Intorno alle 10,30 del 19 giugno 2003, nell’orto della Casa di Vicenza, è stato trovato privo di vita Fr. Antonio Perin. Il medico, prontamente chiamato, ne ha constato la morte avvenuta per arresto cardiocircolatorio.
Era prossimo ai settantasette anni essendo nato a Santa Maria di Camisano (VI) il 22 giugno 1926.
Per Fr. Perin non fu facile realizzare la sua vocazione: “A undici anni avevo voglia di farmi prete. Ma circostanze familiari me lo impedirono. Volevo recarmi nell’Istituto di don Orione. Intanto dovetti lavorare: facevo il bracciante agricolo… Erano sacrifici notevoli di cui però non mi pento. Il sacrificio tempra l’anima e fa comprendere tante cose” (La voce dei Berici, 5 ottobre 1969). Successivamente conobbe il P. Noaro e maturò la decisione di farsi saveriano, ma non poté entrare all’Istituto a causa della mamma, vedova dal 1944 e quindi sola a mandare avanti la famiglia. L’attesa durò fino al 7 agosto 1949 quando Fr. Perin, letteralmente, fuggì da casa ed entrò tra i Saveriani di Vicenza. Aveva perseverato, ricordò nell’intervista alla Voce dei Berici del 69, perché sostenuto dagli amici del gruppo giovanile di Azione Cattolica della parrocchia, che si distingueva anche per una intensa vita sacramentale.
Fr. Perin percorse il curriculum formativo allora vigente per i Fratelli: dopo qualche mese trascorso a Vicenza, passò a Parma per il probandato e l’11 ottobre dello stesso anno iniziò il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli, così presentato dal suo Formatore: “Di giudizio maturo, sincero, amante del lavoro e non teme la fatica. Dotato di molto spirito di sacrificio. Carattere socievole. Buona pietà. Caritatevole verso i compagni” (Presentazione al Noviziato, 1950).
Fatta la Prima Professione il 12.10.1951, Fr. Perin rimase nella casa del Noviziato come addetto all’azienda agricola. Con lo stesso incarico, o come ortolano e giardiniere, prestò poi il suo prezioso e apprezzato servizio a Parma (57-59), Zelarino (59-62), Montecatini (62-64), Tavernerio (64-69).
Già nel 1959 aveva presentato domanda di andare in missione. Aveva ripetuto la richiesta nel 1963: “Dopo aver parlato con Mons. Gazza della nostra missione del Brasile, mi sono sentito nel cuore un grande desiderio di partire anch’io con lui”. Nel 1969 fu mandato nella comunità di Cardross (GB) per lavorare e imparare l’Inglese e, due anni dopo, il 29 settembre del 71, poté partire per la Sierra Leone.
Esclusi alcuni periodi, anche prolungati, di cura in Casa Madre, Fr. Perin lavorò in Sierra Leone dal ‘71 al ‘94: alla Casa Regionale di Makeni (71-78 e 79-84), a Yele (84-88) a Binkolo (89-94). Sempre con l’incarico di addetto alla casa.
Così lo ricorda Mons. Biguzzi in un messaggio del 23.6.03: “Fr. Antonio era accogliente e si preoccupava che non mancasse mai niente in casa regionale…Godeva che ci si divertisse durante i raduni comunitari e si prestava a ripetere le sue storielle in veneto con qualche parola di creolo e di inglese… Aiutava volentieri i ragazzi che lo assistevano nei lavori attorno alla casa e coi quali conversava serenamente in veneto. Questi ragazzi sono cresciuti e ora lo ricordano con riconoscenza…
La gioia di essere missionario nell'umile servizio agli altri è stata la caratteristica di Fr. Perin”.
Nel 1995 fu destinato all’Italia perché la salute non gli consentiva più la vita di missione. Fece parte della comunità del Noviziato di Ancona, e ultimamente di quella di Vicenza: sempre con il compito di addetto alla casa e sempre impegnato a trovare aiuti per i suoi ragazzi della Sierra Leone.

On June 19 2003, at about 10.30 am, Br. Antonio Perin was found dead in the garden of the Vicenza House. The certificate issued by a doctor, who was called quickly to the scene, records his death as a result of cardiac arrest.
Born in Santa Maria di Camisano, on June 22 1926, Br. Antonio died three days short of his 77th birthday.
It was no easy task for Br. Perin to fulfill his vocation: "When I was 11 years old, I wanted to be a priest, but family circumstances prevented me. I wanted to join the Institute of don Orione. In the meantime, I had to work as a farm laborer... I had to make considerable sacrifices but I don’t regret any of them. Sacrifice toughens the spirit and makes us understand many things" ("La Voce dei Berici", Oct. 5 1969). Later, he met Fr. Noaro and he decided to join the Xaverians, but he was unable to join the Congregation on account of the fact that his mother, who was widowed in 1944, was left alone to look after the family. He had to wait until Aug. 7 1949, when he literally ran away from home and joined the Xaverians in Vicenza. In an interview given to the "Voce dei Berici" in 1969, he recalls how his perseverance owed a lot to the support given him by his friends of the "Azione Cattolica” (Catholic Action) parish youth group, which also distinguished itself by its intense sacramental life.
Br. Perin completed the formation curriculum of the brothers at the time: after a few months in Vicenza, he moved to Parma for "probandato" (today's Postulancy) and, on Oct. 11 of the same year, he began Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli. His formator thus described him: "He is a man of mature and sound judgment, sincere, loves work and is not afraid of exertion. He possesses a great spirit of sacrifice. He is sociable, has a good degree of piety and is charitable towards his companions" (Presentation to Novitiate, 1950).
After his First Profession (Oct. 12, 1951), Br. Perin remained in the Novitiate House where he worked as a farmhand assistant. He did the same job, in addition to that of gardener, in Parma (1957-59), Zelarino (1959-62), Montecatini (1962-64) and Tavernerio (1964-69). His precious labor was always much appreciated.
In 1959, he expressed his desire to go to the missions. In 1963, he did so once again: "After speaking with Bishop Gazza about our mission in Brazil, I felt within my heart a great desire to leave with him.” In 1969, he was sent to the community of Cardross (GB) to work and learn the English language; two years later, on Sept. 29 1971, he left for Sierra Leone. With the exception of some periods, some of them long, for treatment at the Mother House, Br. Perin worked in Sierra Leone from 1971 until 1994: in the Regional House of Makeni (1971-78 and 1979-84), at Yele (1984-88), and Binkolo (1989-94). His tasks always involved working around the house.
Bishop Biguzzi thus remembers him in a message dated June 23, 1903: "Br. Antonio was a hospitable man and made sure that there was never anything lacking in the Regional House ... He was happy to see us enjoying ourselves during community meetings and he willingly told stories in the veneto dialect, mixing them with some words in Krio and English ... He willingly helped the boys who assisted him in jobs around the house and he used to chat happily with them in veneto. These boys have since grown up and remember him with gratitude... The characteristic virtue of Br. Perin was the joy of being a missionary in the humble service of others".
In 1995, he was assigned to Italy because his health was unable to withstand the rigors of life in the missions. He spent a period in the Novitiate community of Ancona and then moved to Vicenza. He spent his time looking after the house and looking for help for the children of his mission in Sierra Leone.
