P. Achille Figini

Il 9 giugno 2011, all'ospedale Angeles del Carmen di Guadalajara, alle 13.00, è morto il P. Achille Figini per complicazioni dovute a insufficienza renale. Era in cura dal giugno 2010.
Aveva 83 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Merate (Como) il 29.2.1928.
P. Figini entrò tra i Saveriani nel 1943. Aveva quindici anni, viveva a Bergamo ed era al quinto anno dell'Istituto Tecnico Commerciale. Per questo fu iscritto alla quarta ginnasio a Grumone Nel 45-46 fece l'anno di noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli: «Buono, semplice, obbediente, pronto al sacrificio – si legge nella valutazione finale – Pietà e vocazione, sentite e amate. Ha lavorato con tanta buona volontà».
Emessa la Prima Professione «nelle mani dell'appena eletto Superiore Generale, P. Giovanni Gazza, i neoprofessi passarono a Parma gremita di studenti di teologia e di filosofia e di molti Padri espulsi dalla Cina. L'anno seguente aprirono la casa di Desio e là i liceisti continuarono il corso filosofico». Dopo due anni di prefettato a Grumone, affrontò lo studio della teologia a Piacenza con la sorpresa alla fine del primo anno di problemi di salute. Fu «aiutato [dal Foglio Rosa] a sopportare tutto con serenità d'animo. Tutto, nelle mani di Dio, serve per la sua gloria. Dopo questi pochi mesi di letto sento e mi accorgo che il mio cuore si è dilatato. L'amore sorge dall'amore» (13.12.52). Fu ordinato presbitero a Piacenza il 26.3.1955.
Dopo l'ordinazione fu assegnato alla comunità di Vicenza per l'insegnamento e il ministero. Ma dopo appena un anno dovette lasciare la comunità per curarsi. Anche questa volta affrontò la prova con grande serenità. Richiesto dal superiore: che cosa pensava di poter fare una volta rimessosi in salute, rispose: «Io intendo ubbidire a Lei. Determinare che cosa possa fare fra due mesi ritengo spetti al medico, non a me. E poiché Lei desidera conoscere il mio pensiero per la scelta di un ufficio non mi rimane che indicarle quello di Direttore spirituale» (7.4.57).
Dall'ottobre 1957 all'ottobre 1965 fece parte della comunità di S. Pietro in Vincoli con l'ufficio di confessore. Quella prolungata permanenza nel mondo del noviziato canonico, risultò un vero e proprio corso residenziale di spiritualità. P. Figini non cessò mai di ringraziare P. Giovani Gazza per questa esperienza.
Nel 1965 venne mandato in Spagna e fu il primo Maestro dei novizi nel primo Noviziato della Circoscrizione, a Pozuelo de Alarcon (66-72). E tutto questo con simpatia per il mondo spagnolo: «L'impressione è buona. Caratteri aperti, gioviali, generosi … sono tanto contento d'essere qui anche perché non l'ho voluto io ma il Signore» (2.4.66).
Nel 1973 fu destinato al Messico. Lasciò la Spagna piuttosto soddisfatto, come scriveva il 6.11.72: «Parto contento perché noto un certo clima di entusiasmo e di ottimismo». Dopo tre anni però tornò in Spagna: animatore e formatore a Pozuelo de Alarcon (76-79). Gli fu pure possibile frequentare la "Leon XIII" e conseguire la Licenza in teologia pastorale.
Nel 1979 chiese e ottenne di ritornare in Messico. Questa fu la sua destinazione definitiva: dal 79 all'81 fu il pastore della missione di Santa Cruz dove avrebbe desiderato rimanere per sempre.
Dal 1981 al 1990 la comunità lo volle Superiore regionale, rinnovandogli per tre volte il mandato. Dal 1991 al 2001 fu Maestro dei Novizi. Dal 2001 al 2004, Rettore di S. Juan del Rio. Infine dal 2004 al 2010, confessore e insegnante in Noviziato a Salamanca. E sempre disponibile alle richieste di servizi pastorali, sacramentali. Al punto da doverlo frequentemente invitare a non dimenticare la salute e l'età,
P. Figini, un uomo di Dio con il gusto della radicalità, per se stesso, prima di tutto e poi per gli altri. Gli scriveva P. Generale il 10.3.2005: «Vedo che tutta la tua vita è stata un servizio alla Famiglia nei due settori forse più difficili: la formazione e la direzione. Questo tuo servizio si è svolto soprattutto in una regione giovane come il Messico, e quindi con tutta una tradizione saveriana da inventare. So che non sempre è stato facile, che non tutti i frutti sono maturati allo stesso modo, ma ugualmente il Signore ha permesso di piantare la piantina saveriana in Messico e di farla crescere al di là delle nostre previsioni».

