All’ospedale Koga di Miyazaki, alle ore 04.30 del 27 marzo 1998 , è morto il P. Renzo Contarini. Si è concluso così il doloroso calvario iniziato nel settembre dello scorso anno quando una visita medica rivelò la presenza di diffuse forme tumorali che richiesero un intervento chirurgico, chemioterapia e soprattutto l’uso intensivo di antidolorifici. Uscito dall’ospedale nei primi giorni di gennaio, venne assistito fraternamente nella nostra casa di Ehira-Miyazaki.
Il 10 marzo le condizioni del Padre si aggravarono. Il 26 i confratelli accettarono il suggerimento dei medici e lo ricoverarono all’ospedale dove, poche ore dopo, P. Renzo cessò di vivere. Aveva quasi settantasette anni, essendo nato a Revine-Lago (Treviso) il giorno 1.5.1921.
P. Renzo entrò nel 1932 nella Scuola Apostolica di Vicenza, presentato in modo lusinghiero dal suo Arciprete il quale non mancava di sottolineare che il giovane aspirante “discende (da parte di mamma) dalla famiglia Vecellio [la famiglia del Tiziano] di Pieve di Cadore”. Frequentati i tre anni del Ginnasio inferiore, passò a Grumone per il Ginnasio superiore e, nel 1937, a S. Pietro in Vincoli per il Noviziato. Il 12 settembre del 1938 emise la Prima Professione. Fu quindi a Parma per il Liceo che interruppe dopo il secondo anno perché i Superiori lo inviarono a Massa della Lucania come insegnante. L’anno successivo fece il suo servizio di assistente (Prefettato) a Poggio S. Marcello (Ancona). Dal 1942 al 1946 frequentò la Teologia a Parma dove fu ordinato Presbitero il 20 aprile 1946.
Dopo l’ordinazione il P. Renzo lavorò per quattro anni nelle case di formazione d’Italia: Grumone (46-47), Poggio S. Marcello (47-49) e Cremona (49-50).
Nel 1950 fu destinato alla missione del Giappone che raggiunse il 9 dicembre dello stesso anno. Appresa magistralmente la lingua, nel 1952 iniziò il suo più che quarantennale servizio missionario nelle diverse comunità cristiane: Takanabe (52-54), Hamadera (54-65), Miyakonojo (65-67), Miyazaki (67-70) e, dopo i due anni di aggiornamento negli USA (70-72), Minami-Miyazaki (73-80) e infine Yakushima (81-97).
Di questo lungo servizio si può ricordare che il P. Renzo, dotato di una notevole capacità di contatto con le persone, preferì sempre il lavoro pastorale: quando nel 67 fu nominato Superiore Religioso dei Saveriani in Giappone, non resistette a lungo: dopo un anno rassegnò le dimissioni e tornò a lavorare tra la gente.
Il Buon Dio accolga nel suo Regno questo suo figlio che per più di quarant’anni lo ha servito in terra Giapponese e che nella domanda di ammissione al Suddiaconato (1945) aveva scritto: “Ho presente la mia indegnità e insieme l’onore e le responsabilità che questo primo Ordine Maggiore importa e prepara. Ma non dimentico che il Buon Dio mi ha sempre aiutato nonostante tutto e nutro confidenza che mi aiuterà, nel grande bisogno, largamente”.

Fr. Renzo Contarini died at Koga Hospital of Miyazaki at 4:30am of March 27 1998, following a long calvary with cancer which required chemo, surgery and lots of pain killers. He was assisted dearly by our confreres of Ehira-Miyazaki. He was 76 years old, born at Revine-Lago (Treviso) on May 1 1921.
Fr. Renzo entered the Xaverians at Vicenza in 1932, with an introductory letter from his parish priest that described him as an "aspiring youth who comes from the Vecellio family, (Tiziano came from there) from his mother side, of Pieve di Cadore." He continued his studies at Grumone in 1937, S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate concluded with the Religious Profession on Sept. 12 1938, then Parma with two-years of teaching and prefect at Massa della Lucania and Poggio S. Marcello (Ancona). He was ordained priest on April 20 1946 in Parma.
Following his ordination, Fr. Renzo worked in formation in Italy for four years; at Grumone (1946-47), Poggio S. Marcello (1947-49) and Cremona (1949-50). Fr. Renzo received his assignment to Japan, which he reached on Dec. 9 1950. He worked for 40+ years in pastoral settings: Takanabe (1952-54), Hamadera (1954-65), Miyakonojo (1965-67), Miyazaki (1967-70) and after two years of aggiornamento in the USA (1970-72), at Minami-Miyazaki (73-80) and Yakushima (81-97). He was elected Regional Superior in 1967, but he resigned after a year.
Of this long service in pastoral mission ministry, we can recall that Fr. Renzo was gifted with great abilities of establishing friendships with people, and therefore it was natural for him to work in pastoral settings. In his first years of ministry at Hamadera, he worked hard in reconciling Japanese and Koreans in his parish. He showed particular interest for the sick. He often visited them in their families or small clinics, bringing them comfort and hope. He often visited a small hospital of Tuberculosis patients, 7 miles away, and was a ray of light and joy for them. His pastoral work revolved around the formation of the community, which responded with fervor and faithfulness. And for the youth of the parish, he founded and sustained the Scouts.
Fr. Sottocornola remarked: “He spent 17 years at Yakushima island. At the beginning he lived in a small shackled house, to the surprise of the local people. He was sustained by two characteristics of his life: his missionary spirit and simple lifestyle. I don’t believe there was a Christian community there; they never had a priest; there was never a church. Well, Fr. Renzo did all of these things.” In this period he studied the life of Giovanni Battista Sidotti, a martyr of Japan of the 18th century, and made him known.
In the request for admission to the Sub-diaconate in 1945, he wrote: "I am aware of my unworthiness of this ministry; yet at the same time, I know of what honor and responsibility this ministry entails and prepares myself. I never forget that the Good Lord has ever helped me, no matter what, and I am confident that he will be by my side and bestow on me his greatest blessings."
His ashes were placed in our chapel at Ehira, and also at Yakushima, after requests from the Christians there. In this way Fr. Contarini will remain forever in that island which was so dear to him and to the martyr Sidotti whom he admired for his missionary spirit. May the Good Lord welcome him, his son who worked tirelessly in the Land of Japan for over 40 years.
