(1930 - 2022)

Martedì, 21 giugno 2022, alle ore 9.10 am, è deceduto per arresto cardiaco presso la Casa Madre (4° piano) di Parma il nostro confratello p. Michele D’Erchie. Aveva 91 anni compiuti, essendo nato l’11.11.1930 a Montemesola, Taranto. 

Dopo le scuole elementari, il giovane Michele frequenta le scuole medie inferiore e superiori presso il Seminario Arcivescovile di Taranto (1941-1946). Nel 1946 entra nella casa saveriana di San Pietro in Vincoli per vivere l’anno di Noviziato.

Dopo la prima professione religiosa e missionaria (emessa a S. Pietro in Vincoli il 25.10.1947), il giovane Michele continua con il consueto iter scolastico-formativo: liceo a Desio (1947-1950), prefettato a Vicenza (1950-1952), teologia a Piacenza (1952-1956).

Viene ordinato Presbitero a Piacenza il 04.06.1955.

Finiti gli studi teologici, p. Michele viene destinato all’Italia: cappellano della parrocchia del Tempio del Sacro Cuore a Parma (1956-1958), rettore della casa saveriana di Alzano Lombardo (1958-1964).

Nel 1964 p. Michele parte per il Burundi. Qui, dopo qualche mese di studio della lingua Kirundi a Bururi, lavora a Murago come vicario parrocchiale e incaricato del dispensario (1965-1969). Dal 1969 al 1974 è superiore regionale della Regione Saveriana del Centro Africa (Burundi e Zaire). In questo periodo è delegato al IX Capitolo Generale (1971).

Dopo un anno di studio del francese a Parigi (1974-1975), p. Michele va a Roma (Collegio di via Tardini) per lo studio di specializzazione in Teologia Morale presso la Accademia Alfonsiana (1975-1977). In seguito ritorna in Burundi, dove è parroco di Kigwena, fino al giorno dell’espulsione (20.11.1981). In questo periodo è anche delegato al X Capitolo Generale (1977).

Dopo qualche mese di attesa in Italia, nel 1982 p. Michele viene destinato alla nuova missione del Camerun Ciad come superiore Delegato prima (1982-1988), e poi come Superiore Regionale (1988-1991). È delegato al XI Capitolo Generale (1983) e al XII Capitolo Generale (1989). Finito il suo mandato come superiore regionale, lavora come cappellano a Bafoussan-Koptchou (1991-1992).

Nel 1992 p. Michele viene destinato alla Delegazione Centrale, più precisamente alla casa di Tavernerio: rettore della comunità (1992-1998), Direttore dei Corsi di Formazione (1992-2000), dei Tre Mesi, delle 4 Settimane di Spiritualità Saveriana. È delegato anche al XIII Capitolo Generale (1995).

Nel 2000 p. Michele viene destinato alla Regione Italiana: animatore missionario, sostituto del Rettore e ministero a Salerno (2000-2005); ministero e animatore missionario a Taranto (2005-2021). Nel giugno del 2021 si trasferisce, per cure, nella comunità della Casa Madre- Quarto Piano.

“…dopo aver conosciuto bene lo spirito missionario e religioso del Saveriano, sento ora tutta l’ardente brama di immolare la mia giovinezza; l’intera mia vita per l’Avvento del Regno di Cristo tra i non Cristiani…L’ideale religioso-missionario, anche se è intessuto con le più dolorose rinunzie e sacrifici, è troppo bello e sublime per essere degno di poterlo seguire; ma diffidando complementarmente di me stesso e abbandonandomi con fiducia nella Divina Misericordia, credo di raggiungere la meta e di diventare uno strumento utile nelle mani dei miei superiori per la maggiore gloria di Dio e la salvezza delle anime…” (Domanda alla Prima Professione, San Pietro in Vincoli, 11 settembre 1947).  

“…non avevo pensato di raggiungere questa meta per gli acciacchi che si sono accumulati in questi ultimi anni. Alla fine della vita, non sono le poche luci che ho potuto accendere durante il mio cammino, per pura grazia del Signore, a darmi conforto; ma sono le ombre a pesarmi, perché riconosco di non essere stato sempre coerente con la mia grande e bella vocazione missionaria. Non vivrò nello sconforto, perché ho fiducia totale nell’infinito Amore misericordioso del Signore. Il resoconto più profondo della mia vita lo desidero fare cuore a cuore con il Signore Gesù…” (Lettera a p. Luigi Menegazzo, in occasione del 60° anniversario di Sacerdozio, Taranto, 29 maggio 2015).

