P. Giuseppe Toscano

In Casa Madre, alle 12.05 del 6.7.2003, è morto per cause naturali il P. Giuseppe Toscano. Era in cura a Parma dal 1988 e da alcuni giorni era afflitto da broncopolmonite.
Aveva novantun anni compiuti essendo nato a Parma il 19.09.1911.
Battezzato nel Battistero di Parma, cresimato dal Beato Conforti, P. Toscano nel 1924, finito il terzo anno di Istituto Tecnico, entrò tra i Saveriani nell’Istituto di Vicenza, dove frequentò le ultime due classi di Ginnasio. Ritornò quindi a Parma in viale S. Martino per il Noviziato (26-27), il Liceo (27-30) e la Teologia (30-34). Fu ordinato Presbitero il 29.10.1933.
Così lo presentava per l’ordinazione il P. Magnani (22.8.33): “Entusiasmabile facilmente… non ha salute robusta… ingegno eccellente… si presta volentieri per aiutare i confratelli… fedele e diligente nelle pratiche di pietà”.
Uscito dalla teologia, fu per due anni (34-36) confessore a S. Pietro in Vincoli. Nel 1936 fu chiamato a Parma per insegnare Italiano, Latino e Greco ai Liceisti saveriani. Nel 1938, superato brillantemente l’esame di licenza, si iscrisse alla Cattolica di Milano dove, nel 1942, si laureò in Filosofia.
Sul finire del 1939 ricomparve la pleurite che lo aveva afflitto nell’ultimo anno di teologia: il P. Toscano dovette risiedere fuori comunità, a Motta di Madesimo (SO) (40-42) e poi a S. Matteo sull’Appennino parmense (43-45). Si trattò di una esperienza non facile, per evidenti problemi di comunicazione; ne rimase segnato soprattutto il suo relazionarsi con i confratelli e i Superiori. Qualche anno dopo scriveva al riguardo: “… è tanto difficile capirci (Lett. 16.2.47); … il non poterci comprendere è uno dei castighi del peccato originale e la sua accettazione fa parte dell’umiltà, o meglio, rassegnazione cristiana” (Lett. 18.3.47).
Nel 1946 venne inviato in Cina, ma dopo due anni di studio della lingua, insieme agli altri confratelli, fu costretto a lasciare quella missione. Alla fine del 1948 era ad Hong Kong. Qui si iscrisse a medicina, “per utilizzare gli anni di questa guerra che sembra imminente, nella miglior preparazione per il dopo-guerra, cioè con una laurea che mi permetterà di organizzare i dispensari…” (Lett. 2.12.48). A Hong Kong riuscì pure a pubblicare La storia della prima missione cattolica in Tibet.
Rientrato in Italia nel 1951, conseguì la laurea in medicina a Parma (1954) e la specializzazione in Dermatologia a Napoli (1956). A quel punto il P. Toscano era pronto per ripartire, purtroppo una grave forma di pericardite non gli consentì di ritornare in missione. Venne fatto assistente dell’Associazione in Omnibus Christus e Direttore del Museo, incarico che tenne fino al 1988.
In pratica da quel momento la sua vita risultò sempre più scandita dagli interessi che furono la sua vera passione: il Tibet, l’arte, la medicina, la Liturgia e le manifestazioni di devozione mariana (ambiti nei quali pubblicò diversi lavori che non possono trovare spazio in queste note biografiche). Per due lunghi periodi, e sempre con i dovuti permessi, visse fuori comunità, a Varese (68-78) per studiare scientificamente il medicamento usato nella casa di cura di Posillipo e ad Ostia e dintorni (78-88) per avvalersi della collaborazione di un monaco tibetano nella traduzione delle opere dell’eminente tibetologo, il gesuita P. Desideri (1684-1733).
Dal 1988 il P. Toscano era in cura a Parma, lentamente ma inesorabilmente minato dal diabete e dall’Alzheimer.
