P. Michele Galli

All’ospedale di Pekambaru (Indonesia), il 24 settembre, è morto improvvisamente P. Michele Galli mentre era in attesa di un intervento oculistico per la seconda cateratta. Aveva 84 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Ranica (Bergamo) il 22 aprile 1928.
Nella scelta di P. Michele di diventare missionario, un ruolo rilevante lo ha svolto la mamma, Felicita Testa, tessitrice, rimasta vedova nel 1936 all’età di 31 anni, con quattro figli rispettivamente di anni uno, tre, sette e otto. P. Michele, nell’intervista per il Bollettino parrocchiale alla conclusione delle le ultime vacanze passate in Italia, quelle del 2009, ricordava: «Finite le elementari, ho lavorato in una fornace di Ranica fino a 15 anni. Per 4 anni ho fatto il “piccolo” in ufficio, poi il factotum. E così ho aiutato a mantenere la famiglia. … Poi è arrivata la vocazione … E con l’appoggio soprattutto di mia madre che deve aver pregato tanto, ho deciso di diventare Saveriano. L'unica opposizione è venuta dal mio padrone che non voleva lasciarmi andare». «La mamma - scriverà il P. Maestro nella Presentazione di P. Michele alla Prima Professione - è di ottimi sentimenti cristiani».
Entrò all’Istituto di Vicenza il 16 agosto del 43. Ma, un mese dopo, a causa della guerra, gli allievi furono trasferiti a Grumone dove iniziarono l’iter formativo saveriano che P. Michele percorse regolarmente: Grumone (43-47) medie inferiori e ginnasio; S. Pietro in Vincoli (47-48) Noviziato e Prima Professione; Desio (48-51) Liceo; Massa Lucana (51-52) Prefettato; Piacenza (52-56) Teologia e ordinazione presbiterale(17.3.56).
Le valutazioni degli educatori sottolineano il fatto che nel periodo di formazione P. Michele ha saputo potenziare le sue migliori capacità: «Di animo assai buono, docile, generoso e accurato nella sua vita spirituale. … la sua bontà e il suo criterio e ingegno pratico integrano qualche limite scolastico» (Presentazione al Noviziato).
Fu destinato alla missione dell’Indonesia. Giunse nel paese asiatico nell’agosto del 1957. Nell’intervista del 2009 ricordava così i primi 10 anni dei 54 passati in Indonesia: «Oltre che il curato in Cattedrale, dovevo fare catechismo nelle scuole, dalle elementari fino all'accademia: erano 30 ore di religione settimanali. Al pomeriggio c'erano 12-13 gruppi della Legio Mariae, poi i registri, c'erano molti battesimi».
Dal 63 al 64 guidò la Parrocchia di Bukittinggi; dal 64 al 66 fu incaricato di Indragiri. Dopo un anno di aggiornamento in Italia e di tre di parroco a Bukittinggi, risiedette per 16 anni a Padang ricoprendo diversi incarichi: Parroco di Padang Baru e Rettore del Seminario (70-72); Cappellano della Cattedrale e Segretario del Vescovo (72-83); Presidente delegato delle scuole diocesane (per oltre 20 anni); Vicario Generale (81-05).
Nel 1986 lasciò Padang e si stabilì a Bukittinggi «perché il Vescovo, al quale avevo chiesto di essere sollevato da alcuni incarichi per stare in mezzo alla gente, mi nominò parroco di Bukittinggi, da solo. Così facevo servizio alcuni giorni in curia, poi a Bukittinggi e in altre parrocchie: ogni giorno cambiavo letto. Così fino al 2005 quando il vescovo nominò un nuovo Vicario Generale» (Intervista 2009). Da allora fino al 2012 P. Michele potè dedicarsi esclusivamente alle sue comunità cristiane di Bukittinggi, Payakumbuh e Padang Panjang.
P. Michele restò fedele ai valori indicati nell’Esame della Vocazione di V Ginnasio: «Sempre ebbi in me il desiderio di far del bene al prossimo, ai sofferenti, ai bisognosi (e di questo debbo ringraziare immensamente il Signore). Questo desiderio è andato sempre più crescendo coll’andare del tempo e con il passare degli anni e con l’entrata all’Istituto. … La consacrazione a Dio di tutto me stesso è stata sempre l’aspirazione più intima e più bella e lo scopo “promuovere la gloria di Dio e la salvezza delle anime nelle terre infedeli” è sempre stato il mio ideale. Non desidero di meglio e non chiedo al Signore che questa grande grazia.
