P. Giovanni Lazzari

A Cremona, nella Casa di cura "San Camillo", alle 12.50 del 27.1.2010, è morto il P. Giovanni Lazzari, vinto dal tumore che dalla fine del 2003 lo andava inesorabilmente consumando.
Aveva 69 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Cremona il 26.07.1940.
P. Giovanni fu una vocazione adulta; maturata nell'ambiente, vocazionalmente fertile, dell'Azione Cattolica parrocchiale; dono anche della famiglia e della comunità parrocchiale. Nella lettera di presentazione il suo Parroco, confermata «l' informazione sulla serietà delle intenzioni del giovane», aggiungeva: «spero che il Signore dia conforto alla sua famiglia [in una difficile situazione economica, obiettivamente aggravata con l'entrata di P. Giovanni all'Istituto] e compensi la perdita che la parrocchia subisce moltiplicando la generosità negli altri giovani» (Don Franco Voltini, 13.8.59).
Iniziò l'iter formativo saveriano nel 1959 a Nizza Monferrato, allora scuola apostolica per le vocazioni adulte. Qui frequentò due anni di medie (59-61). Passò quindi a Piacenza per il terzo anno di medie (61-62). Ritornò a Nizza Monferrato per il Noviziato (62-63), concluso con la Prima Professione a Parma il 3.10.63. Fu poi a Desio e a Tavernerio (63-66) per il liceo. Infine a Parma per la Teologia (66-70). Fu ordinato presbitero il 12.10.69 a Cremona.
Così fu presentato per l'ammissione alla Professione Perpetua e agli Ordini maggiori: «Temperamento buono, attivo e intraprendente specialmente per quanto si riferisce agli aspetti pratici della vita. Fa sperare bene di sé come missionario nel più autentico senso del termine».
Nel 1970, al termine degli studi teologici, P. Giovanni fu destinato all'Indonesia. Giunse nel grande paese asiatico nel settembre del 1971. Dopo qualche mese di studio della lingua indonesiana fu inviato alle Mentawai, il piccolo arcipelago di isole, splendide paesaggisticamente, ma isolate dal resto del mondo. P. Giovanni fu collaboratore e poi parroco nelle comunità cristiane di Siberut (72-76; 78-80) e Sikakap (77-78;80-87). Furono quindici anni vissuti "in un mondo semplice dove non puoi che sentirti utile a gente il cui intento è quello di sopravvivere alle insidie di una natura selvaggia" (Vita cattolica, 5 gennaio 2005).
Nel 1987 i Superiori gli chiesero di prestare il suo servizio pastorale nell'isola di Sumatra. Fu vice-parroco e poi parroco a Kotabaru nel Pasaman (87-96); e successivamente a Pekambaru, nella parrocchia di Santa Maria (96-99) e in quella, iniziata allora da lui, di S. Paulus (99-02). Anche in queste zone curò la pastorale delle comunità cristiane e operò perché a tutti fosse assicurata l'istruzione scolastica e le cure mediche di base. Trovandosi infine in contesti sociali con contrasti etnico-culturali, si impegnò costantemente per favorire il dialogo e la collaborazione.
Nel 2002 fu destinato alla Procura di Jakarta: «preposto a un servizio di accoglienza e di amministrazione … punto di riferimento di tanti poveri». [Una realtà, quest'ultima, per cui] «avrebbe voluto gridare a tutti: Un mondo migliore si costruisce, prima di tutto, rinunciando personalmente al superfluo e concretizzando in se stessi quello che vorremmo predicare agli altri» (Vita cattolica, 5 gennaio 2005).
Nel 2005 per P. Giovanni ebbe inizio la tappa della vita segnata dalla lotta contro il tumore, ma anche –come rilevato da tutti quelli che lo hanno avvicinato in quei cinque anni di sofferenza– illuminata dal sorriso e dalla serenità con cui egli affrontò la malattia sino alla fine.