Certo gli interessi di P. Toscano gravitarono, prevalentemente, al di fuori delle attività programmate dalla Congregazione. Con difficoltà più o meno accentuate, e forse inevitabili, nelle relazioni con la comunità saveriana. Glielo ricordava il Superiore al quale il P. Toscano aveva scritto: “Dio solo sa i sacrifici che faccio, e che faccio volentieri, perché la causa della Chiesa l’esige” (Lett. 4.2.83).

Fr. Giuseppe Toscano died of natural causes in the Mother House, at 12.05 pm, on July 6 2003. He had been in nursing care in Parma since 1988. A few days before his death, he contracted bronchial pneumonia.
Born in Parma on September 19 1909, he was 91 years old.
He was baptized in the Parma Baptistery and confirmed by the Blessed Conforti. In 1924, Fr. Toscano joined the Xaverians in Vicenza. He later moved back to Parma for Novitiate in Viale S. Martino (1926-27) where he professed Religious Vows on Sept. 21 1927, High School (1927-30) and Theology (1930-34). He was ordained priest on Oct. 29 1933. In presenting him for ordination, Fr. Magnani wrote (Aug. 22 1933): "his enthusiasm is easily aroused ... he does not enjoy robust health ... he possesses an excellent mind ... he willingly helps his confreres ... he is faithful and diligent in his devotions".
After Theology, he was confessor for two years (1934-36) at S. Pietro in Vincoli. In 1936 he was sent to Parma to teach Italian, Latin and Greek to the Xaverian students. In 1938, having brilliantly passed his diploma exam, he enrolled in the University "Cattolica di Milano", where he graduated in Philosophy in 1942. Towards the end of 1939, the pleurisy that had afflicted him in the last year of Theology appeared again: Fr. Toscano had to live away from the community, at Motta di Madesimo (Sondrio, 1940-42) and at S. Matteo (Parma's Apennine region, 1943-45). It was not an easy experience for him, due to the obvious problems of communication; his relationship with the confreres and the Superiors suffered as a result. Some years later, he wrote about it: "... it is so difficult for us to understand each other (Letter of Feb. 16 1947); ... the inability to understand each other is one of the punishments of original sin and its acceptance is an exercise in humility or, even more, Christian resignation” (Letter of March 18 1947).
In 1946 he was sent to China; however, after two years language study, he was forced to leave that mission together with the other confreres. At the end of 1948 he was in Hong Kong, where he enrolled in Medicine, "to prepare for the aftermath of what appeared to be an imminent war, with a degree that would enable me to organize the dispensaries..." (Letter of Dec. 2 1948). During his time in Hong Kong, he also published the history of the first Catholic mission in Tibet.
He returned to Italy in 1951, where he obtained a degree in medicine in Parma (1954) and a specialization in Dermatology in Naples (1956). Fr. Toscano was now ready to leave once again for the missions but, unfortunately, a serious form of pericarditis prevented him from doing so. He was appointed assistant of the Association "in Omnibus Christus" and Director of the Museum, a job he kept until 1988.
From that moment onwards, his life was practically marked by the interests that were his real passion: Tibet, art, medicine, Liturgy and Marian devotions (an area in which he published various works which the limited space of this profile prevents us from mentioning here). For two long periods, and always with the necessary authorization, he lived outside the community: at Varese (1968-78), where he engaged in a scientific study of the medication used in the clinic at Posillipo; at Ostia and surrounding areas (1978-88), where he was helped by a Tibetan monk in the translation of the works of Fr. Desideri (1684-1733), a Jesuit who distinguished himself in Tibetan studies.
From 1988 onwards, Fr. Toscano was in nursing care in Parma. His health was unrelentingly undermined by diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. The interests of Fr. Toscano were undoubtedly focused outside the activities of the Congregation. This inevitably caused some friction and tension in his relationships with the Xaverian community. The Superior pointed this out to him and, in his reply, Fr. Toscano wrote: "God alone knows the sacrifices I make, and I do so willingly because the cause of the Church so demands" (Letter, 4.2.83).
