Il 12 giugno 2010, a Parma in Casa Madre, alle 21.00 è morto il P. Giuseppe Chiarelli, consumato dal tumore per il quale era in cura a Parma dal febbraio del 2009.
Aveva 66 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Martina Franca (Taranto) il 10.05.1944.
Allievo del Seminario diocesano di Taranto e del Seminario Regionale di Molfetta fino alla prima Liceo, ha sempre provato interresse e ammirazione per i missionari. Nel 1962 la lettura di una lettera del P. Rolando Trevisan – scrive nella Scheda Anagrafica – «mi fece meditare sul problema delle missioni. Quindi decisi seriamente anche a costo di qualsiasi sacrificio».
Il 30 settembre del 1962 entrò nel Noviziato di S. Pietro in Vincoli. Il 3.10.1963 emise la Prima Professione; frequentò poi la seconda e terza liceo a Tavernerio; compì gli studi teologici a Parma dal 65 al 67 e dal 68 al 71 (dal 67 al 68 fu prefetto ad Alzano Lombardo); il 27.9.1970 fu ordinato presbitero a Parma.
I tratti caratteristici del P. Giuseppe sono puntualmente indicati nella presentazione alla Prima Professione: «È contento di legarsi al Signore con i santi Voti, religiosi e missionario, e di osservarli. Ama l'Istituto. Di buona ed edificante pietà. Ottimo lavoratore, si è occupato per diverso tempo delle pulizie e nutrimento dei polli e non si è mai ritirato dai lavori umili né li ha fatti con fatica. Si trova bene con i confratelli e questi con lui. Alle volte nel parlare è arguto; gioca volentieri».
Dopo l'ordinazione, dal 1971 al 1976 P. Giuseppe fu animatore interno a Salerno; dal 77 al 79 lavorò in Burundi; nel 1980 fu destinato al Brasile. Per il periodo di Salerno annotava nel Formulario di un'inchiesta del 1973: «È un lavoro nel quale mi trascino. Non riesco a comprendere l'utilità delle scuole apostoliche e soprattutto non sono all'altezza del grave compito di educatore». Eppure il suo Regionale gli dava atto della «dedizione con la quale ti doni ad un lavoro per il quale non ti senti tagliato» (19.6.73). Riguardo al Burundi, dopo appena due anni chiese e ottenne di cambiare missione. Ebbene, in queste vicende tutt'altro che facili, il P. Giuseppe rivela grande libertà e altrettanta fiducia nel dialogare con i Superiori: «Esattamente perché vi stimo – scrisse il 12.10.1992 – ho il coraggio di dirvi esattamente ciò che penso. … Però voglio aggiungere che, detto il mio pensiero, sono anche sempre pronto ad ascoltare i pensieri e i consigli degli altri».
In Brasile (1980-1992) fu Rettore e viceparroco a Piracicaba (81-85) e parroco a Lupianopolis (87-92): amato e apprezzato soprattutto dalla gente povera, dai malati e dai collaboratori nei servizi pastorali. Del resto il P. Giuseppe era profondamente convinto che «noi missionari annunciamo il Vangelo ai poveri, ma sono i poveri che ci evangelizzano e ci insegnano a vivere il Vangelo» (Missionari Saveriani 8.1.93).
Dal 1993 al 1999 fu vicerettore della Casa Madre per l'assistenza ai malati: servizio che egli assicurò con la delicatezza, la serenità, l'attenzione e dedizione che tutti gli riconoscevano.
Dal 2000 al 2008 lavorò nuovamente in Brasile: economo e collaboratore pastorale nel Seminario Saveriano di Londrina (2000-2008) e Vice parroco a Piracicaba (2008-2009).
Nel febbraio del 2009 un tumore lo obbligò a tornare a Parma, questa volta come ammalato. Percorse la dura via crucis della malattia «con il sorriso e la dolcezza che sempre lo accompagnarono e che restano per tutti una testimonianza sublime di fede» (P. Rino Benzoni, 20.6.10).
«Signore – è la preghiera della nipote Grazia alla conclusione della messa esequiale – ti ringraziamo per la vita del nostro caro P. Giuseppe. Egli nella sua esistenza ha trasmesso tutti i doni da te ricevuti: l'amore per Dio e per il prossimo, la gratitudine, la generosità e la pazienza. È stato punto di riferimento per la sua famiglia e testimone fedele della tua Parola.
