Il cammino dei saveriani in Tailandia
Tre buone notizie
“Il Signore, per mezzo del Fondatore, ci ha riuniti in una famiglia religiosa per rendere presente tra i non cristiani la Chiesa che è comunione e fraternità nuova in Cristo. Come famiglia condividiamo tutto…” (C 35)
In queste ultime due settimane, queste parole delle nostre Costituzioni hanno assunto una particolare rilevanza nella nostra vita qui in Tailandia. Tre eventi molto significativi, che ci fanno percepire come realmente la missione sia comunione, una comunione con Dio, nella nostra Congregazione con tutti i nostri fratelli Saveriani e con tutte le persone che in modo diverso condividono il nostro carisma e spiritualità. Il 14 Settembre il nostro confratello P. Gordianus Afri,sx è arrivato in Tailandia, sua destinazione e il 22 Settembre P. Edgar Nava,sx ci ha raggiunti. Infine, il 21 Settembre abbiamo ricevuto dal Padre Generale e dal suo Consiglio la comunicazione dell’erezione della Delegazione Saveriana della Tailandia e la nomina del Superiore Delegato e dei consiglieri. Queste sono davvero tre buone notizie per la Tailandia.
In Tailandia noi Missionari Saveriani siamo impegnati nel primo annuncio del Vangelo, che “introduce l’uomo nel mistero dell’amore di Dio” (RMi 44) e libera la persona e ogni comunità umana. Noi crediamo che questo impegno sia il desiderio di Dio per noi: qualcosa di irrevocabile, “ad vitam”. Questo è per noi il significato reale del “Decreto per l’erezione della Delegazione Saveriana della Tailandia”: la presenza Saveriana in Tailandia è espressione del nostro carisma al servizio della Chiesa. Noi crediamo che sia stato lo Spirito Santo ad inviarci qui e ora questo è confermato dalla Congregazione, attraverso la Direzione Generale. Questa importante decisione ha ratificato un continuo processo di discernimento. A partire dall’arrivo dei due primi confratelli nel Gennaio 2012 abbiamo provato ad immergerci nei contesti in cui siamo stati chiamati a lavorare, diventando pian piano consapevoli delle sfide e delle difficoltà da affrontare in questo paese Buddhista. Lungo questi sei anni di presenza in Tailandia abbiamo cominciato a interrogarci su quale possa essere la “migliore via per essere missionari” in questo paese. Abbiamo preso dimora in diversi posti (Nonthaburi, Km48, Samut Saakhon e, più recentemente, Khlong Toei e Um Phang)... Ora possiamo comprendere con più chiarezza i cammini che stiamo percorrendo e quelli che si potrebbero aprire davanti a noi, per sviluppare la presenza delle nostre comunità in Tailandia. Per questo motivo sentiamo che questo sia stato davvero il momento opportuno per passare da “il gruppo saveriano in Tailandia” a una più formale “Circoscrizione/Delegazione Saveriana della Tailandia”.
Per ora in Tailandia sono presenti due comunità: una nel nord-ovest del paese, in un’ area segnata dalla presenza di diversi gruppi etnici-tribali, al confine con il Myanmar; l’altra a Bangkok, “inserita” nel contesto di una grande baraccopoli e “mista” con i laici. Entrambe le comunità sono arricchite dal passaggio di numerosi volontari, sia tailandesi che provenienti da altri paesi, coinvolgendoli nelle nostre dinamiche comunitarie e considerando la loro presenza un aiuto e una “provocazione” per il nostro stile di vita missionario.
L’arrivo di Gordianus e Edgar arricchisce molto il gruppo saveriano: il fatto di essere sette invece di cinque ci dà un senso di stabilità e ci incoraggia, facendoci percepire che quella in Tailandia è una missione accompagnata con cura dalla nostra famiglia Saveriana. Ricevere nuovi confratelli è un rinnovamento, un movimento che viene da Dio con il dono della molteplicità di punti di vista circa le sfide che ci aspettano. Prima di tutto, ci rallegriamo perché ora siamo riuniti come famiglia, da tutti i continenti nei quali noi Saveriani stiamo lavorando, con il Vangelo nelle nostre mani (e, speriamo, anche nei nostri cuori …) e con tutta l’energia e l’immaginazione pronte per essere spese nel servire i fratelli non cristiani, e tra di essi in modo speciale i poveri (C 9.) Sorpresi da un Dio già presente a fianco dell’umanità a cui ci sentiamo inviati, amandola e prendendosi cura di essa, anche noi allora desideriamo essere un’espressione di questa prossimità di Dio al popolo Tailandese.
