P. CARLO GIROLA

Lavorò come aiutante a Gounou Gaya (’84-’88) e Economo Regionale (’86-’94).

Riposi in pace.

FR. CARLO GIROLA

Fr. Carlo Girola died tragically on 21 October 2016, in the vicinity of the town of Eseka, when the train he was travelling on from Yaoundé to Douala derailed.

Born in Oltrona San Mamette (Como-Italy), on 28 July 1948, he was 68 years old.

He was an adult vocation and lived at home until he was 26 years old (all the following quotes, except the last, are taken from an interview with Le Carillon Nogentais, December 2013) : “My parents’ faith was the school that raised me, my brother and my sister … I am grateful to my mother who taught me to be strong in times of difficulty and to my father who frequently said to me: “Always have the courage to be faithful”.

He was very involved in the parish community as an altar server, catechist and animator in the oratorio. He also discovered the catechesis of his Archbishop Montini, who presented the Christian life as involvement/commitment in daily life “and made me understand the beauty and the seriousness of the Gospel”.

In his socio-cultural context, young people were taught to work for a living. After elementary school, Fr. Carlo attended a professional/industrial training school (1959-62),  and the Istituto professionale di Como (1962-65), where he obtained a diploma as a mechanical designer. From 1965 until 1974 he worked for a company that specialized in electrical appliances.

He joined a group of his peers to deepen his knowledge of the Gospel and engage in initiatives of a social and charitable nature. These activities gave Fr. Carlo an ‘enthusiasm for the missionary life’.

He joined the Institute in the adult vocations community in Desio on 1 October 1974. After obtaining a high school diploma with specialization in teacher training (27 July 1977), he did Novitiate in Tavernerio and made his First Profession on 2 September 1978. He then moved to Parma for Theology and was ordained priest on 26 September 1982.

Since he was already 36 years old, he was assigned immediately to the missions. He studied French in Paris and arrived in the coveted mission of Cameroon-Chad in 1984. However, the beginnings were very difficult for him: the study of the Moussey language was anything but easy; he had some health problems; the pastoral ministry was very difficult from the one he knew and had studied and the human context of Chad was very different from the one in Europe. “I had some doubts as to my ability to cope in that context. Yet it was precisely in that situation that I experienced what it meant to ‘abandon myself’ to the Lord. I told myself that by enduring these difficulties I was fulfilling my religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience”.

He served as assistant priest in Gounou Gaya (1984-88) and Regional Treasurer (1986-94). In 1988 he was transferred to the area of Bongor. After studying the Massa language, he was entrusted with the pastoral care of Djouman and, subsequently, of Sieke and Bongor. He gave special attention to the catechumenate, which was based on the memorization of the Gospel because culture in Chad is transmitted orally. Obviously, he did not neglect the work for the social-economic improvement of the people (literacy schools, granaries for the village’s millet, multi-purpose rooms and football fields). From 1997 until 2002 he was a member of the Douala-Oyack community, where he was put in charge of missionary animation. He served as Regional Councilor (1991-94; 2000-2004) and Regional Superior (2004-2007). One of the tasks of the Regional Superior is to maintain contact with the confreres and Fr. Carlo preferred to travel by public transport. “Traveling by bus and train gave me the opportunity to meet people, listen to them speak in their own typical language and learn a great deal about their customs, lifestyles and problems”.

On 11 July 2007 he was elected General Councilor and was put in charge of the three Portuguese-speaking missions, finances, missionary-vocation animation and the Xaverian Lay Missionaries. “An experience which gave me the opportunity to get to know the confreres in Asia, Latin America and Africa”.

At the end of his mandate he spent one year on an aggiornamento course in Paris before returning to Cameroon in 2014, where he worked in the formation of the theology students and missionary animation.

On 18 October 1981, he wrote: “I ask the Lord to grant that I might live no longer for myself, but for the world, in accordance with the example of the One who called me to follow Him. I want to lose myself in the world for Christ, loving and suffering, and seeking out the people that the Lord puts in my path”.

May he rest in peace.
