P. Giovanni Ceresoli

Intorno alle 22.00 del 22 ottobre 2011, vigilia della Canonizzazione del Fondatore, al St. Andrew's Hospice di Airdrie (Scozia), dove era ricoverato da una quindicina di giorni per tumore ai polmoni, è morto P. Giovanni Ceresoli. Aveva 65 anni compiuti essendo nato a Filago (Bergamo) il 19 agosto 1946.
La storia della vocazione missionaria di P. Giovanni incomincia con la lettera della maestra di quinta elementare al Rettore della casa saveriana di Alzano. L'insegnante si faceva dovere di «comunicare che, tra gli alunni della classe V di Filago-Marne, si distingue per particolari doti d'intelligenza e capacità, Ceresoli Giovanni. Egli è inoltre di carattere buono e leale». Si augurava che il Padre potesse incontrare il ragazzo e che l'incontro avesse una conclusione positiva «per il bene del fanciullo e per quello del nobile apostolato missionario» (15.6.57). Giovanni dopo un mese in montagna con la comunità degli aspiranti missionari, fece domanda di essere ammesso all'Istituto di Alzano Lombardo e fu accettato.
Questo il suo percorso formativo: 57-60, Alzano Lombardo, Medie; 60-62, Cremona, Ginnasio Superiore; 62-63, S. Pietro in Vincoli, Noviziato; 63-66, Tavernerio, Liceo Classico; 66-71 Cardross (Scozia), Propedeutica e Teologia. Professo perpetuo il 3.10.1969, fu ordinato presbitero a Glasgow il 27.9.1970.
I tratti caratteristici della sua personalità sono in bella evidenza nella presentazione per l'ammissione ai ministeri ordinati: «Buone doti di mente – senso pratico –buona pietà – carattere forte – attaccamento al proprio compito – riuscita negli studi – disponibile – comprensivo – dipendenza dai Superiori, dai quali però deve essere ancora seguito con cura particolare» (6.12.69).
La vita apostolica di Giovanni si divide in modo quasi uguale tra Sierra Leone e Gran Bretagna.
Dal 1971 al 1977 lavorò in Sierra Leone, a Lunsar (71-73, Vice parroco) e a Kambia (73-77, Direttore di scuola, Economo, Viceparroco e poi Parroco).
Destinato alla Gran Bretagna, fu amministratore del seminario saveriano di Coatbridge (77-82), compito che il P. Giovanni svolse, come gli scrisse il Consigliere interlocutore: «con la dedizione e l'entusiasmo che ti sono caratteristici» (15.12.82).
Dopo un breve periodo di aggiornamento a Roma, nel 1983 ritornò in Sierra Leone. Vice parroco a Magburaka (83-84), ricoprì in seguito compiti impegnativi nella diocesi di Makeni: Ispettore scuole cattoliche (83-88), Direttore Centro Pastorale (84-88), Procuratore diocesano (88-89). Infine fu Viceparroco a Kabala (89-90).
Venne fuori il suo carattere forte, di lottatore, non senza difficoltà a 'connettere' con qualcuno, ma anche capace di evitare rotture irreparabili, magari attraverso un cambio di comunità o di circoscrizione.
Nel 1990 ritornò in Gran Bretagna, rettore a Londra (90-91) e poi ancora a Coatbridge come rettore ed economo (91-95) e infine a Londra (95-98). Contemporaneamente (93-98) fu anche economo regionale.
Dal 1998 al 2004 fu di nuovo in Sierra Leone, a Kissy, dove fu incaricato di attività sociali ed economo regionale (01-04). Durante la guerra civile nel 1999 fu catturato dai ribelli,insieme con altri Saveriani.
Visse la tappa finale della sua vita in Scozia (2004-2011) impegnato nell'animazione missionaria, nell’economia regionale e, dal 2009, parroco a St. Alphonsus/Glasgow.
