Nato a Sesto S. Giovanni (MI) il 15.VIII.l902 era entrato all’Istituto di Parma a 13 anni, primo dell’Archidiocesi Milanese a far parte della Famiglia di Mons. Conforti. Distinguendosi per le sue doti di mente e di cuore, fu tra i Confratelli che per primi compirono l’anno di Noviziato nell’Istituto e ricevettero una regolare formazione sia dall’allora Maestro dei Novizi, P. Bonardi, sia dallo stesso Fondatore: ciò giovò enormemente a fare del futuro P. Ghezzi una delle figure più tipiche tra i primi Saveriani.
Ordinato Sacerdote da Mons. Conforti nel febbraio 1927, venne inviato nella Scuola Apostolica di Poggio S. Marcello quale Vicerettore ed Insegnante, accanto al P.Amatore Dagnino, con il quale stringerà profonda amicizia nutrita da vicendevole confidenza ed incoraggiamento.
A 28 anni partì per la Cina dove svolse per ben 16 anni un fruttuoso ministero apostolico nei Distretti di Juchow, Hsiang-hsien, Pe-chow, Lo-ho, Hsuchang. Mons. Calza lo teneva in gran conto ed ammirava in lui la dote del governo, del consiglio e della riservatezza.
Più volte assistè ad assalti dei briganti:
"Stanotte all’improvviso un furioso allarme mi fa alzare da letto e correre vestito così alla meglio fino al Borgo della Rossa con il SS.mo Sacramento sotto il braccio, sotto la sferza di un vento impetuoso e gelido. A pochi ly di distanza s’innalzano fuochi spaventosi che fanno un colore sanguigno al cielo tenebroso. Data la veemenza del vento non si odono i colpi di fucile, ma tutto sembra un pandemonio: gente che fugge, che grida, che piange, il vento che urla furioso, tutti sono avviati verso il piccolo borgo alla ricerca di un riparo dalle vessazioni dei briganti..."
Durante il secondo conflitto mondiale soffrì il campo di concentramento e la morte del P. Botton, suo compagno di apostolato, di facezie e di osservazioni geniali.
Rientrato in Italia nel 1946, partecipò al Capitolo Generale nel quale venne eletto Consultore Generale. Contemporaneamente venne nominato Maestro dei Novizi nella Casa di S. Pietro in Vincoli: ben 324 Confratelli furono suoi Novizi. Fu certamente questo il periodo in cui la sua lunga preparazione, vissuta accanto al Fondatore, nella Scuola, nella vita missionaria diretta, venne a maturazione e portò i suoi migliori frutti. Egli poté trasmettere il meglio di sé in particolare il suo giudizio illuminato e desideroso di cogliere gli aspetti positivi, il sacro rispetto della libertà e dei diritti degli altri e la sua riservatezza.
Dal 1956 al 1961 fu Rettore della Casa Saveriana di Udine e quindi Direttore Spirituale della Teologia a Parma.
Già da tempo accusava gravi disturbi fisici dovuti alla colopatia cronica di cui era colpito: successive pleuriti, bronchiti e nausea al cibo trasformarono gli ultimi anni della sua vita in un vero calvario portandolo talvolta ad invocare il Signore affinché lo liberasse.
Morì a Parma, nella Clinica delle Piccole Figlie il mattino del 6.III.l967.

Fr. Mario Ghezzi died of pleurisies from chronic colopathy (colitis) at the Clinic “Piccole Figlie” in Parma on March 6 1967. He was 64 years old, born on Aug. 15 1902 at Sesto S. Giovanni (Milan).
He was the first from the Archdiocese of Milan to enter the family of Conforti. He was 13 when he came to Parma, and excelled in intelligence and heart. He joined the first regular Novitiate in the Xaverian congregation on Sept. 16 1920, and professed religious missionary vows on Sept. 17 1921. Both Fr. Bonardi, as Master of Novices, and Mons. Conforti, as the Founder, took great care in forming this Novitiate class through their talks, as they were recorded by the stenography of Fr. Chiarel. This period influenced in a positive way Fr. Ghezzi and his classmates, thus making him one of the most characteristic figures of the first early Xaverians. Bishop Conforti ordained him priest on Feb. 24 1927, and was soon sent to the Apostolic School at Poggio S. Marcello as vice-rector and professor. During these years of service, he developed a strong relationship with Fr. Amatore Dagnino, rooted on encouragement and mutual affection.
On Oct. 7 1930, at age 28, Fr. Ghezzi departed for China, where he served for 16 continuous years in the Districts of Juchow, Hsiang-hsien, Pe-chow, Lo-ho, Hsuchang. Bishop Calza admired his pastoral qualities as well as his ability to govern, to counsel, and to keep things to himself. More than a time, Fr. Ghezzi had to deal with the insurgence of the Brigands, as he wrote in this letter: “I woke up in the middle of the night by a furious siren, and I run as fast as I could towards the Red Neighborhood, a safe area for all to gather. I was not dressed properly, I felt the cold and gusting wind in my body, as I run with the Blessed Sacrament in my arms. A few yards away, there were huge fires of purple color in that chilly night. Because of the direction and vehemence of the wind, I could not hear the gunshots, but everything around me was pandemic confusion indeed: people escaping and running around, shouts and cries, a gusty chilly wind… everyone seeking shelter in the small neighborhood, from the fury of the brigands.”
During the War, he suffered the experience of the Concentration Camp, and mourned the death of Fr. John Botton, who was together with him in ministry and joined him in some genial adventures and observations.
Back in Italy in 1946, Fr. Ghezzi took part at the General Chapter where he was elected General Councilor. At the same time, he is Master of Novices at S. Pietro in Vincoli. This period of 10 years was certainly the most fruitful of his life, being master of novices to some 324 Xaverians. His knowledge of the congregations, his life lived close to the Founder, the insights and monthly retreats of the Founder during his novitiate, his schooling and missionary life, … became the base for his matured witness and teaching for the Novices. He could show the best of himself through his enlightened mind and his talent to see the positive characteristics of each student, his respect for personal choices, rights, and freedom, and his ability to keep to himself whatever was shared by the novices.
Fr. Ghezzi also served as the Rector of the House in Udine from 1956 to 1961, and was then Spiritual Director of the Theology in Parma.
He suffered for a long time of chronic colopathy, thus debilitating his physic strength with pleurisies, bronchitis and food nausea, which was a true calvary of endurance the last few years of his life. He died at the Clinic of “Piccole Figlie” at Parma in the morning of March 6 1967. May he rest in Peace.
