P. Pietro Grappoli

Alle ore 21,30 del 5.8.2008, all’ospedale Yos Sudarso di Padang (Indonesia), dove era ricoverato da una decina di giorni, è morto P. Pietro Grappoli per un cedimento del cuore. Da due mesi non si riusciva più a comunicare direttamente con lui a causa della totale sordità e cecità, conseguenze di un grave incidente occorsogli nel 1992 a Duri (Riau).
Aveva 82 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Esine (Brescia - Italia) il 7.6.1926.
P. Pietro iniziò il suo iter saveriano nel 1938 a Vicenza (ginnasio inferiore). Lo proseguì a Grumone (ginnasio superiore). Nel 1944 fu a S. Pietro in Vincoli per l’anno di noviziato: emise la Prima Professione il 12.9.1945 a Parma. Fece i primi due anni di Liceo a Parma e il terzo a Desio nella villa Tittoni, da poco acquistata dai Saveriani. Dopo il prefettato a Udine, frequentò i quattro anni di teologia a Piacenza dove fu ordinato presbitero il 21.3.1953. «Si è preparato al sacerdozio con intensa attività spirituale. – si legge nel giudizio del suo Rettore (15.2.53) – Facile a stringere relazioni e amicizie… Di una precisione raffinata e animato di sincero zelo. Di grande docilità»
Dopo l’ordinazione lavorò per otto anni in Italia: Desio, Piacenza, e insegnante (55-61) a Zelarino. Alla fine del 1959 ricevette la destinazione all’Indonesia. Così rispose al Superiore Generale: «Laetatus sum in his quae dicta sunt mihi! Superabundo gaudio! Grazie, Padre!» (13.8.59).
Giunse a Padang nel febbraio 61. Il suo fu un inizio in salita, per la morte del padre e per una preoccupante emorragia, causata da un’ulcera che periodicamente si faceva sentire. Appresa la lingua, fu inviato alle Mentawai, a Sikakap: una missione che era un cantiere aperto perché si stavano realizzando le strutture essenziali per la vita delle comunità cristiane: chiese, scuole, dispensari. P. Pietro si impegnò soprattutto a «istruire i cristiani, dato che l’espansione è avvenuta in fretta e non di pari passo con l’istruzione. Sto facendo del mio meglio con delle traduzioni, sto dandomi d’attorno per l’istruzione catechistica dei bambini» (25.6.63).
Dal 1965 al 1970 fu impegnato a Padang: Vicario Generale della Diocesi, Rettore del Seminario e collaboratore pastorale a Padang Baru.
Nel 1970 fu nominato parroco di S. Maria di Fatima di Jakarta-Toasebio. Ma dopo due anni chiese di ritornare alle Mentawai: «A Jakarta non sono stato mai bene: il clima e il lavoro in una grande città non mi si confanno assolutamente». In quella circostanza comunicò al Superiore Generale che stava pensando seriamente di ritirarsi nella trappa di Rawa Seneng (Ddjateng): «per continuare nella mia vocazione missionaria attraverso l’apostolato indiretto» (23.5.72). Trascorse due brevi periodi in quella trappa, e il discernimento, che si concluse qualche anno più tardi, lo portò a ribadire l’impegno a vivere «i valori eterni immutabili dell’apostolato, del ‘facere sequitur esse’! Li ricordo a me, perché ogni giorno a Sipora, la ‘Trappa’ naturale delle Mentawai, li medito e ne faccio la ‘causa’ di una gioia profonda e serena» (15.5.79).
Ritornò alle Mentawai per altri 14 anni (1972-1986). Lavorò a Sikakap, Siberut, Sipora e ancora Sikakap; con le visite ai villaggi, le iniziative per lo sviluppo integrale delle persone e, soprattutto, le catechesi per la formazione cristiana.
