1941 - 2025

Sabato 12 luglio 2025, alle ore 19.00, nella Casa Madre di Parma, Italia, dopo lunga malattia è deceduto il nostro confratello p. Alberto Damiano Lanaro. P. Alberto aveva 84 anni compiuti essendo nato il 02 marzo 1941, a Santorso, Vicenza, Italia.

Dopo le scuole elementari, Alberto frequenta le Scuole Commerciali serali a Vicenza dal 1955 al 1958. Dal 1958 al 1963 studia ed ottiene il Diploma di “Perito Elettrotecnico” presso l’Istituto Industriale Statale “A. Rossi” a Vicenza.

Alberto sente la chiamata alla vocazione missionaria in occasione degli Esercizi Spirituali predicati da un missionario. Il suo Direttore Spirituale, il gesuita p. Sergio Rendina, maestro dei Novizi a Lonigo, Vicenza, nonostante il desiderio di Alberto di entrare dai Gesuiti, lo consiglia - a motivo dell’avanzata età - di fare domanda di entrare nell’Istituto dei Missionari Saveriani di Vicenza, dato che il giovane Alberto già conosceva la congregazione per la presenza di suo fratello p. Piergiorgio Lanaro entrato nella Casa Apostolica di Vicenza nel 1945.

Il 14 ottobre 1963, all’età di 22 anni, il giovane Alberto entra nella Casa Saveriana di Desio dove frequenta un corso speciale di Latino e Filosofia. Nel 1964 va a Nizza Monferrato per vivere l’anno di noviziato alla fine del quale emette la prima Professione Religiosa e Missionaria (Parma, 03 ottobre 1965).

Dopo un anno, trascorso a Tavernerio per completare gli studi liceali (1964-1965), Alberto va a Parma per la formazione teologica (1966-1970). Qui emette la Professione Perpetua il 12.09.1969. Viene ordinato presbitero nella Cattedrale di Vicenza il 12 ottobre 1969.

Dopo l’Ordinazione presbiterale p. Alberto viene destinato al Burundi, trascorrendo prima un anno di studio della lingua francese a Parigi (1970-1971).

Dal 1971 al 1979 appartiene alla Circoscrizione del Burundi: studio della lingua locale a Bujumbura (1971-1972), viceparroco nella parrocchia di Kigwena (Bururi) dal 1972 al 1978; rettore della comunità Saveriana di Rumonge (1979).

In seguito alla sua espulsione dal Burundi (01.06.1979), p. Alberto rientra in Italia. Qui, dopo qualche mese di “attesa”, viene destinato alla Casa Apostolica di Cremona dove presta il suo servizio come economo, vicerettore e animatore missionario (1980-1985).

Dopo un anno di aggiornamento a Brugge, Belgio (1986-1987), p. Alberto viene destinato allo Zaire: viceparroco a Mwenga (1987-1988), studio della lingua Swahili a Goma (1988-1989); coadiutore a Shabunda (1990-1991); viceparroco a Kigulube (1991-1995).

Nel 1995 p. Alberto ritorna in Burundi: viceparroco a Buyengero (1995-1999) e, poi, viceparroco a Gisanze (1999-2005). In questo periodo trascorre qualche mese di aggiornamento a Gerusalemme (2001). Dal 2005 al 2006 è viceparroco a Gasura.

Rientrato in Italia per vacanze, p. Alberto partecipa ai Tre Mesi a Tavernerio (2006) ed – in attesa di destinazione – vive un corto periodo nella Casa di Vicenza (2007), impegnato nell’Animazione Missionaria. Dal 2007 al 2014 viene destinato alla Delegazione Centrale, propriamente alla “Procura delle Missioni”, Parma, per svolgere il servizio di Direttore della Procura.

Dal 2014 al 2019 p. Alberto appartiene alla Regione dell’Italia: economo della Casa Madre (2014-2016); economo della Casa di Vicenza (2016-2019).

Nel 2019 ritorna alla Delegazione Centrale, impegnato nuovamente nella “Procura delle Missioni”, Parma.

Nel 2020 p. Alberto passa definitivamente alla Regione italiana. A Parma, Casa Madre, cura il servizio della documentazione dei confratelli (Tessera Sanitaria, Passaporto, Carta d’Identità, A.I.R.E…) fino ai primi sintomi della grave malattia.  

«Lo scopo di questa mia domanda è quello di poter coronare un desiderio che porto in me da molti anni, e cioè di recarmi nelle missioni e precisamente nel Burundi, per stare con coloro che forse hanno bisogno di me. So che vi sono sacrifici in questo servizio, ma d’altronde mi sembra di aver constatato che questa è la mia strada per raggiungere la felicità. Ringrazio ancora tutti coloro che mi hanno aiutato per raggiungere questa meta, specialmente i miei genitori, e affidandomi nelle mani di Dio, voglia accettare, padre, questa mia domanda…» (Dalla domanda al Presbiterato, Parma 16 aprile 1969).