Ci ha insegnato ad amarti e ringraziarti per qualsiasi dono e ad affrontare la sofferenza e la morte con coraggio e serenità. Ha superato ogni prova offrendola a Te, certo di non essere solo. Tutti noi che lo abbiamo conosciuto gli siamo infinitamente grati per tutto quello che ci ha donato. Siamo certi che ora riposa tra le tue braccia e che continuerà a proteggerci».

Fr. Giuseppe Chiarelli died of cancer on June 12 2010, in the Mother House, Parma, where he had been receiving treatment since February 2009.
Born in Martina Franca (Taranto, Italy), on May 10, 1944, he was 66 years old.
Before joining the Xaverians, he studied at the diocesan seminary of Taranto and the Regional Seminary of Molfetta until the first year of Liceo. He had always shown an interest and admiration for the missionaries, and a letter of Fr. Rolando Trevisan in 1962, «made me meditate on the problem of the missions. I therefore took a serious decision even at the cost of some personal sacrifice».
On Sept. 30 1962 he joined the Novitiate of S. Pietro in Vincoli. He made his First Profession on Oct. 3 1963 and then moved to Tavernerio for the second and third year of Liceo; he studied theology in Parma from 1965 until 1967 and from 1968 until 1971 (he was prefect in Alzano Lombardo in the year of 1967-68); he was ordained priest in Parma on Sept. 27 1970.
The characteristic traits of Fr. Giuseppe were described in the report presenting him for First Profession: «He is happy to consecrate himself to the Lord through the religious and missionary vows. He loves the Congregation. He has a good and edifying piety. He is an excellent worker and has taken good care of the chickens. He never shunned menial tasks and did them all willingly. He gets on well with his confreres and they are at ease with him. Sometimes he is witty in his speech and he enjoys games».
After his ordination, Fr. Giuseppe was the internal animator at Salerno from 1971 until 1976; from 1977 until 1979 he worked in Burundi; in 1980 he was assigned to Brazil. During his time in Salerno he responded to a questionnaire, speaking of his work: «I have to force myself to do this work. I cannot understand the usefulness of the minor seminaries and, above all, I am not up to the demands of the serious task of a formator». Yet his Regional Superior acknowledged his «dedication to a task for which you do not feel cut out» (June 19 1973). In Burundi, after just two years, he asked to change to another mission and his wish was granted. In all these difficult matters, Fr. Giuseppe manifested a great freedom and equal trust in his dialogue with the Superiors: «Precisely because I respect you, I have the courage to tell you exactly what I think… However, I want to add that, once I have shared my thoughts, I am also always ready to listen to the thoughts and the advice of others» (Oct. 12, 1992).
In Brazil (1980-1992) he served as Rector and assistant priest at Piracicaba (1981-85) and parish priest at Lupianopolis (1987-92). He was loved and appreciated, especially by the poor, the sick and those who collaborated in the pastoral ministry. Fr. Giuseppe was deeply convinced that «we missionaries announce the Gospel to the poor, but it is the poor who evangelize us and teach us how to live the Gospel» (Missionari Saveriani, Jan. 8 1993).
From 1993 until 1999 he served as vice-rector of the Mother House, assisting the sick confreres: his work was characterized by a discretion, serenity, attention and dedication that was acknowledged by all.
From 2000 until 2009 he worked again in Brazil as treasurer and pastoral assistant in the Xaverian seminary of Londrina (2000-08), and assistant priest at Piracicaba (2008-09).
In February 2009 at tumor forced him to return to Parma, this time as one of the sick. He traveled the difficult path of the via cruces of illness «with a smile and gentleness that always accompanied him and which were a sublime witness of faith for all» (Fr. Rino Benzoni, June 20 2010).
His niece Grazia said the following prayer at the end of the funeral Mass: «Lord, we thank you for the life of our beloved Fr. Giuseppe. Throughout his life he shared with us all the gifts he received from you: his love for God and neighbor, gratitude, generosity and patience.
He was a point of reference for his family and a faithful witness to your Word.
He taught us to love you and thank you for every gift, and to face suffering and death with courage and serenity. He overcame all trials by offering them to you, convinced that he was not alone.
All of us who knew him are infinitely grateful to him for everything that he gave us. We are sure that he now rests in you, and that he will continue to protect us».
May the Lord welcome him in the Eternal Banquet.