Fr. Achille Figini died of complications resulting from kidney failure on June 9, 2011, at the Angeles del Carmen hospital, Guadalajara (Mexico). He had been receiving medical treatment since June 2010.
Born at Merate (Como, Italy) on Feb. 29, 1928, he was 83 years old.
Fr. Figini joined the Xaverians in 1943, when he was fifteen years old and living in Bergamo. He was enrolled in the fourth year of high school at Grumone. He was a novice at S. Pietro in Vincoli in 1945-46 and the final report said of him: «He is a good, simple and obedient young man who is willing to make sacrifices. He has a keen sense and love of piety and his vocation. He has worked with a lot of good will».
After making the Profession «in the hands of the recently elected Superior General, Fr. Giovanni Gazza, the newly professed students moved to Parma, which was then packed with theology and philosophy students and Fathers who had been expelled from China. The following year, the house of Desio was opened and the lyceum students went there to continue the philosophy courses».
After two years as prefect at Grumone, he studied Theology at Piacenza and had to endure the unpleasant surprise of health problems at the end of his first year there. He was «helped to endure it all with a serene heart. Everything, placed in the hands of God, serves His glory. These months confined to be have broadened my heart. Love springs forth from love» (Dec. 13, 1952). He was ordained priest at Piacenza on March 26, 1955.
After his ordination, he was assigned to the community of Vicenza to teach and work in the pastoral ministry. However, after just one year, he had to leave the community on health grounds. This time too he faced the problem with great serenity. When the superior asked what he thought he could do when he recovered, he replied: «I intend to obey you. It is not my task to discern what I might be able to do in two months; that is a decision for the doctor. I would like, however, to be a Spiritual Director » (April 7, 1957).
From October 1957 until October 1965, he was confessor in the community of S. Pietro in Vincoli. His prolonged stay in the Novitiate proved to be a residential course in spirituality. Fr. Figini never ceased to thank Fr. Giovanni Gazza for this experience.
In 1965 he was sent to Spain and was the first novice master of the Region’s first novitiate at Pozuelo de Alarcon (1966-72). He became very fond of Spain: «I have a good impression; the people are open, jovial and generous… I am very happy to be here also because it was God’s will, not mine » (April 2, 1966).
He was assigned to Mexico in 1973. He was satisfied when he left Spain, as he wrote on Nov. 6 1972: «I leave happy because I observe a certain atmosphere of enthusiasm and optimism». However, three years later he was back in Spain, where he served as animator and formator at Pozuelo de Alarcon (1976-79). He was also able to study at the “Leon XIII” and obtain the Masters in pastoral theology. In 1979 he was allowed to return to Mexico and this was his definite assignment: from 1979 until 1981 he was the parish priest at the mission of Santa Cruz and he would have liked to remain there forever. In the period 1981-90 the community chose him as Regional Superior, renewing his mandate three times.
From 1991 until 2001, he was Novice Master. From 2001 until 2004, he was rector at S. Juan del Rio. Finally, from 2004 until 2010, he served as confessor and teacher in the novitiate at Salamanca. He was always available for pastoral and sacramental ministry, even to the extent of having to be reminded frequently of his age and health problems.
Fr. Figini was a man of God with a radical approach to himself, first and foremost, and then to others.
The Superior General wrote to him on March 10 2005: «I see that your whole life has been a service to the Family in formation and government; these are, perhaps, the two most difficult sectors of all. You have carried out these services above all in the young Region of Mexico, where Xaverian tradition had to be invented from scratch. I know that it has not always been easy and that not all the fruits have grown in the same way, but the Lord has made it possible to plant the small Xaverian tree in Mexico and make it grow beyond our expectations ».
