"Vivace" animatore e missionario in Cina, di anni 58. Sepolto a Parma
Morì improvvisamente il 23.XI.1971, in Casa Madre a Parma, verso le ore 13. Due giorni dopo, ai funerali, l'allora Superiore Generale, Mons. Giovanni Gazza, così lo commemorava:
"... Abbiamo davanti il quadro della sua vita. Nato a Ca de' Stefani di Vescovato (CR) il 15.II.1913, compie gli studi ginnasiali nel Seminario Diocesano. A 18 anni entra nell'Istituto delle Missioni, pochi mesi prima della morte del Fondatore, e nel 1939, a 26 anni, diventa Sacerdote. Sono gli anni della guerra. P. Mario ha subito l'occasione di esercitare, in questa difficile situazione - prima all'interno dell'Istituto come Economo e poi come Assistente dei rifugiati mentre era internato in Svizzera - quell'altruismo coraggioso, che ha sempre caratterizzato la sua Vita. La Casa Apostolica di Cremona deve alla sua dedizione il suo impianto ed i suoi primi passi nei difficilissimi tempi del dopoguerra.
Finalmente nel 1946 la partenza tanto sospirata per la Cina. Sette anni di Missione cinese, vissuta sotto l'incalzare dell'avvento maoista al potere. Egli è sempre ottimista. Si dedica fino all'esaurimento all'assistenza medica di coloro che ne hanno bisogno. Poi, nel 1953, l'arresto da parte dei comunisti cinesi e, finalmente, il suo rientro in Italia, dove si prodiga nelle diverse mansioni di servizio fraterno all'interno dell'Istituto. Da allora, fino a data recente, la sua insistenza per ritornare in Missione. Quando i Saveriani decisero di entrare a Formosa (1966-68), intravide la possibilità di riprendere il suo posto di lavoro apostolico fra i cinesi e le sue richieste divennero insistenti. Si arrese solo di fronte all'evidenza delle sue malferme condizioni di salute. Cominciò allora, nel 1966, ad impegnarsi senza riserve, nel Movimento "Mani Tese". Il suo contatto con i giovani ed i grandi impegni della giustizia nel mondo, dalla lotta contro la fame, l'ignoranza, le malattie, a favore dei Paesi bisognosi e in via di sviluppo sono stati un modo di vivere la sua fede, la sua donazione agli altri, la sua vocazione missionaria. Quante cose si potrebbero cogliere dentro la cornice di questa vita generosa e donata senza riserve! La genuina schiettezza dei suoi rapporti umani, il suo ottimismo, la sua allegria sono sempre stati accettati anche nelle forme qualche volta sbarazzine, perché manifestazione genuina di uno spirito trasparente ed evangelico...".

Fr. Mario Sguazzi died at the Mother House in Parma on Nov. 23 1971, for cardiac arrest, at about 1pm. He was 58 years old, born at Cà de’ Stefani di Vescovato (Cremona) on Feb. 15 1913.
Following studies of Ginnasio at the diocesan Seminary in Cremona, he entered the Xaverian congregation at Parma on July 20 1931, where he began his novitiate. He professed religious vows on Aug. 28 1932 and was ordained priest on May 18, 1939.
Msgr. Giovanni Gazza, Superior General of the Xaverians, described the personality of Fr. Mario in the following eulogy: “…We have in front of us the picture of his life. Born at Cà de’ Stefani di Vescovato (Cremona) on Feb. 15 1913, he first studied at the diocesan Seminary.
He entered the Xaverian Missionaries at Parma when he was 18 years old, just a few months before the death of the Founder, and in 1939 becomes a priest at age 26. Those were the years of the War. In this difficult circumstances, he practices his courageous self-giving and reaching out to others in need, something that characterized all his life. First he was Treasurer of the community, and then became assistant to the refugees while in Swissland.
He followed the founding and the project of the house in Cremona soon after the Second World War.
Finally, in 1946, he receives his assignment to depart for China. He served seven years there, amidst difficult times because of the advent of the Maoist regime and the communist government. But he is ever optimist, even in those tragic situations of house arrest and imprisonment. He works to the point of exhaustion in the medical field, providing for those in need. Then, in 1953, he is imprisoned by the communists, and finally expelled. His return to Italy provides him another opportunity to keep busy in many things in the Congregation.
When the Xaverians decided to enter Formosa (1966-68), he saw the chance to be back in direct apostolic work among the Chinese, and his requests were insistent. Yet, Fr. Mario did not persist further, because his poor health would have been a major problem.
This gave him the opportunity to focus his attention in the Movement “Mani Tese” from 1966 onward. He kept in contact with the youth and brought to them the great commitments of justice in the world, of fight against hunger, ignorance, illnesses, favoring ever those in need, and developing countries. It was his way to live his faith fully, his self-giving for others, his missionary vocation.
These, and many other things, could be part of this picture of his generous life, given to others without reservations! His genuine character in human relationships, his optimism and his joyful mood were ever accepted by others, even when he would push the edge in some remarks, because they manifested his transparent, genuine and Gospel-like spirit.”
