Carissimo,

“E’ cresciuta la coscienza dell’identità e della missione del laico nella Chiesa” (EG n. 102). In sintonia con queste parole di Papa Francesco, il XVII Capitolo Generale ha riflettuto su questo tema per sensibilizzare di più i confratelli sulla realtà del mondo dei laici e per coinvolgere questi nel carisma missionario della nostra Congregazione. Frutto di questa riflessione è il documento intitolato “L’“audace progetto” in comunione con i Laici saveriani”. Dopo la premessa (XVIICG 63-66), questo documento mette in evidenza i fondamenti del Laicato saveriano: famiglia di missionari laici, partecipazione al carisma saveriano, partenza in missione, propria autonomia e collaborazione con i Saveriani. Nella conclusione affida alla Direzione Generale alcuni orientamenti per il sessennio (XVIICG 67-72).

Inoltre, nella promozione del Laicato saveriano, bisogna tenere sempre presente il n. 66 del XVII Capitolo Generale che suddivide i laici in due categorie:

a. collaboratori, associati, volontari e amici, GAMS, ex alunni saveriani;
b. Laici saveriani.

Queste due categorie non sono in alternativa, ma rappresentano due modi di partecipazione al carisma saveriano. Bisogna dunque accompagnare ciascun gruppo secondo la sua natura. Tuttavia, alla luce dell’orientamento capitolare, noi dobbiamo mettere l’enfasi sulla seconda categoria, ispirati dal tema biblico della vocazione. Infatti la decisione di appartenere al Laicato saveriano deve essere la conseguenza di una esperienza vocazionale fondante: Dio chiama gratuitamente una persona ed ella risponde generosamente a questa chiamata. È precisamente questa categoria di laici a costituire l’oggetto di questa lettera.

In sintonia con questi orientamenti, la Direzione Generale ha nominato il p. Javier Peguero Pérez coordinatore del lavoro che la Congregazione fa nel mondo dei laici (XVIICG 72B) e ha costituito l’equipe per il Laicato saveriano (XVIICG 72C), integrata per il momento da due saveriani (p. R. Giannattasio e p. G. Signori) e tre membri del Laicato saveriano d’Italia (Simone Breccia, Beatrice Petrocchi e Franca Rivolta). Questa equipe si è radunata per la prima volta il 10 dicembre 2017.

Dopo aver riflettuto sugli orientamenti del XVII Capitolo Generale e tenendo conto del lavoro svolto dall’equipe per il Laicato saveriano, la Direzione Generale vi propone il seguente percorso:

1.- A livello di Circoscrizioni chiediamo ai Superiori Regionali o di Delegazione di nominare un confratello come referente del Laicato saveriano e come animatore delle comunità saveriane, allo scopo di rafforzare la comunione vicendevole (XVIICG 72A). Inoltre, per favorire una conoscenza reciproca più approfondita, i Superiori favoriscano, nel programma della Circoscrizione, periodi di convivenza tra Saveriani e Laici saveriani (XVII 72E).

2.- A livello di Congregazione ed in linea con quanto dice il documento capitolare, il primo compito dell’equipe per il Laicato saveriano è quello di “raccogliere le esperienze significative di collaborazione tra Saveriani e Laicato saveriano nelle nostre Circoscrizioni”. Dopo questa raccolta di esperienze sarà possibile in seguito elaborare un piano di lavoro per “aiutare i gruppi del Laicato ad interagire tra di loro” (XVIICG 72C). La raccolta delle esperienze costituisce dunque il punto di partenza. Per questo motivo, la Direzione Generale chiede ai Superiori di Circoscrizione di affidare al confratello nominato come referente del Laicato saveriano il compito di elaborare una relazione in base alle seguenti domande:

a) Al momento attuale, quanti gruppi di Laici saveriani esistono nella tua Circoscrizione? Dove o in quale città si trovano? Quante persone integrano i vari gruppi? Chi sono i responsabili dei gruppi?

b) Sinteticamente, come potresti descrivere la storia del Laicato saveriano nella tua Circoscrizione dagli inizi fino al momento attuale? Come potresti delineare le tappe della sua crescita?

