P. Ivaldo Casula

Il 5.4.2007, Giovedì Santo, alle ore 21.20 all’Ospedale diocesano di Makeni (Sierra Leone) è morto, per grave infezione virale, il P. Ivaldo Casula. Aveva 63 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Guasila (Cagliari) il 28.11.1943.
Entrato tra i Saveriani nel 1956, fece la 1.a e 2.a media a Macomer, la 3.a a Cremona, il ginnasio (59-61) a Zelarino, il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli con la prima professione il 3.10.62. Passò quindi a Desio per il Liceo (62-63) concluso a Tavernerio (63-65). Nel contesto della strategia saveriana di allora, che mirava ad incrementare la presenza dei Saveriani fuori dell’Italia, il P. Ivaldo fu inviato per gli studi teologici a Cardross (Scozia). Fu ordinato presbitero a Glasgow il 27.9.70: “So di non esserne degno, ma so anche che il Signore si serve dei deboli per le sue opere. Desidero con gioia essere sacerdote missionario per essere d’aiuto all’amore di Cristo che vuole raggiungere tutti gli uomini... [per] venire incontro all’uomo, che tende al conseguimento della sua realizzazione piena e integrale in Dio” (2.7.70).
Dopo l’ordinazione il P. Ivaldo rimase in Scozia a Coatbridge, incaricato dell’animazione vocazionale e dell’Ufficio Stampe della Regione (70-78). Nel 1978 fu inviato a Roma dove, all’Università Pontifica Salesiana, conseguì il baccalaureato in Scienze dell’Educazione.
Alla conclusione degli studi fu destinato alla Sierra Leone. Vi rimase tre anni (80-83): “di esperienza missionaria non ne ho fatta molta, ma penso che la mia posizione qui al centro - (segretario del Vescovo) in contatto diretto con i Padri, le Suore, con i Seminaristi come Vocations Director, e con tutta la gente che si riversa qui con tutti i loro problemi - mi stia dando un po’ la visione di ciò che significa essere missionario in Sierra Leone” (15.10.82).
Nel 1983 fu richiamato in Gran Bretagna, formatore e poi Rettore della teologia di Londra-Finchley. Nell‘85 i suoi studenti furono inviati a Chicago (USA), P. Ivaldo li accompagnò come formatore ed economo di quella comunità (85-87). I due anni ‘americani’, risultarono piuttosto impegnativi: “Noi sentiamo di essere una comunità ‘internazionale’. Stiamo affrontando qui le difficoltà che si incontrano in missione, con la presenza di Saveriani di varie culture” (1986). “I due anni in America mi hanno fatto capire quanto ricca e quanto tragica allo stesso tempo sia la nostra varietà umana, fatta di tanti colori di pelle, di diverse tradizioni e di mille culture” (Missionari Saveriani, novembre 1992).
Nel 1987 ritornò in Gran Bretagna dove fu Maestro dei novizi a Londra (87-88) e poi animatore missionario e vocazionale a Coatbridge (88-92).
Concluso il suo servizio in Gran Bretagna (1992), dopo due anni di aggiornamento a Roma, fu destinato all’Italia dove ricoprì l’ufficio di Rettore della comunità di Macomer (94-00) e, dal 2000 al 2004, a Brescia, di Direttore del Movimento CEM.
Nel 2005 era ritornato in Sierra Leone, Xaverian formator and Assisting the Fatima Institute.
A P. Ivaldo sono stati chiesti molteplici servizi, con continui salti culturali. Al riguardo scriveva al Superiore Generale (26.1.00): “Dio sa che non mi sono risparmiato nei vari compiti a me affidati dall’obbedienza. Ancora prima del Noviziato ho messo la mia vita a disposizione del Signore Gesù. Da allora la mia vita non mi appartiene. Se il Signore lo desidera, può ancora usarmi perché anche per mezzo mio sia conosciuto ed amato da coloro che non sanno del suo amore. Questo è stato ed è l’unico desiderio della mia vita, il perché del mio soffrire e del mio gioire. [ ... ] Affido a Maria questo mio desiderio di continuare a lavorare per il Regno, con i doni che mi sono stati dati”.

Fr. Ivaldo Casula died of a serious viral infection on April 5 2007, in the diocesan hospital of Makeni (Sierra Leone).
Born in Guasila (Cagliari) on November 28, 1943, he was 63 years old.
He joined the Xaverians in 1956, and attended the first two years of secondary school in Macomer, the third year in Cremona, high school in Zelarono (1959-61), Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli and made his first profession on Oct. 3, 1962. He then moved to Desio for Liceo (1962-63) which he concluded at Tavernerio (1963-65). In the context of the Xaverian strategy at the time, which aimed at increasing the presence of Xaverians outside Italy, Fr. Ivaldo was sent to study Theology in Cardross (Scotland). He was ordained priest in Glasgow on Sept. 27, 1970: "I know I am not worthy, but I also know that the Lord uses the weak for his work. I joyfully desire to be a missionary priest in order to help the love of Christ reach all peoples, [to] help the human person, who tends towards total and integral fulfillment of self in God" (July 2 1970).
After his ordination, Fr. Ivaldo remained in Scotland, at Coatbridge, in charge of vocation animation and the Regionís Press Office (1970-78). In 1978 he was sent to Rome where he obtained the baccalaureate in Educational Sciences at the Salesian University.
Upon completion of his studies he was assigned to Sierra Leone, where he worked for three years (1980-83): "I havenít had much missionary experience, but I think that my position here at the center (he was the bishopís secretary) in direct contact with the Fathers, Sisters and Seminarians as Vocations Director, and with all the people who come here with all their problems is giving me something of a vision of what it means to be a missionary in Sierra Leone" (15.10.82).
In 1983 he was called back to Great Britain where he worked as formator and then Rector of the Theology community in Finchley, London. In 1985 his students were sent to Chicago (USA) and Fr. Ivaldo went with them as formator and treasurer of that community (1985-87). The two ëAmericaní years turned out to be quite demanding: "We feel that we are an international community. We are facing here the difficulties that we encounter in the mission, with the presence of Xaverians from various cultures" (1986). "The two years in the United States of America made me understand how rich and how tragic our human variety is at the same time, made up of many different colors of skin, different traditions and a thousand cultures" (Missionari Saveriani, November 1992).
He returned to Great Britain in 1987 as Novice Master in London (1987-88) and then as Missionary-Vocation Animator in Coatbridge (1988-92).
Upon completion of his service in Great Britain (1992), he spent two years of aggiornamento in Rome and was then assigned to Italy where he worked as Rector of the Macomer community (1994-2000) and, from 2000 until 2004, at Brescia, as Director of the Movimento CEM.
He returned to Sierra Leone in 2005, as a Xaverian formator and Assistant at the Fatima Institute. Fr. Ivaldo was asked to carry out many services with continuous cultural leaps. In connection with this, he wrote to the Superior General (Jan. 26, 2000): "God knows that I have never spared myself in the various tasks that were entrusted to me by obedience. Even before the Novitiate I put my life in the hands of the Lord Jesus. From then on my life does not belong tome. If the Lord so desires, he can use me so that he may be known and loved by those who know nothing of his love. This has always been the sole desire of my life, the reason for my suffering and my joy. I entrust to Our Lady my desire to continue to work for the Kingdom, with the gifts that have been given to me".
