P. Nicola Macina

Il 13.1.2014, a Parma in Casa Madre, verso le 17.30 è morto il P. Nicola Macina, per crisi cardiocircolatoria. Era prossimo ai 71 anni, essendo nato a Modugno (Bari – Italia) il 21 febbraio 1943.
Allievo del Seminario di Bari (Medie e Ginnasio) e di Molfetta (Liceo), entrò all’Istituto a Nizza Monferrato (Asti) nel 1961per il Noviziato. Emise la Prima Professione il 3.10.1962. “Generoso, docile, leale – si legge nella Presentazione alla professione – Costante buona volontà, grande attaccamento alla vocazione e all’Istituto”.
Seguirono la Propedeutica a Parma (62-63), il Prefettato ad Ancona (63-64) e, ancora a Parma, gli studi teologici (64-68). Un percorso con tratti veramente duri, in particolare quello dovuto alle difficili condizioni economiche in cui venne a trovarsi la famiglia per l’improvvisa morte del papà. “Vocazione molto provata – così nella presentazione al Presbiterato - Siamo contenti di lui e riteniamo possa diventare un missionario prezioso per la causa del Regno di Dio. Notevoli le sue doti di aggancio con i ragazzi: ci sa fare e sa passare dal faceto al serio attirandoli al gioco e portandoli a Dio”. Fu ordinato presbitero a Parma il 15.10.1967.
Dopo l’ordinazione fu impegnato nella formazione e nell’insegnamento ad Alzano Lombardo (68-69) e poi a Salerno (69-72).
Ma P. Nicola desiderava la missione, e nel 1972 fu destinato all’Indonesia. Nel gennaio del ’73 giunse a Padang per lo studio della lingua. Nel ’74 fu assegnato alla zona di Pasaman. Scriveva qualche anno più tardi: “I catecumeni non mancano e con tante iniziative pastorali cerchiamo di fare approfondire la fede ai neofiti.
Il ‘dispensario’ va sempre bene. Speriamo che questo lavoro si rassomigli sempre più a quello di Cristo che guariva per il regno dei cieli.
È pure arrivato il momento delle costruzioni: finora non ne volevo sapere di costruire perché non volevo sacrificare la pastorale, e anche perché non é che me ne intenda tanto. Ma bisogna fare di necessità virtù. I bambini a Kotabaru aumentano e le aule non sono più sufficienti pur facendo scuola mattino e sera, per cui si é arrivati alla conclusione di costruire altre tre aule con una biblioteca”.
Nel 1982 venne trasferito tra i Nias, in diocesi di Medan, suo campo di lavoro fino al 1993. Raccontò le sue esperienze su Missionari Saveriani agosto 1992: “Vissi questi anni indimenticabili all’ombra della bandiera indonesiana; tra ricordi, paure improvvise, nostalgia del paese natio e continui sforzi di «incarnazione» del mio io in un ambiente «cor- tesemente ostile». La mia «italianità» assunse colori nuovi, nuovi orizzonti, nuovi mondi culturali, esotici, al punto che presi la nazionalità indonesiana per il resto della mia vita.
Per i Mentawaiani e i Nias era il momento magico e tragico di gruppi umani che si liberano in maniera più o meno graduale dalle infrastrutture e «pesi» ancestrali, tra una infinità di contrasti e di lotte a tutti i livelli. Era difficile da parte nostra consigliare il meglio, leggere con obiettività i segni dei tempi, perché anche noi eravamo travolti nella piena dei problemi; a volte non c’era il tempo materiale per una valutazione serena delle situazioni con prese di posizione che accontentassero e nello stesso tempo educassero ad un futuro migliore”.
Dopo queste esperienze in campo pastorale, P. Nicola fu chiamato a dare il suo contributo nella formazione. Frequentò un corso di aggiornamento a Manila (86-87). Fu quindi vicerettore nello studentato filosofico a Jakarta e poi incaricato del pre-noviziato, sempre a Jakarta. Dal 1997 al 2000 fu anche Vice Regionale.
Purtroppo incominciarono a manifestarsi problemi di salute e nel 2000 venne in Ita- lia per curarsi. Ripresosi, fu rettore a Taranto, animatore missionario a Gallico e a Maco- mer. Nel 2010 tentò di rendersi ancora utile in Indonesia, ma le forze non lo sostennero. Nell’agosto del 2011 ritornò a Parma.
