Alle 02.00 del 7.5.96, a Padova, in casa della sorella presso la quale si trovava per una breve visita, il P. Ugo Zambon è stato colpito da un infarto, il terzo dopo quelli del 1986 e 1993. Nonostante il soccorso della sorella e il pronto intervento della Croce Verde, il P. Ugo intorno alle 02.30 ha cessato di vivere. Aveva 63 anni, essendo nato a Piazzola sul Brenta (PD) il giorno 1.5.1933.
P. Ugo ha percorso il suo iter formativo tra i Saveriani: entrato all’istituto il 20.10.1946, frequentò le tre medie a Vicenza e il ginnasio a Zelarino; fece il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli, dove emise la Prima Professione il 12. 9.52; frequentò il Liceo a Desio; fu viceprefetto dei probandi a Parma; studiò teologia a Piacenza (56-58) e a Parma (58-60), dove fu ordinato presbitero il 25.10.1959. Di quegli anni non si può dimenticare che il P. Ugo, appassionato giocatore di calcio, fu l’anima delle attività sportive delle grosse comunità di studenti di quei tempi.
Dopo un anno di studio della lingua Inglese a Glasgow partì per la Sierra Leone. Dal 1961 al 1970 fu aiutante a Lunsar. P. Calza scriveva nel 1968: «Il P. Zambon assiste il P. Stefani nelle costruzioni, tiene l’economia della casa, visita e controlla le scuole fuori, tiene dietro al Catholic Relief Service e la domenica celebra la S. Messa nelle out-stations».
Naturalmente - come ha ricordato P. Frigo nell’omelia della messa esequiale - organizzò tornei di calcio tra le varie scuole della missione, correndo da un villaggio all’altro per mettere assieme le varie squadre, alle quali, però, non mancava mai di raccomandare: «Bisogna giocare per vincere, ma soprattutto bisogna accettare anche la sconfitta. Ogni giocatore deve indossare la “maglietta” dell’onestà e del rispetto dell’altro».
Nel 1970 passò a Magburaka e, l’anno successivo, divenne parroco della grossa missione alla quale facevano capo 17 scuole. La relazione che accompagna il resoconto spirituale del 70-71 ricorda che non amministrò i battesimi nella Pasqua-Pentecoste del 1971 “per mancanza della necessaria preparazione dei catecumeni”; presenta inoltre un P. Ugo intento alla programmazione: “Si sente anche il bisogno di una scuola secondaria che raccolga almeno parte dei nostri cattolici che vengono dalle nostre scuole elementari. Altrimenti in gran parte essi vanno a proseguire i loro studi in scuole non cattoliche e riesce assai difficile continuarne la formazione cristiana”.
Nel 1973 ritornò in Italia per curarsi da una broncopatia, che gli rendeva difficoltosa la respirazione. Ripartì per la Sierra Leone nel 1977 e lavorò nella missione di Lungi. Ma nel 79, per la broncopatia, dovette rientrare in Italia.
Iniziò così la seconda fase della sua esistenza, segnata dalla poca salute, che risultò ulteriormente compromessa, nel 1986 e 1993, da due gravi infarti. Impulsivo e portato ad attività pratiche, il P. Ugo dovette inventarsi, con immaginabili difficoltà, altre disponibilità, altri servizi. Si prestò per l’accoglienza e per un po’ di ministero a Vicenza (80-85), poi a Udine (85-91), a Zelarino (91-93). Dal 1993 faceva parte della comunità di Parma.
Il Padre della misericordia lo accolga nei cieli nuovi e nella terra nuova del Signore risorto.

Fr. Ugo Zambon died of a heart attack at 2.00am of May 7 1996 at the house of his sister in Padova. He was visiting her for a few days, and this was his third attack, following those of 1986 and 1993. Fr. Ugo was 63 years old, born at Piazzola sul Brenta (Padova) on May 1 1933.
He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on Oct. 20 1946, and followed the curriculum of that time, with studies at Zelarino, Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli, with Religious Missionary Profession on May 12 1952, then Desio, vice-prefect at Parma, and theology in Piacenza (1956-58) and Parma (1958-60) where he was ordained priest on Oct. 25 1959. He was an avid soccer player, and the theology community would rely on him for organizing the different sport activities.
After a year of English studies in Glasgow, he departed for Sierra Leone. He was assistant in Lunsar (1961-70), and then pastor in Magburaka (1970-73), always organizing soccer tournaments among the children of the parish, taking care of Catholic Relief Services, and following the Christian education in the schools.
Fr. Calza wrote in 1968: "Fr. Zambon assists Fr. Stefani in the constructions, is in charge of the economy of the house, visits and checks on the schools, follows the Catholic Relief Service, and is often in the outstations to celebrate Mass on Sunday." Fr. Frigo, who did the eulogy at his funeral Liturgy, mentioned how "natural" was for him to organize the children in Soccer Tournaments, going from village to village to gather the teams. In the meantime, he would remind them that "we play to win, but we need to be able to deal with defeat too. Every player must play with honesty, respecting the opponents."
He is named parish priest at Magburaka in 1970 where he worked for a couple of years, taking care of the 17 schools of the area. We read in the Annual Parish Books that there were no baptisms during the Easter period of 1971 "because of lack of preparation of the catechumens." In them, we also notice the project that Fr. Zambon drew for the parish: "We need a high school which would allow the few Catholics to continue in their education after elementary school. Otherwise they will join other non-Catholic schools, and it will be difficult to keep up with their Christian formation."
He returned to Italy in 1973 for health reasons, but was able to returned to Sierra Leone in 1977 where he worked in Lungi for only two years. Bronchitis problems seemed to have the best of him.
And so Fr. Zambon served in pastoral ministry and as a welcoming person in the communities of Vicenza (1980-85), Udine (1985-91), and Zelarino (1991-93). His first heart attack happened in 1986. Following his second heart attack of 1993, he joined the community of the Mother House in Parma.
May the Father of mercy welcome him into the new heavens and new earth of the Risen Lord.