Di lui i confratelli hanno detto: «Era un confratello non convenzionale (fuori dalle ordinarie formalità), a volte spigoloso, ma sempre cordiale e aperto. Si è prestato per tutti i servizi che gli sono stati richiesti» (Mons. Biguzzi). E sempre con totale disponibilità. Come a Kissy nel gennaio del '99, quando i ribelli avevano deciso di portar via con loro il più anziano della comunità: «È stato John a dire: "Se lui … allora tutti noi"! E si è alzato senza esitazione! E la cosa più bella che ricordo di lui» (G. Berton).

Fr. Giovanni Ceresoli died on 22 October 2011, on the eve of the Founder’s canonization, at St. Andrew’s Hospice, Airdrie, Scotland, where he had been admitted fifteen days previously suffering from lung cancer.
Born in Filago (Bergamo, Italy) on 19 August 1946, he was 65 years old.
The story of the missionary vocation of Fr. Giovanni began with a letter written by his primary school teacher to the Rector of the Xaverian community of Alzano, in which she said: «there is a pupil in the fifth grade of the Filago-Marne school, called Giovanni Ceresoli, who stands out for his intelligence and practical capabilities ». The teacher expressed the hope that the Rector might meet with the boy and that this would turn out well «for the boy himself and for the noble missionary apostolate » (15.6.57). After one month in the mountains with the community of the missionary aspirants, Giovanni was admitted to the Institute in Alzano Lombardo.
He completed the following formation program: 1957-60, Alzano Lombardo, junior High School; 1960-62, Cremona, senior High School; 1962-63, S. Pietro in Vincoli, Novitiate; 1963-66, Tavernerio, Lyceum; 1966-71 Cardross (Scotland), propaedeutics and Theology. He made his Final Profession on 3 October 1969 and was ordained priest in Glasgow, on 27 September 1970.
The characteristic traits of his personality were outlined in the report presenting him for admission to the ordained ministries: «He has a good mind – he is very practical –he possesses good piety – a strong character – attached to his work – successful student – available – understanding – dependent on the Superiors, who never the less still need to follow him with special care » (6.12.69). The apostolic life of Giovanni was divided almost equally between Sierra Leone and Great Britain.
From 1971 until 1977 he worked in Sierra Leone, at Lunsar (1971-73, assistant priest) and at Kambia (1973-77, Director of the school, treasurer, assistant priest and then parish priest).
Assigned to Great Britain, he served as treasurer at the Xaverian seminary in Coatbridge (1977-82), a task that Fr. Giovanni carried out, in the words of the General Councilor who represented the Region: «with your typical dedication and enthusiasm » (15.12.82).
After a brief period of aggiornamento in Rome, he re turned to Sierra Leone in 1983. He served as assistant priest at Magburaka (1983-84), before going to Makeni, where he was appointed to demanding tasks: Inspector of the Catholic schools (1983-88), Director of the Pastoral Center (1984-88), diocesan Procurator. (1988-89). Finally, he was sent as assistant priest to Kabala (1989-90).
His strong character emerged: Giovanni was a fighter and sometimes found it difficult to ‘connect’ with some, but he was also capable of avoiding irreparable breakdown in relationships, perhaps through a change of community or circumscription.
He returned to Great Britain in 1990, where he served as rector in London (1990-91) and then in Coatbridge as rector and treasurer (1991-95) and, finally, back to London (1995-98). He was Regional Treasurer in the period 1993-98.
From 1998 until 2004 he was back in Sierra Leone, at Kissy, where he was put in charge of social activities and appointed Regional treasurer (2001-04). In 1999, during the civil war, he was captured by the rebels with other Xaverians.
He lived the final years of his life in Scotland (2004-2011), working in Missionary Animation, as Regional treasurer and, from 2009, as parish priest at St. Alphonsus in Glasgow.
Some confreres offered this testimony:«He was an unconventional confrere, sometimes touchy, but always cordial and open. He willingly took on all the services that were asked of him » (Bishop Biguzzi). He was always completely available, as in January 1999, in Kissy, when the rebels had decided to take away the oldest member of the community with them: «It was John who said: “If he goes … then we all go”! And he got up without hesitation! This is my most wonderful memory of him» (G. Berton).
