Fr. Angelo Menoncin

A Parma, in Casa Madre, è spirato verso le 06.10 del 9.3.1999 Fr. Angelo Menoncin. Si apprestava a raggiungere l’ospedale per la dialisi alla quale, dal 94 in poi, doveva sottoporsi tre volte la settimana; lo stava accompagnando Fr. Vincenzo Asolan: questi lo lasciò un attimo in portineria per andare a prendere l’auto e, al ritorno, lo trovò seduto come in attesa e già morto.
Aveva 82 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Villa del Ferro (VI) il 30 Gennaio 1917.
Fr. Angelo entrò nella nostra famiglia a S. Pietro in Vincoli nel 1933, presentato così dal suo parroco, amico e benefattore dei Saveriani: “E’ sempre stato buono, obbediente, premuroso e può ben riuscire come catechista” (21.8.1933). L’anno successivo fu ammesso al Noviziato e il 28.6.35 emise la Prima Professione che chiese con queste sue tipiche espressioni: “Il novizio Menoncin Angelo… sentendosi chiamato alla bella e santa vocazione Missionaria e Religiosa, domanda con vivo desiderio e con cuore ardente d’essere ammesso alla S. Professione” (27.5.35).
Nell’anno scolastico 1935-36 fu cuoco nella comunità di Parma. Con lo stesso incarico fece parte della comunità della Procura di Roma dal ’36 al ’42 e ancora di quella di Parma dal ’42 al ’46.
Dal ’46 al ’51 fu impegnato nello studio. Frequentò dapprima (46-47) il corso di Medicina per Missionari organizzato dall’Ordine di Malta conseguendo pieni voti e la lode. Per questo, con la prospettiva d farlo giungere agli studi universitari e, forse, anche al presbiterato, fu inviato a Poggio S. Marcello per frequentare le medie con le vocazioni adulte (47-49) e poi a Zelarino per il ginnasio superiore (49-51).
Nel Febbraio del ‘51 ricevette la destinazione per la missione della Sierra Leone che comunicò così al P. Bonardi: “… studiavo con piena indifferenza sempre disposto a proseguire come a interrompere qualora fosse stato così stabilito. Ora sono contento di dimostrare a Dio che non fingevo … Non le nascondo che provo anche un po’ di dispiacere… Mi consola il pensiero d’essere stato eletto combattente in prima linea: partirò contento senza rimpianti. Questa mia povera vita la sacrificherò volentieri per far trionfare Gesù nelle anime” ( Lett. 27 febbraio 51).
Dopo un anno di studio dell’Inglese a Glasgow raggiunse la Sierra Leone e fu infermiere apprezzato e molto attivo a Magebure (53-56). Purtroppo la salute non resse più di tanto e Fr. Angelo ritornò in Italia dove fu impiegato in servizi vari a Parma (57-58), a Montecatini (58-59), a Cremona (59-62); e poi a Madrid (62-64) e a Pozuelo de Alarcon (64-66). Ottenne di ritornare ancora, dal ’66 al ’68, in Sierra Leone, addetto alla Domus di Makeni.
Nel 1968 ritornò definitivamente in Italia e fu, successivamente: a Parma, assistente dei malati (69-71); a Genova-Pegli, addetto all’accoglienza (71-74); a Zelarino, infermiere e incaricato delle pubbliche relazioni (74-90). Dal ’90, per suo esplicito desiderio, visse a Parma, sempre accolto con gioia negli ambienti ospedalieri per la serenità che sapeva infondere in tutti con il tratto e la parola.
I valori che hanno illuminato la vita di Fr. Angelo sono espressi in questa sua preghiera: “O mio dolce Padre, concedete al figlio vostro tutte quelle grazie che desidera, ve le chiede per intercessione della Vergine SS. Fatelo santo, il figlio vostro, riempite il suo cuore del vostro ardente amore, fate che il suo cuore diventi grande come un mare e così possa con il Vostro divino aiuto dissetare e salvare tante anime che costarono il Sangue adorabile del Vostro divin Figlio. Fate che sia umile, paziente, pieno di spirito di sacrificio, generoso e costante: appagate tutti i suoi ardenti desideri! Concedetegli la perseveranza finale…” (5.11.1945).

Brother Angelo Menoncin died at about 6:00 am in the reception area of the Mother House on March 9 1999. He was waiting for a ride to the Hospital from Brother Asolan, for his dialysis, which he did three times a week since 1994, when he reclined at the chair, and died peacefully. He was 82 years old, born at Villa del Ferro (VI) on Jan. 30 1917.
Brother Angelo entered the Xaverian family at S. Pietro in Vincoli in 1933, and then started Novitiate and professed his Religious Missionary Vows on June 26, 1935. He was introduced in the following words by his pastor, friend and benefactor of the Xaverians: "He is always good, obedient, attentive, and he will do well as a catechist." (Aug. 21 1933). And before his vows, he wrote in the third person: "he feels call to that beautiful and holy vocation that is missionary religious life, and asks with much desire and with an ardent heart to be admitted to the Holy Profession." (May 27 1935).
Brother Menoncin was then assigned as cook of the community of Parma (1935-36) and of the procure in Rome (1936-42), and then back to Parma (1942-46). He continued his studies in the medical nursing field at the course in Parma of Medicine for Missionaries (1946-47) and passed with honors all the studies. He then continued at the University, and probably even thought of theology studies in view of priesthood, but instead he was asked to serve and study at Poggio S. Marcello (1947-49) and Zelarino till 1951.
In February 1951 Br. Menoncin received the assignment to go to Sierra Leone. He wrote to Fr. Bonardi: "I was studying with much indifference for what could become of my life, ever ready to interrupt my studies if the Superiors wanted me to. Now I'm happy to show to God that I was not kidding... I cannot hide my disappointment in letting go of studies; yet what consoles me is the thought of being chosen to serve in the front lines of missionary activity. This poor life of mine I willingly sacrifice so that Jesus may triumph over souls." (Feb. 27 1951).
After a year of studies in Glasgow, he served for three years at Mangebureh as a nurse (1953-56). Unfortunately, because of health reasons, he had to return to Europe, and served in many capacities both in Italy and Spain, especially taking care of sick confreres and medical expertise. He was at Parma (1957-58), Montecatini (1958-59), Cremona (1959-62), Madrid (1962-64) and Pozuelo de Alarcon (1964-66). He was able to return to Sierra Leone, as responsible of the Domus in Makeni for two years. (1966-68).
In 1968 Br. Menoncin was back in Italy, and served as nurse, as welcoming person, and in public relations at Parma (1968-71), Genova-Pegli (1971-74), and Zelarino (1974-90). He finally asked to reside in Parma in 1990, where his joyful spirit and his encouraging words touched many people.
The values that sustained Brother Angelo in his life are well expressed in the following prayer which he composed in 1945: "Oh my loving Father, give your son the graces which he desires immensely, through the intercession of Our Lady. May he, your son, become saint; fill his heart of your ardent love; may his heart become vast as the sea, so that your divine help may quench the thirsty soul, redeemed by the adorable Blood of Your divine Son. Make him humble, patient, filled with a spirit of sacrifice, generous and faithful; may his most ardent wishes come true! And may You give him the gift of final perseverance…" (Nov. 5 1945). May the Lord welcome him in the joys of Paradise.
