Il 22.2.97, alle ore 09.00, nella residenza della cattedrale di Padang è stato trovato morto P. Ermanno Santandrea: era seduto sulla sedia della stanza da letto e stava, sembra, vestendosi. Il P. Ermanno, colpito da infarto agli inizi del 1987, sottoposto all’applicazione di tre bypass coronarici nel gennaio del 94, era uscito da un paio di giorni dall’ospedale di Padang dove era stato ricoverato per palpitazioni e dolori cardiaci. Aveva da poco compiuto 60 anni essendo nato a Pieve Thò di Brisighella (RA) il 23.10.1936.
P. Ermanno fu allievo, fino alla propedeutica, del Seminario di Faenza. Nel 1958 entrò nel Noviziato di S. Pietro in Vincoli. Nella presentazione il Rettore del Seminario non mancava di sottolineare, tra l’altro, “le capacità non comuni nel gioco e negli esercizi fisici, come nel lavoro manuale”: P. Ermanno fu effettivamente un abile giocatore di calcio e un generoso e instancabile lavoratore. Emise la Prima Professione il 25 ottobre 1959; frequentò i corsi di teologia a Parma dove nel 1962 fu ordinato presbitero.
L’11 settembre dell’anno successivo partì per l’Indonesia dove, escluse tre brevi parentesi italiane (1973, 1979, 1994-95), trascorse tutta la sua vita.
Lavorò fino al 1980 a Padang. Sempre, tranne un anno a Pekambaru (1970) e un altro in Seminario come Rettore (1972), alla cattedrale come aiutante, incaricato dei chierichetti, degli scouts, dell’ora di Religione nelle scuole della missione e come assistente dei 13 presidi della Legio Mariae.
Nel 1980 fu nominato parroco della comunità parrocchiale Stella maris del Pluit di Jakarta. Il P. Ermanno dedicò particolare cura alla liturgia, alla catechesi, all’evangelizzazione attraverso l’azione di numerosi laici debitamente preparati e, nella parrocchia che contava grandi ricchi e molti poveri, creò un significativo flusso di solidarietà tra la zona residenziale e quella periferica devolvendo il 30% delle offerte raccolte in chiesa per le attività sociali: furono edificate numerose piccole abitazioni per i meno abbienti, due scuole per i ragazzi della periferia e una piccola casa di ricovero per anziani; fu costituito un gruppo per trovare lavoro ai disoccupati e assicurare cure ospedaliere ai più bisognosi.
Si può affermare che P. Ermanno attuò pienamente quanto scriveva di lui il suo Rettore di Teologia nel 1962: “... si può legittimamente credere che potrà fare del lavoro prezioso nella vigna del Signore. Ne sono prova il suo impegno per la vita spirituale, la sua applicazione al dovere, e il suo desiderio del bene altrui”.
Il Signore, che lo ha condotto ultimamente attraverso l’aspro deserto della sofferenza, lo accolga nella Terra promessa del suo Paradiso.

Fr. Ermanno Santandrea was found dead in the rectory of the Cathedral of Padang on February 22 1997. It was a heart attack as he was dressing up; he had already triple by-pass surgery in 1994 after a milder attack in 1987. Two days earlier he had come home from Padang Hospital since he felt heart pain. He was 60 years old, born at Pieve Thò di Brisighella (Ravenna) on Oct. 23 1936.
Fr. Ermanno entered the Xaverians in Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli in 1958 after studies at the diocesan seminary of Faenza. His Seminary Rector introduced him as "someone with uncommon talents in sports and physical exercises, and excels in manual work." He professed Religious missionary Vows on Oct. 25 1959, and after years of theology studies in Parma, he was ordained a priest in 1962.
Fr. Ermanno left for Indonesia soon after, on Sept. 11 1963, where he spent most of his life, except for three periods in Italy (1973, 1979, 1994-95). He served mainly in Padang until 1980 as assistant to the cathedral, in charge of altar servers, scouts, and chaplain of the 13 chapters of the Legio Mariae. For a year he was at Pekanbaru (1970), and another was spent as Rector of the Seminary (1972).
Sr. Anna Suzany remembers: “He was an honest, holy man, untiring worker for the Reign of God and the salvation of souls. He loved everyone: children, youths, adults, but especially the sick, elderly and abandoned. He loved his spiritual children with true fatherly love. He became my spiritual director from 1967, and followed me in my vocation journey until the day of my entering the Congregation of ALI.”
Recalled back in Italy, Fr. Ermanno wrote to the Superior General from S. Pietro in Vincoli: “Much it cost me to come back, and even more costly is to know that I will be here in Italy for a while… Did I leave the diocesan seminary to remain in Italy? I have the chills to know that I will spend this time in Italy.” (Oct. 10 1973)
Fr. Fasolini remembers him when he was assigned to the Cathedral of Padang, on his second turn in Indonesia: “His ability to give himself to others was understood and appreciated by the people. It was a love much deserving, for he would not hold back on anything, even to the point of personal suffering, amidst our warnings to him. Every day was filled till the dark night with meetings, celebrations, sporting events, Legio Marie, dinners, etc.”
In 1980 he was named pastor of the parish Stella Maris of Pluit of Jakarta, dedicating himself to the care of the liturgy, catechesis, evangelization, and human promotion through the sharing of 30% of the parish profits to the needs of the disadvantaged, unemployed, caring for those who were sick, building of outskirts schools, and a small nursing home. He wrote: “In the past month I baptized 30 adults and 25 children. It was a great setback for Satan’s reign. There are many adults who want to know Jesus, which gives me joy. I keep going with the project of building simple houses for 16 families who have been without drinking water for three months of the year. The Bishop is in favor, as well as all our Christians… At the end of this month we will begin two more catecumenate courses for adults, with two big groups.” (Aug. 19 1986)
Fr. Geremia lists his qualities: “I love to recall his passion for the apostolate and his service to his people… his profound spirituality… his love for the poor and the least… his love for prayer.” Fr. Ermanno's Theology Rector wrote back in 1962: "...Without a doubt, we can believe that he can do precious wonders in the Vineyard of the Lord. Proofs of that are his commitment to his spiritual life, his commitment to his duties, and his desire for the good of others."
May the Lord, who asked him to go through the dark valley of suffering, welcome him into the Promised Land, his Paradise.