c) Che impegni o servizi svolgono questi gruppi di Laici saveriani in rapporto ai Saveriani o alla Chiesa locale? I Laici saveriani della tua Circoscrizione interagiscono con altri Laici saveriani di altre Circoscrizioni? Se la risposta è affermativa, potresti spiegare quale tipo di interazione?

d) Alla luce del XVIICG 66, che suddivide i laici in due categorie come spiegato precedentemente, come potresti definire il Laicato saveriano della tua Circoscrizione? C’è in atto una trasformazione o evoluzione passando dalla categoria “a” alla categoria “b”? Se è così, allora come potresti descrivere questo cambiamento?

e) Il Laicato saveriano della tua Circoscrizione, che grado di strutturazione ha raggiunto a livello di carisma, governo, attività, promozione, amministrazione e gestione economica? Come potresti descrivere, in modo sintetico, il grado di strutturazione in questi ambiti? Se ci sono dei documenti scritti a questo riguardo, potresti, per cortesia, inviarli al sottoscritto via E-mail?

f) Circa la formazione dei laici, esiste un progetto formativo ed esso ha un’impronta saveriana? Inoltre i gruppi di Laici saveriani, al momento attuale, che grado di conoscenza hanno dei documenti della Congregazione (Costituzioni, Lettera Testamento, biografia di Conforti e di san Francesco Saverio)?

g) In rapporto al futuro, come si prospetta il Laicato saveriano della tua Circoscrizione a breve e a media scadenza?

h) Nel caso in cui non ci sia ancora il Laicato saveriano nella tua Circoscrizione, potresti spiegare perché non c’è ancora? Ma soprattutto, davanti al futuro, che cosa pensi di fare affinché un giorno possa nascere?

3.- Nel rispondere alle domande, vi chiediamo che la relazione non superi il numero di quattro cartelle e giunga al sottoscritto entro e non oltre il 30 giugno 2018 (peguero@saveriani.org). Nella relazione indicate anche il nome del confratello nominato come referente del Laicato saveriano della vostra Circoscrizione. L’equipe per il Laicato saveriano studierà questo materiale man mano che arriva. Poi, in un incontro previsto per 1 settembre 2018, si radunerà per elaborare un piano di lavoro per il sessennio da sottoporre posteriormente alla Direzione Generale. Gli altri argomenti – il cosiddetto Vademecum (XVIICG 72D) e la presenza missionaria con comunità miste (XVIICG 72F) – saranno oggetto di riflessione nei prossimi incontri. Strada facendo e, con il contributo di tutti, si daranno i passi necessari per concretizzare queste iniziative indicate dal XVII Capitolo Generale.

Re: Xaverian Lay Missionaries: experiences

Dear brother,

“There has been a growing awareness of the identity and mission of the laity in the Church” (EG 102). In harmony with these words of Pope Francis, the XVII General Chapter reflected upon this topic in order to sensitize the confreres more on the reality of the world of the laity and to involve the latter in our Congregation’s missionary charism. The Chapter document “The ‘audacious project’ in communion with the Xaverian Lay Missionaries” is the result of this reflection. After the introduction (XVII GC 63-66), this document highlights the foundations of the Xaverian Lay Missionaries: a family of lay missionaries, participation in the Xaverian charism, departure for the mission, their autonomy and collaboration with the Xaverians. In its conclusion the document entrusts some guidelines to the General Direction for its six-year term (XVII GC 67-72).

Furthermore, in the promotion of the Xaverian Lay Missionaries, we must always bear in mind XVII GC 66 , which subdivides the laity into two categories:

a. collaborators, associates, volunteers and friends, former Xaverian students;
b. Lay Xaverians.

These two categories are not alternatives, but represent two ways of participation in the Xaverian charism. It is therefore necessary to accompany each group according to its own nature. Nevertheless, in the light of the Chapter guideline, we must emphasize the second category, inspired by the biblical topic of vocation. Indeed, the decision to belong to the Xaverian Lay Missionaries must be the fruit of a founding vocational experience: God calls people gratuitously and they respond generously to this call. It is precisely this category of lay people that constitutes the subject matter of this letter.

