Alle ore 07.00 del 19.1.1996, a Sarnico (Bergamo), è deceduto il P. Romano Rolli, vinto dal sarcoma cerebrale che aveva cominciato a manifestarsi tra il 1984-85. Il Padre avrebbe compiuto 70 anni il prossimo agosto, essendo nato a Sarnico il 19.08.1926.
P. Romano è stato una vocazione adulta. Nell'aprile del '44 entrò nella casa Saveriana di Grumone (Cremona) e in tre anni e mezzo compì gli studi ginnasiali; fece quindi il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna) e il 12.09.1948 emise la Prima Professione.
Dopo i tre anni di Liceo a Desio (Milano) e il Prefettato ad Ancona, fu inviato al Holliston, Mass. (USA). Negli Stati Uniti il Padre frequentò i quattro anni di teologia e, dopo l'ordinazione sacerdotale, 2.2.1956, fu per sei anni Vicerettore nella comunità di Holliston, editor di Xaverian Missions Magazine. Nel frattempo conseguì, presso il Boston College, il Master of education.
Nel 1962 il P. Romano fu destinato alla missione della Sierra Leone dove lavorò per più di diciotto anni. Nei primi due anni fu insegnante nella scuola secondaria e poi, dal 1964 al 1981, Preside del Teachers College di Makeni. In questo lungo periodo ebbe anche l'incarico di Ispettore scolastico e si sobbarcò alla faticosa impresa di costruire una nuova sede del College.
Nel 1983, dopo un periodo di vacanze, cure e aggiornamento, il P. Romano fu nuovamente destinato alla Regione Saveriana degli USA. Fu ancora ad Holliston, come Rettore e Consigliere Regionale. Nel 1987, stanco e stressato, ritornò in Italia e si stabilì a Sarnico. Nel 1988 chiese l'esclaustrazione per un anno e nel 1993 ottenne l'indulto di incardinazione nella Diocesi di Bergamo, ma il decreto non fu attuato perché, circa un anno dopo, decise di rimanere nella Famiglia Saveriana.
Gli ultimi tre anni di P. Romano sono stati particolarmente segnati dall'impegno nel discernimento personale e nella lotta contro il tumore che si andava progressivamente rivelando in tutta la sua gravità. Ma va anche sottolineato il fatto che il Padre esercitò costantemente il servizio pastorale fino a quando il male, che lo stava minando, glielo consentì.
Piace concludere queste scarne note con quanto P. Romano scrisse nel lontano 1947, rivelando i motivi profondi del la sua scelta missionaria: "... Riconoscevo la bellezza del totale servizio di Dio, la necessità di soccorrere e beneficare le anime, ma perché proprio io dovevo fare questo? Desideravo che gli altri seguissero questa via, tanti degli altri; ma non potevo pensare a questo senza sentire in me qualcosa che mi diceva: Come potrebbero farlo gli altri se non lo fai tu prima? Perché gli altri sì e tu no?".
P. Romano ha fedelmente servito il Signore. Preghiamo perché ora il Signore lo accolga nel suo Paradiso.

Fr. Romano Rolli died at 7:00am on January 19 1996 at Sarnico (Bergamo), of a cerebral tumor that appeared at the end of 1984. Fr. Romano was 69 years old, born at Sarnico on Aug. 19 1926.
Fr. Romano joined the Xaverians later in life, on April 1944 (at the age of18), at Grumone (Cremona) where he did his high school studies. Then he moved to Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna) where he professed First Vows on Sept. 12 1948. After three years in Desio (Milan) and prefect at Ancona, he was sent to Holliston, Mass. (USA). In the United States, Fr. Romano did his four years of theology, which ended with the priesthood ordination on Feb. 2 1956. After the ordination, he was vice-rector of that community, editor of the “Xaverian Missions Magazine,” while also receiving a Master of Education at Boston College.
In 1962, Fr. Romano was assigned to Sierra Leone where he worked for more than 18 years. In the first two years, he taught at the high school level at Makeni Teachers’ College, and then from 1964 to 1981, he served as Principal of that College. During this long period, he was also put in charge of School Education, and he even undertook the heavy burden to build a new residence for the College.
After a period of vacations, health care and aggiornamento in Italy, Fr. Romano was reassigned to the US Province in 1983. He returned to Holliston as Rector and as Provincial Councilor. Tired and stressed from this experience, he went to his family home in Sarnico in 1987. The following year, he asked for a year exclaustration, which was granted in 1993 with the permit to incardinate in the Diocese of Bergamo; this permit was never acted upon because, about a year later, he decided to remain with the Xaverian family.
The last three years of Fr. Romano’s life were particularly marked by his personal discernment and his fight of a cancer which was progressively advancing in all its seriousness. Yet, it can be underlined that Fr. Romano exercised constantly his pastoral service until he was able to do that, considering his disease.
It’s good to conclude these few notes of his life, with some points of a letter which Fr. Romano wrote in 1947, which revealed the deep motivations of his mission choice: “I recognized the beauty of a total service to God, and the need to help and to be of benefit to souls; but why me? Why should I do this? I wished that others my choose this life, many others; yet I could not think of this without hearing in me something that would ask: ‘How can others do this unless you answer first? Why other ‘yes,’ and you ‘no?’”
Fr. Romano has faithfully served the Lord. Let’s pray that the Lord may welcome him into Paradise.
