All'ospedale dei Fatebenefratelli di Lunsar (Sierra Leone), verso le 15.00 del 16 febbraio 2010, è morto P. Luciano Peterlini. Era stato ricoverato, il 12 febbraio, per l'aggravarsi del parkinsonismo che lo affliggeva da qualche anno.
Aveva 73 anni compiuti essendo nato il 5.7.1936 a Rovereto (Trento).
Quella della vocazione di P. Luciano è la storia di un sogno della fanciullezza che rapidamente acquista concretezza e diventa scelta di vita. P. Peterlini entrò tra i Saveriani a Vicenza il 6 ottobre 1948. Nel 1951 passò alla comunità del ginnasio superiore a Zelarino. Nel marzo dell'anno successivo, rispondendo alle domande dell'esame della vocazione, scrisse: «La molla che mi ha dato il primo impulso è stata la fantasia… Ora posso dire che se resto all'Istituto, se studio, se cerco di convincermi sempre più sulla necessità della posizione nella vita (istruzione e santità) è solo per diventare un vero missionario e dare tutto quello che potrò e che posso alle anime» (8.3.52). Definito così il suo orientamento esistenziale, fece il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli e, dopo un anno più sei mesi – da lui richiesti 'per garantirsi meglio della sua volontà' (P. Maestro, Giudizio riassuntivo) – emise la Prima Professione il 12.3.1955.
Fu quindi a Desio dove frequentò le tre classi del liceo ('55-'58). Prestò il suo servizio di prefetto a Udine e Cremona ('58-'60). Nel settembre del 1960 iniziò la teologia a Parma.
L'anno dopo, però, fu assegnato alla Circoscrizione degli USA. In settembre raggiunse la comunità di Franklin. Completò gli studi teologici presso il St. Francis Seminary di Milwaukee ('61-'64). Fu ordinato presbitero a Milwaukee il 29.9.1963.
Dopo l'ordinazione fu destinato agli studi in vista di un suo servizio come insegnante nel seminario saveriano di Holliston. Frequentò la Marquette University, conseguendo nel 1967 il BA degree in Science. Dal 1967 al 1971 fece parte della comunità di Holliston come Incaricato degli studi e Insegnante. Essendo stato chiuso il Seminario, il padre passò alla casa di Wayne con il compito di animatore vocazionale. Nel 1974 fu destinato alla Sierra Leone. Nella scheda informativa, predisposta per l'occasione dal Provinciale, si legge: «P. Luciano Peterlini è dotato di vari talenti e belle qualità ... Ha grandi abilità nelle cose pratiche … E' capace di ottimi rapporti con i giovani, ed è gentile e generoso con tutti ... Sopra tutto, è un ottimo e generoso sacerdote, a cui piace la predicazione e l'amministrazione dei Sacramenti ... Piuttosto schivo per natura, con le sue maniere gentili, si è conquistato l'affetto di molti amici».
Dal dicembre 1974 al 2010 P. Luciano ha fatto parte della comunità dei Saveriani della Sierra Leone: «ha vissuto una vita di servizio silenzioso senza mai lamentarsi nei vari uffici ai quali era assegnato. Ha imparato bene la lingua creola e comunicava facilmente anche con la gente semplice» (S. E. Mons. Biguzzi). Dal '75 all'87 fu viceparroco a Kambia e insegnante di religione nella Kolenten Secundary School. Dall'87 al '90 fu parroco di Yele. Passato a Makeni, ebbe gli incarichi di Diocesan education Secretary, Principal of Makeni Teachers College e Assistant Priest.
Dal 98 al 2003 fu Amministratore diocesano. Infine, dopo la comparsa della malattia, collaboratore pastorale a Kabala e, dal 2007, a Lungi.
