P. Agostino Clementini

A Parma, in Casa Madre, alle 15.55 del 2 giugno 2010, è morto, per infarto miocardico acuto, il P. Agostino Clementini. Era a Parma da una decina di giorni.
Aveva quasi 84 anni, essendo nato a Urbisaglia (Macerata) il 6.8.1926.
P. Agostino entrò all'Istituto a Poggio San Marcello nel 1939. «Partii da casa –scriveva al P. Generale il 21.1.53– con l'intenzione precisa di farmi prete per andare dove il Signore non è ancora conosciuto. E il Signore mi guidò, a mia insaputa, proprio in un Istituto che ha quest'unico scopo». Fu una scelta che tre anni più tardi, quando si trattò di andare a Grumone per il ginnasio, dovette superare l'opposizione della famiglia che, preoccupata per la difficile vita in missione, avrebbe preferito che l'allievo missionario si facesse prete diocesano.
Nel 1945 P. Agostino fu ammesso al Noviziato e il 12.9.1945 emise la Prima Professione. Frequentò quindi le prime due classi del Liceo a Parma e la terza a Desio. Successivamente fece l'anno di prefettato a Massa Lucana (48-49). Concluse l'iter formativo con i quattro anni di teologia a Piacenza, dove il 21.3.1953 fu ordinato presbitero.
Era pronto per lavorare nella vigna del Signore: «Mio unico proposito è questo: "impendam ac superimpendar pro animabus" (mi prodigherò anzi mi consumerò per le anime)" (2Cor 12,15). Come e dove, deciderà Lui solo e me lo manifesterà a mezzo dei suoi rappresentanti» (21.1.53).
I Superiori lo destinarono all'Italia: aiuto economo nella comunità di Ancona (53-55), economo della casa di Piacenza (55-60). Impegno, questo, non indifferente, specialmente per un giovane di appena trent'anni. Si trattava di servire una comunità di circa ottanta teologi. E questo in un'Italia che arrancava verso il miracolo economico ma di fatto era ancora un paese agricolo. L'aiuto del popolo cristiano arrivava attraverso varie questue/raccolte: del frumento, del vino, della conserva, delle castagne. L'organizzatore di queste attività era il Padre economo il quale, inoltre, doveva curare le Giornate Missionarie, i Presepi missionari, le relazioni con i benefattori, gli acquisti, l'amministrazione contabile. Senza dimenticare che il miglioramento economico stava lambendo le comunità religiose e suscitava interrogativi, con risposte diverse, sul modo di vivere la povertà.
P. Agostino si rivelò «un economo diligente e capace che provvedeva alle necessità dei confratelli con premura fraterna e sapeva conquistarsi la simpatia e l’affetto dei benefattori» (P. Luca, Esequie). Da Piacenza in poi P. Clementini fu considerato, nel mondo saveriano, l'economo per antonomasia
L'aspirazione profonda del P. Agostino, però, rimaneva l'annuncio della salvezza ai non cristiani, come scrisse al P. Generale l'11.8.73: «La mia vocazione l'ho sentita sempre così dal giorno della mia Prima Comunione: essere prete tra quelli che non credono in Gesù» . Per questo nel 1961 accolse di buon grado la destinazione all'Indonesia. Purtroppo nel 1964 una grave dermatosi lo costrinse a rientrare in Italia. Nel 1967 fece un secondo tentativo. Pure questo di breve durata.
Ritornato in Italia prestò il suo servizio di economo ad Ancona (69-76), allo CSAM di Parma (76-79) e al Collegio Conforti di Roma (81-86).
Nel 1986 chiese e ottenne di dedicarsi, almeno per qualche anno, al ministero sacerdotale diretto e a tempo pieno. In questo contesto fu cappellano dell'Ospedale civile di Viareggio (87-90) e dell'Ospedale Nuovo di Imola (05-09). Dal 2003 fece parte della comunità di S. Pietro in Vincoli, incaricato anche della Pagina Missionari Saveriani che curò con gusto e fedeltà.