Nel 1986 lasciò definitivamente quel campo di lavoro. Risiedette a Padang (86-89) dove curò la pubblicazione dei Vangeli in mentawaiano. Fu quindi parroco di Duri (Sumatra-Riau) fino al grave incidente stradale del 1992 dal quale uscì duramente segnato, ma anche corroborato nella fede:
«A Duri – scrisse nel 2003 e 2005– il Signore e la Madonna mi hanno dato un grazia grande, non una disgrazia! per amare i poveri, i sofferenti, Gesù e la Sua Mamma Maria! … Mi ha fatto capire che una sola cosa è necessaria, la preghiera. In silenzio e in preghiera sto accanto ai missionari che lavorano nella vigna del Signore… fino a quando spunterà per me la luce dell’eternità».
Il Signore lo accolga nel suo regno di luce e di pace.

Fr. Pietro Grappoli died at the Yos Sudarso Hospital of Padang (Indonesia), on August 5 2008. He had been admitted to hospital ten days previously suffering from heart failure. During the last two months of his life, communication with him was impossible because of his total blindness and deafness, the consequences of a serious accident he suffered in 1992 at Duri (Riau).
Born at Esine (Brescia - Italy), on June 7 1926, he was 82 years old.
Fr. Pietro joined the Xaverians in 1938 at Vicenza (junior high school) and continued his studies at Grumone (senior high school). In 1944 he went to S. Pietro in Vincoli for the Novitiate and made his First Profession on Sept. 12 1945 at Parma. He completed the first two years of Liceo at Parma and the third year at Desio in the “Villa Tittoni”, which the Xaverians had recently purchased. After serving as prefect in Udine, he studied theology for four years in Piacenza, where he was ordained priest on March 21 1953. The Rector wrote in his report: «He has prepared for the priesthood with an intense spiritual activity. He makes friends easily. He is very precise and animated by a sincere zeal. He is very meek» (Feb. 15 1953).
After his ordination he worked for eight years in Italy, at Desio and Piacenza and he also taught (1955-61) at Zelarino. At the end of 1959 he was assigned to Indonesia. He thus replied to the Superior General: «Laetatus sum in his quae dicta sunt mihi! Superabundo gaudio! Thank you, Padre!» (March 13 1959).
He arrived in Padang in February 1961. His was an uphill start because of the death of his father and for a worrying hemorrhage, which was caused by an ulcer that every so often gave him problems. After learning the language he was sent to the Mentawai, to Sikakap: this mission was in the process of building the essential structures for the life of the Christian communities: churches, schools and dispensaries. Fr. Pietro dedicated himself above all « to the instruction of the Christians, since the expansion happened quickly and was out of step with instruction. I am doing the best I can with translations and striving to provide the children with catechetical instruction» (June 25 1963).
From 1965 until 1970 he was in Padang, where he served as Vicar General of the Diocese, Rector of the Seminary and pastoral collaborator in Padang Baru. In 1970 he was appointed parish priest of St. Mary of Fatima at Jakarta-Toasebio. However, after two years, he asked to return to the Mentawai: «I never settled down in Jakarta: the climate and the work in a large city definitely do not suit me ». On that occasion he informed the Superior General that he was thinking seriously of retiring to the Trappist monastery in Rawa Seneng (Jateng): «to continue with my missionary vocation through the indirect apostolate » (May 23 1972). He spent two brief periods in that monastery, and the discernment, which ended some years later, led him to reassert the commitment to live «the eternal immutable values of the apostolate, ‘facere sequitur esse’! I remind myself of these things, because every day at Sipora, the natural ‘Monastery’of the Mentawai, I meditate upon them and make them the “cause” of a profound and serene joy» (May 15 1979).
He returned to the Mentawai for another 14 years (1972-1986). He worked at Sikakap, Siberut, Sipora and once again at Sikakap, visiting the villages, setting up initiatives for the integral development of persons and catechesis for Christian formation.
In 1986 he left that field of work for good. He resided in Padang (1986-89) where he worked on the publication of the Gospels in the language of the Mentawai. He then served as parish priest at Duri (Sumatera-Riau) until the serious road accident in 1992 which deeply affected him, though it also strengthened his faith: In 2003 and 2005 he wrote: «At Duri, the Lord and Our Lady gave me a great grace! To love the poor and the suffering! … He made me understand that one thing alone, prayer, is necessary. In silence and prayer I accompany the missionaries who are working in the Lord’s vineyard…until the day of eternity dawns for me».