Hanno scritto di lui: «P. Luciano era un uomo di carità. I tanti che si rivolgevano a lui per aiuto ricevevano sempre qualcosa» (S. E. Mons. Biguzzi). «… Rivedo una fila di pazienti davanti alla porta della missione di Kambia: sono le 4 del pomeriggio e lui incomincia il suo lavoro di infermiere, dopo le sei ore di scuola...» (P. Lizzit). «… Ricordo due atteggiamenti particolari della sua carità: la sua premura per i ciechi e la sua carità per i poveri"» (Mons. Kamara). «P. Luciano è stato un bravo maestro, un missionario zelante, un buon confratello» (P. Maloney).

Fr. Luciano Peterlini died at the Fatebenefratelli hospital in Lunsar (Sierra Leone), on Feb. 16 2010. He had been admitted to the hospital with complications of the Parkinsonism he had been suffering for some years.
Born on July 5, 1936 at Rovereto (Trento), he was 73 years old.
Fr. Luciano’s vocation is the story of a childhood dream that rapidly became a specific life option. He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on Oct. 6 1948. In 1951, he moved to the community of Zelarino for senior high school. In March of the following year, in response to questions examining his vocation, he wrote: «My imagination gave me the initial impulse… Now I can say that if I remain in the Congregation, study and strive to convince myself more and more of the necessity of instruction and holiness, it is only in view of becoming a true missionary and giving everything I can to souls» (March 8, 1952). Having thus defined his existential orientation, he did his Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli and, after one year and an extra six months – which he had asked for “in order to have a better guarantee of his will” (from the final report of the Novice Master) – he made his First Profession on March 12 1955.
He was then sent to Desio where he attended the three years of liceo (1955-58). He served as prefect at Udine and Cremona (1958-60). In September of 1960 he began theology in Parma.
The following year, he was assigned to the Province of the United States of America and arrived in the Franklin community in Sept. 1961. He completed the theological studies at St. Francis Seminary of Milwaukee (1961-64) and was ordained priest in Milwaukee on Sept. 29, 1963.
After his ordination, Fr. Luciano was assigned to further studies in view of service as a professor in the Xaverian seminary of Holliston, MA. He attended Marquette University and obtained the BA degree in Science. From 1967 until 1971, he was a member of the Holliston community as a Professor and Prefect of studies. When the seminary was closed in 1971, he moved to the community of Wayne, NJ, to work as a vocation animator. In 1974 he was assigned to Sierra Leone. He was accompanied by the praise of the Provincial, who wrote: «Fr. Luciano Peterlini possesses various talents and good qualities… He is very skilful in practical matters… he is capable of excellent relationships with young people and is kind and generous to all… Above all, he is an excellent and generous priest, who loves preaching and celebrating the sacraments… He is rather shy by nature and his kindness has won him the affection of many friends».
Fr. December 1974 until 2010, Fr. Luciano was a member of the Xaverian community of Sierra Leone: «He lived a life of silent service, in the various tasks assigned to him, without ever complaining. He learned the Krio language well and communicated easily also with the simple people» (Bishop Biguzzi). From 1975 until 1987, he was assistant priest at Kambia and taught religion in the Kolenten Secondary School. From 1987 until 1990, he served as parish priest of Yele. He then moved to Makeni, where he was appointed Diocesan Education Secretary, Principal of Makeni Teachers College and assistant Priest.
From 1998 until 2003, he served as Diocesan Treasurer. Finally, after the appearance of his illness, he helped in pastoral ministry at Kabala, and from 2007, at Lungi.
«Fr. Luciano was a man of charity. The many people that turned to him for help always received something» (Bishop Biguzzi). «…I recall a long line of patients in front of the door of the mission of Kambia: it was four o’clock in the afternoon, and he was beginning his work as a nurse, after six hours of school…» (Fr. Lizzit). «…I recall two particular attitudes of his charity: his concern for the blind and his charity towards the poor» (Msgr. Kamara). «Fr. Luciano was a good teacher, a zealous missionary, and a good confrere» (Fr. Maloney).
