P. Innocenzo Ambrico

All’ospedale Clinica del Mar di Mazatlan, alle ore 12.45 del 26.2.1999, è morto P. Innocenzo Ambrico. Ospedalizzato a causa di una broncopolmonite, si era praticamente ripreso tanto che i medici pensavano di dimetterlo. Ma poi, improvviso, è sopravvenuto un grave infarto e, dopo un paio d’ore, il decesso. Con i suoi 97 anni e il n. 39 di Professione P. Ambrico era il più anziano, il vegliardo, dei Saveriani viventi. Era nato a Grassano (MT) il 2.9.1902.
Entrò tra i Saveriani a Parma il 27 agosto 1916. Partendo dalla seconda ginnasio – aveva frequentato la prima, da privatista, al paese – percorse il curricolo scolastico e formativo allora vigente: il ginnasio (‘16-‘20), il Noviziato (‘20-’21) con la Prima Professione il 17.09.1921, il Prefettato a Vicenza (‘21-’22); poi, ancora a Parma, il Liceo e la Teologia (‘22-’27). Furono gli anni irripetibili e favolosi della presenza del Fondatore, della banda (1918), della corale, della SPEM (Studi Professionali ElettroMeccanici di Fontana, Germano e Ambrico), della cinematografia (con il Nido degli Aquilotti, una della prime pellicole prodotte negli ambienti missionari), delle feste con accademie e teatri in cui P. Ambrico aveva non piccola parte.
Fu ordinato Presbitero il 24.2.1927 e, dieci giorni più tardi, ricevette la destinazione per la Cina. La partenza, però, a causa degli scontri militari in atto nell’Honan, tra le truppe nazionaliste di Tchang Kai Scheck e quelle del Generale Tchang Tsolin, avvenne l’anno successivo.
Giunto in Cina il 14 maggio 1928, vi rimase per diciotto anni, fino al 17 luglio 1946. Furono anni contrassegnati, via via, dalle ribellioni militari, dalle incursioni dei briganti, dalle carestie, dalle inondazioni, dal concentramento durante l’invasione giapponese e dalla Grande Marcia di Mao tse tung. P. Ambrico lavorò praticamente sempre nella pastorale. Dapprima a Hsu chang con il P. Magnani, dopo un accelerato studio del cinese, e poi a Shan Chow (‘29-’30), a Loyang (‘30-‘33), di nuovo a Shan Chow (33-37), Yen chin (37-40), Loyang (‘41-’42) e, dopo il concentramento (‘42-’45), ancora a Loyang. Nel marzo del ’46 i confratelli della missione di Loyang lo elessero Capitolare e il P. Ambrico ritornò in Italia per partecipare al IV° Capitolo Generale.
Dopo il Capitolo, ebbe l’incarico di esplorare la possibilità dell’apertura di una casa Saveriana a Bari; fu quindi Direttore spirituale a Grumone (’47); nel gennaio del ’48 raggiunse i PP. Cattenati e Paolucci a Madrid perché si pensava di aprire una casa in Spagna (‘48). Il tentavo non riuscì e i tre saveriani, su consiglio di P. Maciel Marcial, il Fondatore dei Legionari di Cristo, si orientarono per l’apertura di un Collegio Cattolico nella città di Mazatlan, Sin. Messico.
P. Ambrico giunse in Messico nell’ottobre 1952 e rimase sempre all’ICO “vivendone tutte le difficoltà, le lotte e i sacrifici, e contribuendo esemplarmente ai successi scolastici, e curando soprattutto l’educazione cristiana degli alunni e delle loro Famiglie” (P. G. F. Lett. 18.7.81). Fu Direttore della primaria; insegnò Catechismo, Morale, Francese, Storia universale; si occupò per molti anni della preparazione alle Prime Comunioni e, soprattutto, finché le forze lo sostennero, fu il padre del Sacramento del Perdono per gli alunni ed ex alunni dell’ICO.
Non c’è dubbio che egli ha cercato di vivere quanto il Fondatore, ispirandosi alla Parola di Dio, gli scrisse sul libro delle Costituzioni il giorno della partenza per la Cina: “La carità di Cristo tutto tollera, tutto affronta, a tutto si rende superiore, non viene mai meno, perché è forte come la morte, essa abbraccia il tempo e l’eternità”.
Il Signore accolga nel suo Regno questo suo servo fedele, degno figlio del Beato Guido.

Fr. Innocenzo Ambrico died at the Clinica del Mar hospital of Mazatlan at about 1 pm on Feb. 26 1999. He was recovered there because of pneumonia, and it seemed that everything was going well. But suddenly he suffered a heart attack, and was not able to recover. He was the oldest living member of the Xaverian congregation, with his 97 years, his Profession number was #39. He was born at Grassano (MT) on Sept. 2 1902.
The formation of Fr. Ambrico followed the curriculum set of the time: he entered the Xaverians in Parma on Aug. 27 1916 (14 years old), and went through high school studies, Novitiate with Religious Profession on Sept. 17 1921, prefect at Vicenza and more studies in Parma until his priesthood ordination on Feb. 24 1927. These were the famous years of the Theology of Parma, with the presence of the Founder, the band, the chorus, the Professional Studies in Electro-mechanics, of movies and theater performance. Fr. Ambrico was an influential part of the get-togethers of the Community.
After 10 days of his ordination, he received the assignment for China, but because of the situation in Honan, was not able to get there until May 15 1928, and served in China for 18 years in pastoral work: first in Hsu chang with Fr. Magnani, then in Shan Chow (1929-30), at Loyang (1930-33), again in Shan Chow (1933-37), in Yen chin (1937-40), in Loyang (1941-42) and after the concentration camp (1942-45) again in Loyang. He suffered military rebellions, revolts of brigands, famines, flooding, concentration camp, the difficulties Japanese-Chinese War, and the advent of the Communist Regime by Mao.
He represented the Chinese Province as the delegate at the 4th General Chapter in 1946, and was then assigned to houses in Italy, with various responsibilities: study the possibility of an opening in Bari, spiritual director at Grumone (1947) and together with Frs. Cattenati and Paolucci looked for an opening in Madrid, Spain in 1948. Following the advice from Fr. Maciel Marcial, founder of the Legionaries of Christ, they went to Mazatlan, Mexico, and started the ICO in October 1952.
Since then, Fr. Ambrico spent his entire life in Mexico, as a teacher and spiritual director of the College, investing his resources for the success of this foundation, "living through all difficulties, battles and sacrifices, contributing in an exemplary way to the school success, and caring for the Christian educations of the students and their families," as Fr. G. Ferrari wrote on July 18 1981. In fact, he was director of the primary school, taught Catechism, Moral Theology, French, Universal History, followed the preparation of the First Communicants, and most of all, was ever available for the sacrament of Reconciliation to the students and alumni of the ICO.
Without a doubt, Fr. Ambrico lived faithfully the words that the Founder, inspired by the Scriptures, wrote in his book of Constitutions before he departed for China: "The Love of Christ bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, becomes superior of all things, will never fail, for it is stronger than death, and it embraces all time and eternity."
