1937 - 2024

Lunedì 06 maggio 2024, intorno alle ore 15.30, è deceduto presso l’Ospedale Businco di Cagliari, Sardegna – Italia, il nostro confratello P. Giuseppe Ibba. Aveva 86 anni compiuti essendo nato il 10 ottobre 1937 a Sardara, Sardegna, Italia.

Dopo le scuole elementari a Sardara (1943-1949), l’11 novembre 1949 il giovane Giuseppe entra in Istituto a Tortolì (provincia di Nuoro), prima casa dei Saveriani in Sardegna. In seguito al passaggio della scuola apostolica da Tortolì a Macomer, Giuseppe conclude gli studi delle scuole medie a Macomer. Dal 1952 al 1953 è a Nizza Monferrato per gli studi ginnasiali. Dal 1953 al 1955 continua gli studi di Ginnasio a Zelarino, Mestre, Venezia. 

Dopo l’anno di Noviziato, emette la professione religiosa e missionaria a San Pietro in Vincoli il 12 settembre 1956. Segue la formazione liceale a Desio (1956-1959). Prima di giungere a Parma per lo studio della Teologia (1961 al 1965), Giuseppe svolge il servizio di Prefettato per quasi due anni nella scuola apostolica di Macomer, Sardegna. A Parma, il 12 settembre 1962 emette la Professione Perpetua e il 25 ottobre 1964 riceve l’ordinazione presbiterale. 

Per un anno viene destinato alla comunità di Brescia come “propagandista”, impegnato cioè nella promozione vocazionale (1965-1966). Dal 1966 in avanti inizia quello che sarà il suo servizio principale come missionario: l’economia. Dal 1966 al 1968 è economo a Macomer; dal 1968 al 1972 è contemporaneamente economo di Cagliari (dove risiede) e di Macomer. 

Nel 1972 viene destinato al Congo. Dopo l’anno di lingua a Parigi, dal 1973 al 1978 è a Bukavu, nella Casa Regionale, come Segretario Amministrativo, prima, e Direttore Finanze, poi, dell’I.S.P. (Institut Supérieur Pédagogique di Bukavu). Dal 1974 al 1977 è anche Economo Regionale. Dopo aver dedicato un tempo allo studio della lingua Kiswahili (1978-1979), va a Mwenga come economo. Dal 1980 al 1989 è nuovamente a Bukavu come Economo Regionale. Nello stesso periodo è anche rettore della casa Regionale a Bukavu. Serve anche come vice superiore regionale (1982-1983) e consigliere regionale (1986-1989).

Dopo un anno di aggiornamento a Roma, Collegio Internazionale Conforti (1989-1990), viene destinato alla Delegazione Centrale (1990-1996). In questo periodo è Economo della Direzione Generale (1990-1994) e Rettore della casa generalizia. Durante questo sessennio è anche Consigliere della Direzione della Delegazione Centrale. Per due anni (1992-1994) è anche membro del “Comitato per gli interventi caritativi a favore del terzo mondo” della C.E.I: (Conferenza Episcopale Italiana).

Dopo un anno di aggiornamento a Parigi (1994-1995), è richiamato a Roma per l’organizzazione della Beatificazione del Fondatore. 

Nel 1996 riceve la destinazione per il Camerun dove vi rimane fino al 1999. Qui lavora come viceparroco a Douala-Oyack (1996-1999) e come economo regionale (1997-1999). 

Nel 1999 viene richiamato nuovamente alla Delegazione Centrale per il servizio di Rettore della comunità di Parigi (1999-2013). Dal 2002 al 2011 è anche vice superiore della Delegazione Centrale. Nel 2014 viene destinato alla Regione italiana. Dal 2014, P. Giuseppe si trovava a Cagliari dove svolgeva il compito di economo ed era impegnato nella pastorale.

Il 6 maggio 2024, P. Giuseppe saliva in cielo per ricevere la ricompensa del servo buono e fedele, e prendere parte alla gioia del Cristo Risorto.

Sto vivendo questo anniversario nell’intimità della mia solitudine e ferialità… Non ho voluto feste per tentare di celebrare con sincerità, nel profondo di me stesso la SUA FEDELTÀ non certo la mia…

A mani vuote mi ero presentato all’Ordinazione Presbiterale ma allo stesso tempo con tanta freschezza da PRIMO AMORE. A mani vuote ed un senso di stanchezza e fallimento mi ritrovo a celebrare il XXV anniversario. Ho cercato di assumere questa sensazione ed è ciò che ho portato all’altare come DONO. Mi ha dato tanta pace! La Provvidenza mi ha condotto in questi anni a dare un servizio che non era certo nei miei sogni di giovane missionario. Ho tentato di uscirne spesso, ma mi sono ritrovato sempre dentro! Non rimpiango nulla, perché credo veramente che tutto è GRAZIA. Spero proprio che quest’anno di revisione e “rigenerazione” sia per me un’esperienza nuova di intimità con CRISTO che mi riapra ai fratelli nella mia vocazione missionaria. Che possa vivere questo nuovo capitolo della mia vita nella disponibilità e nella fiducia all’AMORE di DIO…» (da una lettera di risposta al Superiore Generale P. «…13 anni trascorsi in mezzo a noi, anni in cui (P. Giuseppe Ibba, ndr) ha accolto più di 100 giovani missionari, studenti, nella comunità di 4 Rue de Beauté. Soggiornano qui per prepararsi alla missione e anche per imparare la lingua francese. La maggior parte di loro lavora nelle missioni saveriane dell’Africa francofona per annunciare e testimoniare il Vangelo del Signore. Fr. Giuseppe Ibba

1937 - 2024

On Monday, May 6^th, 2024, around 3:30 p.m., our 86-year-old confrere Fr. Giuseppe Ibba passed away at Businco Hospital in Cagliari, Sardinia – Italy.

