and we will know the outcome in a few days. Fr. Cesar, who had accompanied him, was also subjected to a "soft" test. As a precaution, he also must be isolated for 2 weeks at our house.
In this situation of discomfort, uncertainty and suffering that unites us with so many people, after doing our part we rely on God knowing that our help comes from Him. We are consoled by the words of Jesus: "I am the bread of life who comes to me will not be hungry and those who believe in me will not be thirsty." (April 30, 2020 - Fr. Emanuele Borelli sx)

Last Friday, the 17th of this month, a part of the city of Uvira, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was submerged by rainwater and spilling rivers. This flood has caused enormous damage. The dead are counted by dozens, the exact number is unknown since many people are still missing, some buried under mud and others dragged by the water into Lake Tanganyika. Roads are broken and bridges washed away; according to official records, over 3,500 houses have been destroyed, and a total of 77,790 people belonging to about 5,500 families affected in one way or another. Even the house of Xaverian Sisters was damaged and it is now uninhabitable. Our house of Kilomoni community, that is on the peripheries of Uvira, was not damaged even though it lies in affected area.

“In the State of Parà, the pandemic caused by the Covid-19 is particularly affecting the city of Belèm. In recent days, the number of infected people is growing exponentially; deaths are also increasing. The Confreres of the Xaverian Communities of Belèm-Regional House, Parish of St. Francis Xavier and Formation House of Ananindeua are all well and observe the restrictive measures established by the government and by the Church to protect themselves from contagion: isolation in the house, social distance, use of mask and disinfectants and avoid assembly. Greetings to all, and we wish you the best.” (Fr. Saúl Ruiz Álvarez)

“We are all well and we keep in touch with messages and videos almost every day. This new situation also challenges us to maintain the spirit of community without being able to physically be together. May the Lord help us to make up for the lack of physical closeness through a greater quality of our lives and of our relationships. After almost four months, schools are preparing o reopen, but much uncertainty remains. Businesses have resumed work as well as commercial activities. However, the economy is struggling in its effort to recover and we are all concerned.”

The "50 giorni” video of ongoing formation, in Italian and multilingual version, was conceived and assembled by Fr. Gabriel Arroyo, with the collaboration of the participants - 19 Xaverians from 6 nations - at the course, which took place in Tavernerio (Como) from 15 September to 5 November 2019. The video is a storytelling that describes what the "50 giorni" activity has been or has not been. It has not been a professional-update itinerary for pastoral qualification, but an occasion for renewal and care for the person of the missionary, after his first experience in mission. Seven weeks to reflect on oneself and one's own experience; seven weeks to heal in oneself the wounds of the mission. For missionaries, these “50 giorni” are not a luxury or a waste of time, but a necessity. In short, the "50 giorni" were a special time in order to have a more realistic view of the world, of the Church, of the missionary ministry, of consecrated life, but also of oneself. A special time for Xaverians to dream together a different mission, at the service of the world and the local Church.

The Eucharistic Celebration in memory of our deceased confreres during this period, in particular remembering Fr. Tomé Ernesto, Fr. Rizzi Giuseppe and Bro. Gregato Lucio, unforgettable coworkers in our Mission of Burundi, concluded the three days event of permanent formation and intense community life.

All of them have been distributed by our pastoral area leaders. Moreover, we are committed to continuing to help these indigent brothers and sisters of ours, according to our possibilities.

Fr. Aimé concludes: “Having been recently sent to a Formation House, since last September, after four years of mission ministry in the Philippines and two years of Study in Paris, and after having followed this session, I understand that the first to be formed is precisely the Formator himself or herself and that he or she must be leader for himself or herself before being one for others! This session helped me to always highlight three elements: our charism, our spirituality and our mission. A sincere THANK YOU to the Xaverian Family for this beautiful opportunity of Permanent Formation with experienced and competent persons who have been able to encourage us.”
