P. Vittorino Ghirardi

Salò (Brescia) 2 agosto 1931
Bujumbura  (Burundi) 17 luglio 1994

Fr. Vittorino Ghirardi

Salò (Brescia) 2 agosto 1931
Bujumbura  (Burundi) 17 luglio 1994

Fr. Victor Ghirardi died of a heart attack during the celebration of the Mass at the Youth Center of Kamenge (Burundi) on July 17 1994. He was two weeks short of his 63rd birthday, born at Salò (Brescia) on Aug. 2 1931.

Fr. Victor entered the Xaverians at Vicenza in 1946, professed Religious Vows at S. Pietro in Vincoli on Sept. 12 1951, and was ordained a priest in Parma on Nov. 9 1958.

His first assignment was Director of "Missionari Saveriani," the monthly newsletter of the Italian province (1959-61), followed by six years of missionary animation at the community of Desio and surrounding parish communities. He wrote to the Superior General from Desio: “We gathered some youth together and we started the group ‘Parate viam Domini.’ Now, they are about 70 qualified and chosen young adults. They started working right away on the general census of all the families in the area: 520 of them. From that census, we had a list of children for CCD classes, youth, sick, poor and unemployed. The group distinguished itself for the perfect organization of catechetical classes in various neighborhoods, their up-to-date liturgies, their choir, and their printing. The month of May was exceptional indeed, truly missionary. They gathered youth and adults everywhere for a liturgical service, and these places were named Centers of Prayer… At the end of the month we took them by bus to Milan for Confirmation of adults with their sponsors. Even the newspapers wrote about us, and the Bishop holds us in his heart.” (1964)

In 1967, he was assigned to Congo, and arrived at Bukavu on Jan. 6 1967. He worked at Fizi, an area of periodical conflicts between rebels groups and government troops. But even in this situation, which saw the killing of three Xaverians in 1964, Fr. Victor reached out to lepers, far-away villages, and tribes who did not know the Gospel. He worked with Fr. Cima, and they both wished to transfer the bodies of the martyrs to the church, and they did that on June 24 1968. They placed them where Fr. Didonè had wished to be buried, if he had died in Congo.

Fr. Victor started his work as a pastor in Fizi by visiting the various communities, amidst the many difficulties, but he paid the price. His ever-present diabetes (since his student days) acted up, and had to return to Italy in the fall of 1970. He was back to Fizi at the beginning of January 1971, against his doctor’s wishes. The Christian communities grew from the original 29 to 85 in 1975. He started visiting the Leper Village of Buzimba in 1968, which gave origin to his famous " Letter of Lazarus" published in many mission magazines.

He was back to the CSAM in 1977, where he worked for 4 years in Mass Media, developing audios and videos, and conducting schools of prayer. He wrote at that time: "Since I lack the human touch, I'm afraid that my life will see its end too soon,... I ever sought the light of the Star in the eyes of my brothers and sisters."

He was reassigned to Zaire in 1981 because of his nostalgia “of sun, of Lake Tanganika, of walking with people, of spending the evenings in the villages under the stars with their dances, sacraments, Bible and songs.” (Letter of Dec. 3 1980). But after two years, he is back to Italy for health reasons, and becomes the rector of Alzano Lombardo until 1988.

“Without a doubt, considering the circumstances he was working, Fr. Victor proved himself with his great creativity, enthusiasm, ability to adapt, courage, and joy.” (Fr. E. Marangoni)

His final assignment was in Burundi, at Kamenge’s Youth Center, till his last Eucharist with the young people, "sharing words of hope even in the midst of hopelessness, believing that justice will triumph over injustices, that the joy, light, love and peace of the Reign of God will become realities in our world." (Christmas Letter 1993) May he rest in Peace.

Père Vittorino Ghirardi

Né à Salo (Brescia – Italie) le 02.08.1931
Décédé à Bujumbura (Burundi) le 17.07.1994
62 ans.
