A seguito del terremoto di magnitudo 7,8 che ha colpito al largo di Maasim, nella provincia di Sarangani, la mattina di lunedì 8 giugno 2026, sono stati segnalati danni ingenti in diverse zone di Mindanao. Mindanao è la seconda isola più grande delle Filippine e la settima isola più popolosa al mondo. Si trova nella regione meridionale dell'arcipelago.

Secondo i dati forniti dal governo, il disastro ha causato 37 vittime, 479 feriti e quattro dispersi, mentre oltre 1.100 aule scolastiche sono state danneggiate. Il terremoto ha inoltre causato evacuazioni, la sospensione delle lezioni, la cancellazione di voli e danni strutturali in varie province, con General Santos City tra le zone più colpite.

Following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Maasim, Sarangani on Monday morning, June 8, 2026, significant damage was reported across several areas in Mindanao. Mindanao is the second-largest island in the Philippines, and seventh-most populous island in the world. It is located in the southern region of the archipelago.

According to government reports, the disaster resulted in 37 deaths, 479 injuries, and four missing persons, while more than 1,100 classrooms were damaged. The earthquake also caused evacuations, class suspensions, flight cancellations, and structural damage in various provinces, with General Santos City among the hardest-hit areas.

Although the Xaverian Missionaries do not have a community in the affected regions, several of our Philosophy students come from Mindanao. We are grateful to report that all of them and their families are safe. While they experienced the strong tremor, none of their homes sustained damage.