He was born on October 10^th, 1937, in Sardara, Sardinia. 

Upon graduating from primary school in Sardara (1943-1949), on November 11^th, 1949, young Giuseppe entered our Institute in Tortolì (Nuoro), where the first Xaverian house in Sardinia was located. Following the relocation of the minor seminary (scuola apostolica) from Tortolì to Macomer, Giuseppe would conclude his middle school studies in Macomer. From 1952 to 1952, he was in Nizza Monferrato to attend junior high school (ginnasio), which from 1953 to 1955 he would continue attending in Zelarino, Mestre-Venice.

At the completion of the year of Novitiate, he made his religious and missionary profession in San Pietro in Vincoli, on September 12^th, 1956. He then attended senior high school (liceo) in Desio (1956-1959). Before reaching Parma for the study of theology (1961-1965), Giuseppe spent almost two years serving as prefect of student (prefettato) in the minor seminary (scuola apostolica) in Macomer, Sardinia. On September 12^th, 1962, in Parma, he made his perpetual profession and, on October 25^th, 1964, was ordained a priest. 

He was assigned for one year to Brescia as “propagandist”, that is, working in vocation promotion (1965-1966). From 1966 on, he began what would be his main service as a missionary: economy. From 1966 to 1968, he was treasurer in Macomer; from 1968 to 1972, he was concurrently treasurer for Cagliari (where he resided) and Macomer.

In 1972, he was assigned to Congo. After a year of language studies in Paris, from 1973 to 1978 he was in Bukavu, in the Regional House, first as Administrative Secretary, then as Financial Director of I.S.P. (Institut Supérieur Pédagogique, Bukavu). From 1974 to 1977, he was also Regional Treasurer. After having dedicated some time to the study of the Kiswahili language (1978-1979), he moved to Mwenga as treasurer. From 1980 to 1989, he was again in Bukavu as Regional Treasurer. In that same period he was also rector of the Regional House in Bukavu, and served as Vice-Regional Superior (1982-1983) and Regional Councillor (1986-1989). 

After a sabbatical at the Conforti International College in Rome (1989-1990), he was assigned to the Central Delegation (1990-1996). In that period he was treasurer of the General Direction (1990-1994) and rector of the General House. During those six years, he served also as Councillor of the Central Delegation Direction, and for two years (1992-1994) he was a member of the “Committee for Charitable Interventions on behalf of the Third World” of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI).

After a sabbatical year in Paris (1994-1995), he was called back to Rome to help organise for the Beatification of the Founder. In 1996, he was assigned to Cameroon where he would remain until 1999. In Cameroon, he worked as assistant-pastor of Douala-Oyack (1996-1999) and as regional treasurer (1997-1999). 

In 1999, he was once again called back to the Central Delegation for the task of rector of the Community in Paris (1999-2013). From 2002 to 2011, he was also vice-superior of the Central Delegation. In 2014, he was assigned to the Italian Region. Since 2014, Fr. Giuseppe was in Cagliari where he carried out the task of treasurer, while working also in pastoral ministry. 

On May 6^th, 2024, Fr. Giuseppe went up to Heaven to receive the reward of the good and faithful servant and thus partake in the joy of the Risen Christ.

«...Thank you for your wishes of JOY and PEACE on the occasion of my XXV anniversary of Priesthood. These are GIFTS that I am asking for every day! I am living this anniversary alone, in the intimacy of my daily life... I did not want parties so that I could celebrate with sincerity, deep within myself, HIS FAITHFULNESS, certainly not mine...

Empty handed, but with the freshness of FIRST-LOVE, I presented myself at the Ordination to the priesthood; still empty handed and with a sense of weariness and failure, I find myself celebrating the XXV anniversary. I tried to accept this feeling and this is what I brought to the altar as a GIFT. It gave me so much peace! Over these years, Providence has led me to forms of service that were certainly not in my dreams as a young missionary. I often tried to avoid them, but I always found myself accepting them after all! I have no regrets, because I truly believe that everything is GRACE. I really hope that this year of revision and “regeneration” may be for me a new experience of intimacy with CHRIST that will reopen me to my brothers and sisters in my missionary vocation. May I live this new chapter of my life in openness and trust in GOD'S LOVE...» (from a letter of reply to the General Superior, Fr. «… 13 years spent among us, years during which [Fr. Giuseppe Ibba – ed.] welcomed more than 100 young missionaries and students, in the community at 4 Rue de Beauté. These come here to get ready for the mission and learn the French language. The majority of them works in the Xaverian missions of Francophone Africa to proclaim and give witness to the Gospel of the Lord.
