Condividiamo sul Flash la testimonianza personale di + Enrico Solmi, vescovo di Parma e V successore di San Guido Maria Conforti, inizialmente pensata per la redazione del profilo, ma sfortunatamente giunta quando il testo era già in stampa. L’oggetto della e-mail: “In ritardo, ma con affetto”.

“Da poco vescovo di Parma, cercavo di orientarmi nella città e nella Chiesa locale, trovando nell'una e nell’altro non solo punti di contatto, ma vere e proprie compresenze e intrecci nella trama che fa l'ordito delle nostre comunità.

In questo tentativo di farmi una personale piantina del nuovo territorio, a cui ero destinato, entra padre Pozzobon segnando un punto certo di riferimento per disegnare questa mappa.

Mi raggiunse per caso in bicicletta, passandomi di fianco in Pilotta, dove mi riconosce, si ferma, inizia a parlare e io faccio finta di conoscerlo, per poi ricollegare la memoria al volto e al servizio che padre Pozzobon ricopriva.

Così entro un po’ di più nella vita dei Saveriani, che lui conosce a fondo e riesce a rappresentarmi in forma sempre più viva e concreta.

Mi sorprende la conoscenza delle persone, degli studenti e la loro collocazione nella vita diocesana. Poi un viaggio a Roma, ospite della sua automobile, radio come basso continuo, è l'occasione per una conoscenza personale e di un mondo ben più ampio dei miei ristretti orizzonti. Mi parla di tante cose e della sua salute curata da un medico amico in Germania e ancora mi sento piccolo, io che conosco come seconda lingua, l’italiano – la prima è il dialetto che mi ha allevato – e un po’ il francese, goal e corner in inglese, e che mi curo a chilometri zero, sperando sempre di non averne bisogno.

Poi la consuetudine di rapporti, le ordinazioni di diaconi saveriani e il crescere della conoscenza che tracima nella familiarità, mentre Padre Pozzobon lavora e finisce il suo servizio di Provinciale.

Ci si è poi persi di vista, fino alla notizia del suo definitivo viaggio in Cielo per continuare a guardare dall’alto la Chiesa di Parma, ‘saveriana’ nel Fondatore, nell’affetto e nell’aiuto, e la sua Famiglia che ancora per il Vangelo gira il mondo e se lo trova, multietnico e bramoso di fede, qui a Parma attorno alle reliquie di Chi vede il mondo come una ‘grande famiglia’”.

Enrico Solmi, Bishop of Parma and 5^th successor of St Guido Maria Conforti, which was originally meant as a contribution to the biographical sketch of Fr. Carlo Pozzobon, but that was handed in late, when the biographical sketch was already due to go to press. The object of the e-mail read: “late but with love.”

“I had been Bishop of Parma only for a while and I was trying to familiarise with the city and the local Church – in both I could discover, not only common points, but also true forms of coexistence and interrelations, which form the warp and the weft of the fabric of our communities.

As I was attempting to draw a personal map of the new territory to which I had been assigned, Fr. Pozzobon stepped in to provide a reliable reference point for the drawing of that map. By chance, he reached me on his bicycle: in Pilotta he passed by me, recognised me, and stopped to talk with me. I pretended to know him, until I managed to connect the memory of his face with the role he was filling.

This is how I entered a little bit in the life of the Xaverians whom he knew deeply and was able to illustrate to me in an increasingly lively and concrete manner.

I was surprised by his knowledge of the persons, the students and their placement in the life of the Diocese.

Then, I travelled once to Rome, as a guest in his car; while the radio kept playing in the background, I had the chance to know him more personally, and to know a world much larger than that of my narrow horizons. He talked about many things and of his health, which was taken care of by a German doctor who was one of his friends. Once again, I felt so small: my second language is Italian – the first being the dialect in which I was raised –, a bit of French, and the English words “goal” and “corner” [from soccer]; as for taking care of my health, I don’t go farther than a kilometre, obviously always hoping not to need it.  

Later on, we had frequent meetings, as for the diaconal ordinations of the Xaverians, and our growing mutual knowledge overflew and became familiarity during the time when Fr. Pozzobon was working as Regional superior, till the completion of his tenure.

Subsequently, we lost sight of each other, till the news of his final journey to Heaven from where he continues caring for the Church of Parma, which is ‘Xaverian’ in the Founder, in affection and in help; and he continues caring for his Family that still goes around the world, for the sake of the Gospel, and then finds it – a multi-ethnic and faith-yearning world – here, in Parma, around the relics of the One who views the world as one ‘great family’.”
