Vari confratelli della comunità di Viale Vaticano, venerdì 02 febbraio 2024, hanno partecipato con molti altri membri degli Istituti di Vita Consacrata e delle Società di Vita Apostolica alla celebrazione eucaristica presieduta da papa Francesco in occasione della Festa della Presentazione di Gesù al Tempio, nella Basilica di San Pietro.
Al loro ritorno a casa, durante la cena, lo scambio su alcuni punti trattati nell’omelia del papa, ha vivacemente orientato la conversazione. Ciascuno sottolineava un particolare aspetto dell’insegnamento, altri lo completavano:
“…l’attesa di Dio è importante per il nostro cammino di fede. Ogni giorno il Signore ci visita, ci parla, si svela in modo inaspettato e, alla fine della vita e dei tempi, verrà…La cosa peggiore che può capitarci, è scivolare nel “sonno dello spirito”: addormentare il cuore, anestetizzare l’anima, archiviare la speranza negli angoli oscuri delle delusioni e delle rassegnazioni…”
“…Il primo ostacolo che ci fa perdere la capacità di attendere è la trascuratezza della vita interiore. È quello che succede quando la stanchezza prevale sullo stupore, quando l’abitudine prende il posto dell’entusiasmo, quando perdiamo la perseveranza nel cammino spirituale, quando le esperienze negative, i conflitti o i frutti che sembrano tardare ci trasformano in persone amare e amareggiate…”
“…Il secondo ostacolo è l’adeguamento allo stile del mondo, che finisce per prendere il posto del Vangelo. E il nostro è un mondo che spesso corre a gran velocità, che esalta il “tutto e subito”, che si consuma nell’attivismo e cerca di esorcizzare le paure e le angosce della vita nei templi pagani del consumismo o nello svago a tutti i costi…”.

“VINEGAR IN THE HEART”
On Friday, February 2nd, 2024, several confreres of the community in Viale Vaticano joined many other members of Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in attending the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Pope Francis in St Peter Basilica on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord to the Temple.
After returning home, during supper, an exchange on some points of the Pope’s homily rendered the conversation much lively. Each one underscored a particular aspect of the teaching, other would complement it:
Waiting for God is also important for us, for our faith journey. Every day the Lord visits us, speaks to us, reveals himself in unexpected ways and, at the end of life and time, he will come… The worst thing that can happen to us is to let “our spirit doze off”, to let the heart fall sleep, to anesthetize the soul, to lock hope away in the dark corners of disappointment and resignation…
The first obstacle that makes us lose the ability to wait is neglect of the interior life. This is what happens when weariness prevails over amazement, when habit takes the place of enthusiasm, when we lose perseverance on the spiritual journey, when negative experiences, conflicts or seemingly delayed fruits turn us into bitter and embittered people.
The second obstacle is adapting to a worldly lifestyle, which ends up taking the place of the Gospel. Ours is a world that often runs at great speed, that exalts “everything and now,” that is consumed in activism and seeks to exorcise life’s fears and anxieties in the pagan temples of consumerism or in entertainment at all costs.