Negli ultimi anni era solito ripetere: "meglio rotti che arrugginiti". E spiegava in una lettera al P. Vicario (21.3.07): «Non occorrono grandi doti, basta un po' di cuore: sedersi vicino, un sorriso, una stretta di mano, una crocetta in fronte, una carezza ... e ti senti dire: "grazie, torna presto"».
Il Signore accolga nel suo Regno questo suo servo fedele.

Fr. Agostino Clementini died of a heart attack in the Mother house, Parma, on June 2, 2010. He had been in Parma for about ten days before he died.
Born in Urbisaglia (Macerata, Italy), on Aug. 6, 1926, he was almost 84 years old.
Fr. Agostino entered the Xaverians at Poggio San Marcello in 1939. He wrote to the Superior General on Jan. 21, 1953: «I left home with the specific intention of becoming priest, to go where the Lord is still unknown. And the Lord guided me, without my knowing it, to an Institute that exists for this sole purpose». Three years later, when he was due to move to Grumone for high school, he had to overcome the opposition of his family which, concerned about the difficult life in the missions, wanted him to become a diocesan priest instead.
In 1945, Fr. Agostino was admitted to the Novitiate and on Sept. 12 1945 he made his First Profession. He then attended two more years of high school at Parma and a third one at Desio. Thereafter, he served as prefect for one year at Massa Lucana (1948-49). He completed the formation program with four years of theology at Piacenza, where he was ordained priest on March 21, 1953.
He was ready to work in the Lord’s vineyard: «My only intention is this: “Impendam ac superimpendar pro animabus” (I am perfectly willing to spend what I have, and to be spent , in the interests of souls – 2Cor. 12:15). How and where, He alone will decide and He will reveal it to me through His representatives» (Jan. 21, 1953).
The Superiors assigned him to Italy: he served as assistant treasurer in the community of Ancona (1953-55), treasurer in the house of Piacenza (1955-60). This was a demanding task, especially for a young man who was only thirty years old. He had to take care of a community of about 80 theology students at a time when Italy, although it was slowly making progress towards a miraculous economic growth, was still very much an agricultural country. The help of the Christian people arrived through various forms of collections: grain, wine, jam, chestnuts. The organization of these activities belonged to the Treasurer, as well as the responsibility for running Mission Appeals, missionary Cribs activities, maintaining contact with the benefactors, shopping and financial accounting. It should also be remembered that economic growth was affecting religious communities and raising some questions, which received different answers, concerning the ways of living out poverty.
Fr. Agostino proved to be «a diligent and capable treasurer who provided for the necessities of the brothers with fraternal care and he won the affection of the benefactors» (Fr. Luca, at the funeral). From Piacenza onwards, Fr. Clementini was considered, in the Xaverian world, to be the quintessential treasurer.
Nevertheless, the profound aspiration of Fr. Agostino continued to be the proclamation of salvation to the non-Christians, as he wrote to the Superior General on Aug. 11, 1973: «I have always felt that his was my vocation since the day of my First Communion: I wanted to be a priest among those who do not believe in Jesus». Therefore, in 1961, he joyfully welcomed his assignment to Indonesia. Unfortunately, a serious dermatosis in 1964 forced him to return to Italy. In 1967, he made a second attempt, but this too was short-lived.
He returned to Italy where he served as treasurer at Ancona (1969-76), at the CSAM in Parma (1976-79) and at the Collegio Conforti in Rome (1981-86).
In 1986 he asked for, and obtained, permission to dedicate himself, at least for a few years, to direct priestly ministry on a full-time basis. In this context he served as Chaplain of a hospital in Viareggio (1987-90) and a hospital at Imola (2005-09). From 2003 onwards, he was a member of the community of S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he edited the local page of Missionari Saveriani showing good taste and fidelity in this work.
During his last years, he had the habit of saying: “better to be broken than rusty.” He explained in a letter to the Vicar General (March 21, 2007): «Good qualities are not essential; all that is needed is a good heart: to sit down next to someone, offer a smile, a handshake, make the sign of the cross on a forehead, a caress… and people will say “Thank You, please come back again soon”».