In harmony with these guidelines, the General Direction has appointed Fr. Javier Peguero Pérez as the coordinator of the work that the Congregation does in the world of lay people (XVII GC 72B), and it has set up a team for the Xaverian Lay Missionaries (XVII GC 72C), which is currently composed of two Xaverians (Fr. R. Giannattasio and Fr. G. Signori) and three members of the Italian Xaverian Lay Missionaries (Simone Breccia, Beatrice Petrocchi and Franca Rivolta). This team held its first meeting on 10 December 2017.

After reflecting on the guidelines given by the XVII General Chapter, and bearing in mind the work carried out by the Xaverian Lay Missionaries team, the General Direction proposes the following program to you:

1.- At Circumscription level we ask the Regional Superiors and the Superiors of the Delegations to appoint a confrere as the reference person of the Xaverian Lay Missionaries and as the animator of the Xaverian communities in view of strengthening mutual communion (XVIICG 72A). Furthermore, in order to promote a more profound mutual knowledge, in the Circumscription planning, the Superiors should organize periods of convivencia between the Xaverians and the Xaverian Lay Missionaries (XVII GC 72E).

2.- At Congregation level, and in line with what the Chapter document says, the first task of the Xaverian Lay Missionaries team is “to gather the significant experiences of collaboration between the Xaverians and the Lay Xaverians in our various Circumscriptions”. After this is done, it will be possible to elaborate a plan of work in order to “help the groups of Lay Xaverians to interact with each other” (XVII GC 72C). The gathering of these experiences is therefore the starting point. For this reason, the General Direction asks the Circumscription Superiors to entrust the appointed reference person with the task preparing a report based on the following questions:

a) At the present time, how many groups of Lay Xaverians are there in your Circumscription? Where, or in what city, are they located? How many persons make up the various groups? Who are in charge of the groups?

b) Concisely, how would you describe the history of the Lay Xaverians in your Circumscription from the beginning until today? How would you outline the stages of its development?

c) What tasks or services do these groups of Lay Xaverians carry out in relation to the Xaverians or the local Church? Do the Lay Xaverians of your Circumscription interact with other Lay Xaverians of the other Xaverian Circumscriptions? If the answer is affirmative, could you explain what kind of interaction exists between them?

d) In the light of XVII GC 66, which subdivides the laity into two categories as we previously explained, how could you define the Lay Xaverians of your Circumscription? Is there an ongoing transformation or evolution from category “a” to category “b”? If so, how would you describe this change?

e) What degree of structuring have the Lay Xaverians of your Circumscription achieved at the level of charism, government, activity, promotion, administration and financial management? Could you give a brief description of the degree of structuration in these areas? If you have any written documents on this topic, could you please send them to me via e-mail?

f) Regarding the formation of the laity, do you have a formative project and does it have a Xaverian hallmark? At the present time, what degree of knowledge do the Lay Xaverians groups have of the Congregation’s documents (Constitutions, Testament Letter, biography of Conforti and St. Francis Xavier)?

g) In relation to the future, how does your Circumscription’s Lay Xaverians reality present itself in the short to mid term?

h) If you do not yet have Lay Xaverians in your Circumscription, could you explain why this has not yet been implemented? Above all, and looking to the future, what do you plan to do in order to fulfill this project?

3.- In replying to the questions, we ask you that the report be no longer than four pages and that it reach me no later than 30 June 2018 (peguero@saveriani.org). In the report, please indicate the name of the confrere you have appointed as the reference person of the Lay Xaverians in your Circumscription. The Lay Xaverians team will study this material as it arrives. Then, in a meeting scheduled for 1 September 2018, we will prepare a work plan for the six-year term that will be submitted to the General Direction. The other topics – the Vademecum (XVII GC 72D) and a missionary presence with mixed communities (XVII GC 72F) – will be the object of reflection in the next meetings. As we move ahead, and with the contribution of all, we will take the necessary steps for concretizing these initiatives indicated by the XVII General Chapter.
