Venerdì 24 marzo 2023 ricorre la XXXI Giornata dei Missionari Martiri: “di me sarete Testimoni”. La celebrazione è collocata nel giorno dell’uccisione di San Óscar Arnulfo Romero, avvenuta nel 1980, a memoria del suo impegno al fianco del popolo salvadoregno fino alla fine. Nel 1992 l’allora Movimento Giovanile delle Pontificie Opere Missionarie, oggi Missio Giovani, propose alla Chiesa la celebrazione di una giornata che facesse memoria di quanti ogni anno “perdono” la vita nel proprio servizio pastorale e missionario. I giovani scelsero come data il 24 marzo, per testimoniare che le sorelle e i fratelli uccisi, poiché fedeli al Vangelo del Signore Gesù fino all’ultimo respiro, sono germogli di vita nuova nel cuore dei popoli e culture.

DAY OF THE MISSIONARY MARTYRS: Friday, March 24th, 2023
Friday, March 24th, 2023, will mark the XXXI Giornata dei Missionari Martiri (XXXI Day of the Missionary Martyrs): “you will be my witnesses.” This celebration takes place on the anniversary of the assassination of St Óscar Arnulfo Romero, which occurred in 1980, memorial day of his commitment to stand with the people of El Salvador till the end. In 1992, the then Movimento Giovanile delle Pontificie Opere Missionarie (Youth Movement of the Pontifical Mission Societies), nowadays Missio Giovani (Missio Youth), proposed to the Church the celebration of a day in remembrance of all those that, every year, “lose” their lives in pastoral and missionary service. The youth chose March 24th to proclaim that these sisters and brothers, who were murdered because of their determination to remain faithful to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus till the end, are sprouts of new life in the hearts of peoples and cultures.