Il saluto di Trisno Waluyo (è il nome indonesiano di P. Nicola e significa amore totale) potrebbe essere quello dello scritto del 1984: “Ricordiamoci sempre al Signore perché la sua vigna sia lavorata sempre e nel migliore dei modi. I frutti dipendono tutti dalla grazia di Dio, che speriamo poter sempre ricevere e donare a quanti ci incontrano nelle varie situazioni della vita”.

Fr. Nicola Macina died on 13 January 2014, in the Mother House, Parma. Born in Mo- dugno (Bari, Italy), on 21 February 1943, he was almost 71 years old.
He studied at the Seminaries of Bari and Molfetta before joining the Xaverians at Nizza Monferrato (Asti) in 1961 for Novitiate. He made his First Profession on 3 October 1962. The presentation to religious profession thus described him: “He is generous, docile and loyal; he has good will, great attachment to his vocation and the Institute”.
This was followed by an Introductory year in Parma (1962-63), a year as Prefect at Ancona (1963-64) and, once again, at Parma where he studied theology (1964-68). His path to the priesthood was made difficult because of the financial problems in which his family found itself after the sudden death of his father. The report presenting him for the prie- sthood noted: “his vocation has been sorely tried. We are pleased with him and we believe he can become a valuable missionary for the cause of the Kingdom of God. He has a great ability to relate to children, moving from humor to serious topics, getting them involved in games and leading them to God”. He was ordained priest in Parma on 15 October 1967.
After ordination he was assigned to formation and teaching in Alzano Lombardo (1968- 69) and then in Salerno (1969-72).
However Fr. Nicola wanted to go to the missions and, in 1972, he was assigned to Indo- nesia. In January 1973 he arrived in Padang to study the language. In 1974 he was assigned to the area of Pasaman. He wrote some years later: “There is no shortage of catechumens and with so many pastoral initiatives we try to deepen the faith of the neophytes.
The ‘dispensary’ is doing well. We hope that this work will resemble something of what Christ did when he cured the sick for the Kingdom of heaven.
The time has also come to start building: until now I wanted nothing to do with such work because I did not want to neglect the pastoral ministry, and also because I do not exactly know much about it. Yet we must a virtue of necessity. The children at Kotabaru are increasing in number and the classrooms are no longer sufficient, even if we hold school in the morning and in the evening; we have therefore decided to build another three classro- oms with a library”.
In 1982 he was sent among the Nias, in the diocese of Medan, which was his field of work until 1993. He spoke of his experiences to Missionari Saveriani in August 1992: “I lived those unforgettable years in the shadow of the Indonesian flag; among memories, sudden fears, nostalgia for my home country and ongoing efforts to «incarnate» my ego in a context that was «courteously hostile ». My Italian identity took on new colors, new horizons, and new cultural, exotic worlds and I decided to take Indonesian citizenship for the rest of my life.
The Mentawai and Nias peoples experienced the magic and the tragedy of gradually shaking off some ancestral infrastructures and «burdens», between in- finite conflicts and struggles at all levels. It was difficult for us to give the best advice and read the signs of the times objectively because we too were overwhelmed by the problems; sometimes we just didn’t have the time to make a serene assessment of the situation and adopt satisfactory positions that could educate people for a better future”.
After these experiences in the pastoral field, Fr. Nicola was called to give his contribu- tion to formation. He attended an aggiornamento course in Manila (1986-87). He was then vice-rector in the philosophy community of Jakarta and later put in charge of the pre-novitiate in Jakarta. From 1997 until 2000 he was also Vice-Regional.
Unfortunately, the first signs of health problems appeared and he travelled to Italy for treatment in 2000. Upon his recovery, he served as rector at Taranto, and missionary ani- mator at Gallico and Macomer. In 2010 he tried to make himself useful once again in Indo- nesia, but his strength was not up to the task. He returned to Parma in August 2011.
The farewell words from Trisno Waluyo (his Indonesian name, which means total love) could well be the words he wrote in 1984: “Let us remember each other to the Lord that his Vineyard may always be well tended in the best possible way. The fruits depend en- tirely on the grace of God, which we hope to always receive and give to those we encounter on our path through life”.