Il 21 giugno 2022, p. Michele sale in Cielo dove finalmente può intrattenersi “cuore a cuore con il Signore Gesù”.

Fr. Michele D’Erchie

(1930 - 2022)

On Tuesday, June 21^st, 2022, at 9:10 a.m., our 91-year old confrere Fr. Michele D’Erchie passed away from heart failure in the Mother House (Fourth Floor) of Parma. He was born on November 11^th, 1930, in Montemesola, Taranto (Italy).

After elementary school, young Michele attended middle and high school at the Archiepiscopal Seminary of Taranto (1941-1946). In 1946, he entered the Xaverian house of San Pietro in Vincoli for the year of Novitiate.

After his first missionary religious profession (San Pietro in Vincoli, October 10^th, 1947), young Michele underwent the then standard curriculum: college studies in Desio (1947-1950), prefect of students in Vicenza (1950-1952), and theological studies in Piacenza (1952-1956).

He was ordained priest in Piacenza on June 4^th, 1955.

Upon completing his theological studies, Fr. Aristide was assigned to Italy as: chaplain of the Temple of the Sacred Heart Parish (1956-1958); and rector of the Xaverian house in Alzano Lombardo (1958-1964).

In 1964, Fr. Michele left for Burundi, where, after few months spent in Bururi to study the Kirundi language, he ministered in Murago as parish vicar and director of the dispensary (1965-1969). From 1969 to 1974, he served as regional superior of the Xaverian Region of Central Africa (Burundi and Zaire). In that period, he was also elected delegate to the IX General Chapter (1971).

After studying French in Paris for one year (1974-1975), Fr. Michele went to Rome (College in Via Tardini) to specialise in Moral Theology at the Alphonsian Academy (1975-1977). Subsequently, he returned to Burundi, where he ministered as parish priest in Kigwena, till the day missionaries were expelled from the country (November 20^th, 1981). In that period, he was also elected delegate to the X General Chapter (1977).

In 1982, Fr. Michele waited in Italy for some months before being assigned to the new mission of Cameroon-Chad where he served as superior Delegate (1982-1988), then as Regional Superior (1988-1991). He was elected delegate to the XI General Chapter (1983) and the XII General Chapter (1989). At the end of his tenure as regional superior, he worked as chaplain of Bafoussan-Koptchou (1991-1992).

In 1992, Fr. Michele was assigned to the Central Delegation – specifically, to the house in Tavernario as rector of the community (1992-1998), director of on-going formation programmes (1992-2000), of the Tre Mesi  (Three Months), and the Four Weeks of Xaverian Spirituality. He was also delegate to the XIII General Chapter (1995).

In 2000, Fr. Michele was assigned to the Italian Region to work as promoter of mission awareness, as assistant to the Rector, and in pastoral ministry in Salerno (2000-2005); then carried out ministry and promotion of mission awareness in Taranto (2005-2021). In June 2021, he moved to the community of the Mother House – Fourth Floor in Parma for medical treatment.

“...I am well acquainted with the missionary and religious spirit of the Xaverian. Now, I feel an ardent desire to sacrifice my youth and entire life so that Christ’s Reign may come among the non-Christian… Even if the missionary-religious ideal is intertwined with the most painful surrenders and sacrifices, yet it is too beautiful and sublime: one is not worthy enough to follow it. However, by completely mistrusting myself and confidently abandoning myself to Divine Mercy, I believe I will reach the goal and become a useful instrument in the hands of my superiors to the greater glory of God and for the salvation of the souls… ” (application for admission to the first profession, San Pietro in Vincoli, September 11^th, 1947). 

“… given the aches and pains I have accumulated over the past few years, I have never thought of reaching this stage. At the end of life, I don’t find comfort in considering the few lights which, by pure grace from the Lord, I could lit along my way, rather it is the shadows that I find heavy to bear, for I acknowledge that I have not always been consistent with my great and beautiful missionary vocation. I am not going to live in discomfort though, for I totally trust in the infinitely merciful Love of the Lord. As for a detailed report of my life, my wish is to make it heart to heart with the Lord Jesus…” (Letter to Fr. Luigi Menegazzo, on the occasion of his 60^th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood, Taranto, May 29^th, 2015).

On June 21^st, 2022, Fr. Michele went up to Heaven where now he can finally be “heart to heart with the Lord Jesus.”
