A Parma, in Casa Madre, intorno alle 20.50 della domenica 6.12.98, è spirato Mons. Giovanni Gazza consumato dal tumore e finito da un infarto insorto nelle prime ore dello stesso giorno. Si è concluso così il lungo calvario iniziato nel 1992 con l’intervento per l’applicazione di bypass coronarici; fattosi successivamente più aspro per la comparsa di un tumore intestinale che si tentò di debellare con tre grossi interventi chirurgici; divenuto infine crocifiggente negli ultimi mesi, trascorsi più dentro che fuori della clinica delle Piccole Figlie di Parma. Aveva settantaquattro anni compiuti, essendo nato a Parma il 19.07.1924.
Mons. Gianni (come tutti lo chiamavano in Congregazione per distinguerlo dallo zio P. Giovanni) entrò tra i Saveriani nella casa di Grumone (CR) il 24.9.39. Dopo i due anni di ginnasio passò a S. Pietro in Vincoli (RA) per il Noviziato; l’8.9.42 emise la Prima Professione. Fu quindi a Parma (42-49) per gli studi Liceali e Teologici. Fu ordinato presbitero il 29.6.49.
Dopo l’ordinazione fu trattenuto in Casa Madre, incaricato dell’amministrazione dell’Ufficio Stampa e Propaganda. Trovò il tempo per iscriversi all’Università, ma non poté giungere alla Laurea perché i Superiori lo destinarono alle opere Saveriane del Brasile.
Mons. Gianni lavorò in Brasile dal gennaio 1957 al settembre 1966. Dapprima (57-59) come Direttore del Centro Saveriano di Azione Missionaria (CSAM) di S. Paulo, poi (59-62) a Jaguapità, PR come Rettore della prima Scuola Apostolica Saveriana del Brasile.
Nel 1962 gli fu chiesto di guidare come Vescovo la Prelazia di Abaetetè do Tocantins, PA: “quello che mi decise, dopo inevitabili titubanze ed ansietà, fu il ricordo del motto episcopale dello stesso Papa Giovanni: ‘Oboedientia et Pax’. Ero sicuro che non mi si offrivano onori o privilegi: piuttosto mi si chiedeva un’umile e generosa disponibilità a servire il Regno di Dio in una terra lontana, disagiata e certamente bisognosa di energie giovanili” (Omelia per il XXV di Episcopato, Aversa 10.12.87).
Fu ordinato Vescovo l’8.12.1962 e il suo servizio episcopale nella Prelazia, intercalato dalla partecipazione al Concilio Vaticano II, durò quattro anni.
Eletto Superiore Generale dell’Istituto il 3 settembre 1966, e riconfermato il 18.8.71, Mons. Gianni offrì il suo Servizio di Superiore per undici anni: “… E’ stato Superiore durante un periodo di transizione non facile. Ha portato la Direzione Generale da Parma a Roma… ha incoraggiato l’apertura all’internazionalizzazione… ha difeso con forza la Congregazione contro critiche superficiali… con la sua sapienza ha favorito la fioritura della novità del Vaticano II tra i Saveriani. Era un fratello tra i fratelli” (P. Maloney, 7.12.98).
Dal ’77 all’80 visse alla Casa Madre: “molto fraterno e amico di tutti, [dandoci a tutti] una testimonianza straordinariamente quotidiana di semplicità e di vita comune” (P. G. Ferrari, 9.10.87).
Il 27.11.80 fu nominato Vescovo di Aversa (CE), una diocesi dove “le udienze quotidiane, i contatti personali con i sacerdoti ed i fedeli sono ininterrotti. Il Vescovo, praticamente, «non stacca mai»” (Lett. del 20.10.92). Prestò il suo servizio di Pastore per 12 anni. Poi, per motivi di salute dovette “staccare”: la notizia delle sue dismissioni apparve sull’Osservatore Romano del 25.5. 92.
Non c’è dubbio che Mons. Gianni ha vissuto quanto scrisse nella domanda di ammissione alla Professione Perpetua (14.9.46): “Le confesso, Padre, che nessuna cosa mi ha fatto paura; il sacrificio anzi, mi entusiasma. Penso che il Signore non poteva farmi grazia maggiore di quella di chiamarmi alla vita Missionaria”.
Il Signore gli conceda la pace e la gioia del Regno Eterno.

Msgr. Giovanni Gazza died at the Mother House in Parma at about 8.50 pm of Sunday Dec. 6 1998, consumed by an intestinal tumor, following a heart attack in the early hours of the same day. Since 1992 he underwent bypass and three major surgeries to remove his intestinal tumor, receiving care at the Piccole Figlie clinic. He was 74 years old, born in Parma on July 19 1924.
Msgr. Gianni (as he was called among the Xaverians, to distinguish him from his uncle Fr. Giovanni) entered the Xaverians in Grumone (Cremona) on Sept. 24 1939. He did his Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna) and made his first Profession on Sept. 8 1942. Then he continued his studies of theology in Parma, with the priesthood ordination celebrated on June 29 1949.
After ordination, he was put in charge of the Printing and Animation office of Parma. During this time, he also enrolled at the University, but was not able to finish his Doctorate Degree. Instead, he was assigned to Brazil in 1957, and was director of the Center of Missionary Animation (CSAM) of S. Paolo (1957-59), and rector of the first Apostolic Xaverian School of Brazil in Jaguapità (1959-62).
In 1962 he was asked to be Bishop of the Prelacy of Abaetetè do Tocantins, PA, which he exercised as an act of obedience: "After some natural anxiety and doubts, what made me decide to accept this role was the episcopal motto of Pope John XXIII 'Obedience and Peace'. I was sure that there were no honors or privileges given, rather what was been asked of me was a humble and generous availability to serve the Reign of God in a distant land, which was at a disadvantage and certainly needing some younger energies." (words of his Homily during the celebration of his 25th anniversary of Episcopal Ordination at Aversa, on Dec. 10 1987). He was ordained Bishop on Dec. 8 1962, and his work in the Prelacy was only 4 years long, which included also his participation in the Vatican Council II.
On Sept. 3 1966 Fr. Gianni Gazza was elected Superior General of the Congregation and re-appointed on Aug. 18 1971, for a total service of 11 years: “He was General during a difficult period of transition. He brought the General Direction from Parma to Rome… He encouraged the opening to internationalization of the Xaverians… He defended with strength the Congregation from superficial criticism… and with his wisdom Msgr. Gazza favored the flourishing of the newness of Vatican II teachings among the Xaverians. He was a brother among brothers.” (Fr. Maloney, Dec. 7 1998).
From 1977 to 1980 he lived in the Mother House joining in the community life. He was "a friendly and brotherly presence with all, giving us all an extraordinary witness of daily simplicity and community life" wrote Fr. G. Ferrari on Oct. 9 1987).
He was then named Bishop of Aversa (Cesena) on Nov. 28 1980, spending his time “shepherding” his own flock, until his retirement in May 1992. During his 12 years of service in this diocese, he "would receive daily visits, keeping ever in touch with the priests and the faithful. The Bishop, practically speaking, 'never detaches himself'." (Letter of Oct. 20 1992). The publication of his retirement is found on the "Osservatore Romano" of May 25 1992.
Without a doubt, Msgr. Gianni lived what he expressed in his request for admission of the Perpetual Profession, back in 1946: "I would like to confess you, Father, that nothing brought me fear; rather, personal sacrifice enthuses me. I believe that the Lord would not bestow upon me a greater grace than the one of having me called to missionary life." (Sept. 14 1946)