Le buone notizie ricevute nelle ultime due settimane hanno animato anche la nostra riflessione. Riscontriamo tra di noi un certo fermento: nuove idee, possibili futuri sviluppi della presenza Saveriana, a partire da un maggiore coinvolgimento nel dialogo interreligioso e nella conoscenza delle culture tribali presso le quali siamo presenti nel Nord del paese. Ringraziamo Dio per la forma di comunità “mista” espressa a Bangkok. Riteniamo che questo modello di presenza sia davvero adatto al nostro essere annunciatori del Regno in questo contesto e ringraziamo infine il Signore per tutti i giovani volontari che vengono a bussare alla nostra porta per inserirsi nella nostra opera missionaria.

THE XAVERIAN JOURNEY IN THAILAND
Three pieces of good news
“Through our Founder, the Lord has gathered us into one religious family so that the Church, the new brotherhood in union with Christ, may be made present among non-Christians. As a family we share everything...” (C 35)
In the last two weeks this paragraph of our Constitutions has become prominent in our life here in Thailand, due to three meaningful events that made us feel that really mission is communion with God, in our Congregation, among all our Xaverian brothers and with all the people that in different ways share our charism and spirituality. On 14 September our confrere Fr. Gordianus Afri (Indonesia) arrived in Thailand; on 22 September, another confrere, Fr. Edgar Nava (México) joined our community as well. Furthermore, on 21 September we received the news regarding the erection of the Xaverian Delegation of Thailand and the appointment of Superior Delegate and Councillors by the General Council. These are three pieces of good news for Thailand.
In Thailand, as missionaries, we are committed to the first proclamation of the Gospel, which “introduces man into the mystery of the love of God” (RMi 44) and set the person and any human community free. We believe that this commitment is in accordance with God’s desire and is something irrevocable, ad vitam. These words, for us, represent the real meaning of the decree for the erection of the Delegation of Thailand: the Xaverian presence in Thailand is expression of our charism at the service of the Church. We believe it was the Holy Spirit who sent us to work here, and this is now “formally” confirmed by the Congregation through the General Direction. A process of discernment has been ratified through this important decision: we feel that since the arrival in Thailand of the first two confreres in January 2012, we have been trying to immerse ourselves in the different contexts in which we are working, growing little by little to be more aware of the challenges and difficulties that we have to face in this Buddhist country. In our six years presence in Thailand we have struggled to discover what “the best way of being missionaries here” could possibly be. Many different places have welcomed us since the beginning (Nonthaburi, Km48, Samut Saakhon and, recently, Khlong Toei and Um Phang)... Now we can see more clearly the ways in which we are already walking and those that are open to us in order to develop our missionary communities in Thailand: for this reason we feel that this was the right time to establish the “group in Thailand” as a “Xaverian Circumscription”.
At the moment in Thailand we have two communities: one in the north-west of the country, in a multi-tribal context close to the border with Myanmar; the other in Bangkok, “inserted” in a slum area and “mixed” with lay people. Both the communities are open to welcome volunteers both Thai and foreigners, involving them in our community dynamics and considering them both as a help and a challenge for our missionary lifestyle.
The arrival of two “new” confreres greatly enriches our group. Being seven instead of five, gives us a sense of stability and is an encouragement. It makes us feel that Thailand is a mission which our Congregation takes very much care of. Receiving new confreres is like a renewal, a movement that is promoted by God’s Spirit. The plurality of points of view about the challenges we are facing is certainly a gift of God. We rejoice specially because we are gathered as a Family from the four continents where we are working, bringing the Gospel in our hands (and also in our hearts...) ready to spend all our energies and imagination for the service of non Christians, and among them especially the poor (C 9). Convinced that God is already present, loves and takes care of his people, we want to be an expression of this proximity of God to the Thais.
The good news received in the last two weeks are affecting our reflections and plans: new ideas, new insights. We can observe among us a sort of ferment... we talk about possible future developments, starting from a greater involvement in interreligious dialogue and in the knowledge of the tribal cultures among which we work. We think that in Bangkok the model of the “mixed community” with lay people is fitting our missionary commitment and we are thankful to God who sends a lot of youth as volunteers.