Così ha condensato la vita di P. Giovanni, nel messaggio di condoglianze, il Vescovo di Cremona, Dante Lafranconi: «… sento anzitutto il bisogno di rendere grazie a Dio che ha donato padre Giovanni alla nostra Chiesa cremonese e alla Pia Società di S. Francesco Saverio per le missioni estere dove ha dedicato tutte le sue energie fisiche, morali e spirituali per far crescere nella vita evangelica e nella testimonianza missionaria chi a lui si accostava.
Egli è stato davvero un servo umile e fedele del Signore conformandosi sempre meglio al modello di Gesù buon pastore, facendosi tutto a tutti per guadagnare tutti all'amore di Cristo».
Il Signore lo accolga nel suo Paradiso.

Fr. Giovanni Lazzari died on January 27 2010, at the “San Camillo” clinic, Cremona (Italy). He had been ill with cancer since 2003.
Born in Cremona on July 26 1940, he was 69 years old.
Fr. Giovanni was an adult vocation that was born and nurtured in the vocationally fertile terrain of the Azione Cattolica (Catholic Action movement) at parish level; it was encouraged also by his family and parish community. His parish priest thus spoke of him in a letter of presentation: «this young man has serious intentions and I hope that the Lord will console his family (which was in a financially difficult situation that was aggravated when Fr. Giovanni joined the Xaverians) and make up for the loss suffered by the parish community by multiplying the generosity of the other young people» (Fr. Franco Voltini, on Aug. 13, 1959).
He began the Xaverian formation program in 1959 at Nizza Monferrato, which was the seminary for adult vocations at that time. There he attended the first two years of high school (1959-61). He then moved to Piacenza for the third year of high school (1961-62), and returned to Nizza Monferrato for Novitiate (1962-63), which ended with his First Profession at Parma on Oct. 3, 1963. He was sent to Desio and Tavernerio (1963-66) for liceo. Finally, he studied theology at Parma (1966-70) and was ordained priest in Cremona on Oct. 12, 1969.
He was thus presented for admission to Final Profession and Major Orders: «He has a good temperament, he is active and resourceful in the practical aspects of life. He seems to be a promising missionary in the most authentic sense of the word».
In 1970, upon conclusion of his theology studies, Fr. Giovanni was assigned to Indonesia. He arrived there in September 1971. After some months studying the Indonesian language, he was sent to the Mentawai islands, which were very beautiful, but also isolated from the rest of the world. Fr. Giovanni was assistant and then parish priest in the Christian communities of Siberut (1972-76; 1978-80) and Sikakap (1977-78; 1980-87). There were fifteen years lived «in a simple world where you cannot fail to feel that you are useful to the people who are struggling to survive the dangers created by the savagery of nature» (Vita Cattolica, Jan. 5, 2005).
In 1987, the Superiors asked him to work in the pastoral ministry on the island of Sumatra. He was assistant priest and then parish priest at Kotabaru in Pasaman (1987-96); thereafter he served in Pakambaru, in the parish of St. Mary (1996-99) and in the parish that he founded, St. Paulus (1999-2002). In these areas he provided pastoral care for the Christian communities and worked to ensure that everyone had a basic education and medical attention. Since he was working in a social context marked by ethnic and cultural tension, he worked constantly to promote dialogue and collaboration.
In 2002 he was assigned to the Procura of Jakarta: «His task was hospitality and administration… a reference point for many poor people». His service to the latter «made him want to shout to all: a better world is built, first and foremost, by personally renouncing what is superfluous and by concretely practicing what we would like to preach to others» (Vita Cattolica, Jan. 5, 2005).
In 2005, Fr. Giovanni began his struggle with cancer. Everyone who knew him in the five years of his illness has testified to the joyful serenity with which he endured his suffering until the very end.
In his message of condolence, Bishop Dante Lafranconi of Cremona thus summed up the life of Fr. Giovanni: «First of all, I want to thank God for giving Fr. Giovanni to our Church in Cremona and to the Xaverian Congregation for the foreign missions, where he dedicated all his physical, moral and spiritual energies to the growth of the evangelical life and the missionary witness in everyone who approached him.
He was truly a humble and faithful servant of the Lord; he shaped his life according to the model of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, becoming all things to all people in order to win them all over to the love of Christ».
May the Lord welcome him into Paradise.