«…il servizio che mi hai chiesto è ancora pesante, ma con l’aiuto di Fr. Gaetano Raumer spero diventerà più accettabile. Esso mi dà la possibilità di ammirare lo spirito di sacrificio di tanti confratelli e tante occasioni di bene che non sempre sfrutto adeguatamente… P. Renzo Larcher ha cercato il rinnovamento spirituale, come abbiamo letto nel Calendario Saveriano questa mattina. Ammiro la sua costanza nel migliorare la preghiera liturgica tra noi e nel Santuario. Ammirevole… Poter vivere in piccoli gruppi, non scelti dagli interessi, ma dalla Provvidenza, aiuta a vivere il carisma proprio dei Saveriani: ‘fare famiglia’…»  (Da una lettera al p. Sabato 12 luglio 2025, p. Alberto termina il suo pellegrinaggio terreno e viene ammesso a contemplare la Gloria dell’Altissimo.

Fr. Alberto Damiano Lanaro

1941 - 2025

On Saturday, July 12^th, 2025, at 7:00 p.m., after a long illness, our 84-year-old confrere Fr. Aberto Damiano Lanaro passed away at the Mother House in Parma, Italy. He was born on March 2^nd, 1941, in Santorso, Vicenza, Italy.

After elementary school, from 1955 to 1958, Alberto attended the night school at the Scuole Commerciali Serali in Vicenza. From 1958 to 1963, he pursued and gained a Diploma of “Qualified Electrical Technician” (perito elettrotecnico) from the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale “A. Rossi” in Vicenza.

Alberto felt the call to missionary life during the Spiritual Exercises preached by a missionary. His Spiritual Master, the Jesuit Fr. Sergio Rendina, who was Master of Novices in Lonigo, Vicenza, despite Alberto’s desire to join the Jesuits, in consideration of his age, advised him to enter the Institute of the Xaverian Missionaries in Vicenza. Young Alberto already knew them, because his brother, Fr. Piergiorgio Lanaro, had entered the Casa Apostolica (Xaverian minor seminary) in Vicenza in 1945.

On October 14^th, 1963, at the age of 22, young Alberto entered the Xaverian house in Desio, where he attended a special course of Latin and Philosophy. In 1964, he moved to Nizza Monferrato for the year of Novitiate, at whose conclusion he made his first religious and missionary profession (Parma, October 3^rd, 1965).

He spent one year in Tavernerio to complete his high school (liceo) studies (1964-1965), then went to Parma for his theological training (1966-1970). In Parma, Alberto made his perpetual profession on September 12^th, 1969. He was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Vicenza, on October 12^th, 1969.

After his ordination, Fr. Alberto was assigned to Burundi. He spent one year studying French in Paris (1970-1971). From 1971 to 1979, he belonged to the Circumscription of Burundi and performed the following tasks: study of the local language in Bujumbura (1971-1972); assistant pastor of the parish in Kigwena, Bururi (1972-1978); rector of the Xaverian community in Rumonge (1979).

Following his expulsion from Burundi (June 1^st, 1979), Fr. Alberto returned to Italy. He waited for few months, then was assigned to the Casa Apostolica in Cremona where he carried out the tasks of bursar, vice-rector and mission awareness promoter (1980-1985).

After one sabbatical of studies in Brugge, Belgium (1986-1987), Fr. Alberto was assigned to Zaire as: vice-pastor in Mwenga (1987-1988); study of the Swahili language in Goma (1988-1989); coadjutor in Shabunda (1990-1991); vice-pastor in Kigulube (1991-1995).

In 1995, Fr. Alberto returned to Burundi, first as vice-pastor in Buyengero (1995-1999), then as vice-pastor in Gisanze (1999-2005). In that period, he spent few months of aggiornamento in Jerusalem (2001). From 2005 to 2006, he was vice-pastor in Gasura.

Upon returning to Italy for vacation, Fr. Alberto took part in the Three Months ongoing formation programme in Tavernerio (2006). While awaiting for an assignment, he stayed for a short time at the Xaverian house in Vicenza (2007), carrying out mission awareness work. From 2007 to 2014, he belonged to the Central Delegation, specifically to the Procura delle Missioni in Parma, to work as director of the Procura.

From 2014 to 2019, Fr. Alberto belonged to the Region of Italy – bursar of the Mother House (2014-2016); bursar of the house in Vicenza (2016-2019).

In 2019, he returned under the jurisdiction of the Central Delegation, once again involved in the Procura delle Missioni in Parma.

In 2020, Fr. Alberto became definitively part of the Region of Italy. In Parma, Mother House, he was in charge of following the confreres’ personal documents (their social security cards, passports, IDs, AIRE registration at consular offices, etc.), till the first symptoms of a grave disease appeared.

«The purpose of my application is to be able to fulfil a wish that I have carried within me for many years, namely to go to the missions, specifically to Burundi, to be with those who perhaps need me. I know there are sacrifices to make in this service, but on the other hand I feel that this is my path to happiness. I thank again all those who have helped me reach this goal, especially my parents. «It is still hard for me to carry out the type of service you asked of me but, with the help of Br. Gaetano Raumer, I hope it will become easier. This service is giving me the chance to admire the spirit of sacrifice of many confreres and notice the many opportunities for good deeds which I don’t grab always properly. … Fr. Renzo Larcher is looking for a spiritual renewal, the one we read about this morning in Calendario Saveriano. I admire his persistence in improving our liturgical prayer and the prayer in the Shrine. Commendable… Being able to live in small groups, not created on the basis of common interests, but selected by Providence, helps live the typical charism of the Xaverians: ‘family making’…» (From a letter to Fr. On Saturday, July 12^th, 2025, Fr. Alberto reached the end of his earthly pilgrimage a was admitted to contemplate the glory of the Most High.