Posso dire che la vita religiosa missionaria consiste in un continuo rinnegamento di se stessi, della propria volontà e in una donazione completa della propria vita per il prossimo».
Nella fedeltà a questi valori c’è il segreto dello stile di serenità e di ascolto di P. Michele.

Fr. Michele Galli died suddenly on 24 September 2012, in the hospital of Pekambaru (Indonesia), while awaiting cataract surgery. Born in Ranica (Bergamo, Italy), on 22 April 1928, he was 84 years old.
The mother of Fr. Michele, Felicita Testa, played an important role in his decision to become a missionary. She worked as a weaver and became a widow in 1936, at the age of 31, with four small children between the ages of one and eight years to look after. In an interview with the parish newsletter, during his last holiday in Italy in 2009, Fr. Michele said: «After primary school, I worked in a kiln in Ranica until I was 15 years old, so that I could contribute to the upkeep of my family. … Then I discovered my vocation … With the support of my mother, who must have prayed a great deal, I decided to become a Xaverian. The only opposition came from my employer who did not want to let me go». When he presented Fr. Michele to First Profession, the Novice Master commented: «His mother is a very Christian woman ».
He joined the Institute in Vicenza on 16 August 1943. Just one month later, the war forced the transfer of the students to Grumone, where they began the Xaverian formation program, which Fr. Michele duly completed: Grumone (1943-47) junior and senior high school; S. Pietro in Vincoli (1947-48) Novitiate and First Profession; Desio (1948-51) Lyceum; Massa Lucana (1951-52) Prefect; Piacenza (1952-56) Theology and ordination to the priesthood (17.3.56).
The formators’ reports emphasize the fact that, during the formation years, Fr. Michele developed his best talents: «He has a good heart and is docile, generous and diligent in his spiritual life. … his goodness, common sense and practical talents make up for some academic limits» (Presentation to Novitiate).
He was assigned to the mission of Indonesia and arrived there in August 1957. In the 2009 interview, he thus remembered the first 10 years of the 54 he lived in Indonesia: «As well as being the assistant priest in the Cathedral, I had 30 hours a week teaching catechism in the schools. In the afternoon I had 12-13 Legion of Mary groups, then the registers and there were many baptisms too ».
In the year 1963-64 he guided the Parish of Bukittinggi; from 1964 un til 1966 he was in charge of Indragiri. After a year of aggiornamento in Italy and three as parish priest at Bukittinggi, he resided for 16 years at Padang, where he carried out various tasks: Parish priest at Padang Baru and Rector of the Seminary (1970-72); Chaplain of the Cathedral and secretary to the Bishop (1972-83); delegate President of the diocesan schools (for more than 20 years); Vicar General (1981-2005).
He left Padang in 1986 and set up home in Bukittinggi «because the Bishop, whom I had asked to relieve me of some tasks so I could work among the people, appointed me parish priest of Bukittinggi, on my own. I therefore alternated some days in the Curia and some in Bukittinggi and other parishes: every day I slept in a different bed. This went on until 2005, when the bishop appointed a new Vicar General» (Interview 2009). From then until 2012, Fr. Michele dedicated himself exclusively to his Christian communities in Bukittinggi, Payakumbuh and Padang Panjang.
Fr. Michele remained faithful to the values indicated in the Esame della Vocazione he learned in high school: «I was always motivated by the desire to do good to my neighbor, the suffering and the needy (and I am immensely grateful to the Lord for this). This desire continued to grow as time passed and when I joined the Institute. … The consecration of my entire life to God has always been my greatest and most intimate aspiration and “the promotion of God’s glory and the salvation of souls” has always been my ideal. I desire nothing more and this is the only grace I ask of God. I can say that the religious missionary life consists in a constant denial of self and the complete offering of self for one’s neighbor».
The secret of Fr. Michele’s life lies in his fidelity to these val ues.
