Verso le 9.37 del 17 agosto 2009, a Parma, in Casa Madre, inaspettatamente è morto per arresto cardiocircolatorio P. Paolo Stasi.
Aveva 68 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Ugento (Lecce) il 1°.2.1941.
Proveniente dal Seminario della diocesi di Ugento, entrò tra i Saveriani a San Pietro in Vincoli il 1° ottobre 1959. Il 3.10.1960 emise la Prima Professione; dal 1960 al 1963 frequentò il liceo a Desio; dopo l'anno di propedeutica a Parma, fu prefetto delle vocazioni adulte a Desio; dal 1965 al 1969 compì gli studi teologici a Parma. E a Parma fu ordinato presbitero il 13.10.1968.
I tratti salienti della personalità del P. Paolo sono evidenziati nelle presentazioni prescritte per i passaggi canonici dell'iter formativo dei religiosi. E sono giudizi più che positivi: "Ben fondato nella vocazione. Volonteroso e intraprendente anche se non dotato di qualità eminenti. Serio e disciplinato. Sa anche (quando è il caso) tenere allegra la brigata. Pietà più che buona". (Presentazione alla Prima Professione). "È uno dei giovani più seri, posati e sicuri della classe. Prende sul serio gli impegni della vita religiosa … Intelligenza media, applicazione lodevole, resa soddisfacente. Rivela molto spirito di sacrificio nella dedizione al lavoro e nell'esplicazione del suo zelo apostolico" (Presentazione alla Professione Perpetua). "Ha un temperamento buono ed equilibrato. Si è dedicato ai giochi di prestigio con notevole successo. Ha coltivato, con serietà e profitto, lo studio, la vita interiore, l'apostolato. Merita fiducia e può occupare posti di responsabilità"(Presentazione agli Ordini Maggiori).
Concluso l'iter formativo, e dopo appena un anno di vicerettore nella comunità di Cremona, ricevette la destinazione al Burundi che raggiunse nel 1971. Lavorò in quella missione fino al 2005 – esclusi due anni di studio di Missiologia all'Urbaniana di Roma (1975-1977) e quattro anni di avvicendamento alla Procura di Parma (1979-1983) –. Fu impegnato prevalentemente nella pastorale (Matara 72-74; Gisanze 77-78 e 90-99; Ruzo 84-87; Gasura 99-04). Fu anche Superiore della Delegazione dal 1987 al 1990.
Il P. Paolo lavorò in Burundi negli anni drammatici delle lotte per la democrazia, la pace sociale e religiosa: anni insanguinati dalle violenze tra le etnie, segnati dalla politica persecutoria nei confronti della chiesa e dall'espulsione dei missionari. Eppure non risulta che questo abbia intaccato il suo feeling con il Burundi, sbocciato al suo arrivo un quel paese africano: "abbiamo fatto un ottimo viaggio in aereo; poi lo spostamento interno, molto movimentato per le strade ricche di buche e sassi. Il clima è meraviglioso … meglio e più fresco che in Italia" (12.9.71); "la gente è buona e simpatica … hanno tanta pazienza ad ascoltarci e a sforzarsi per capire la loro lingua pronunciata da noi"(1.4.73).
È stato un missionario attento alle cose pratiche; dalle iniziative 'modeste', viabili : "Abbiamo terminato un piccolo porcile. Altri allevamenti sono previsti. Tutto questo, insieme alla produzione del nostro orto dovrebbe darci di che vivere" (6.2.74); "non sono del parere che la missione ha bisogno di tanto materiale per avanzare. Si può e si dovrebbe usare quello che si trova sul posto" (11.2.82).
Lasciò il Burundi nel 2005, con un forte diabete che lo rese mezzo cieco e gli complicò dolorosamente la vita.
A conclusione di queste note biografiche il messaggio inviato dai Saveriani del Burundi per le esequie del P. Paolo, e firmato da P. Tomè:
"Ringraziamo insieme il Padre della vita e la Madre che lo ha protetto.
Rendiamo grazie per i doni concessi al P. Paolo per la gioia di tanti.
Ora con gli occhi di vedente vede Lui,
l'Amico della sua vita, che lo attende là sulla spiaggia dell'eterna vita.
E Gesù gli dice: Hai pescato là dove ti ho fatto cenno, dove ti ho mandato.
Ora vieni a Me, riposati e mangia il pane e il pesce della mia amicizia e della mia pace".

Fr. Paolo Stasi died suddenly of heart failure in the Mother House, Parma, on August 17 2009. Born at Ugento (Lecce, Italy) on February 1 1941, he was 68 years old.
He joined the Xaverians at S. Pietro in Vincoli from the Seminary of the Ugento diocese on Oct. 1 1959. He made his First Profession on Oct. 3 1960; in the period 1960-63 he attended liceo at Desio; after the propedeutic year at Parma, he served as prefect in the adult vocations community in Desio; he completed his theological studies at Parma (1965-69) and was ordained priest there on Oct. 13 1968.
The important aspects of Fr. Paolo’s personality are highlighted in the very positive reports written about him as he moved from one formation stage to another; “His vocation has solid foundations. He is willing and creative, even though he is not endowed with outstanding qualities. He is serious and disciplined. He also knows how to keep the community cheerful (when necessary). His piety is more than good” (Presentation to First Profession). “He is one of the more serious, calm and confident young men in his class. He takes the commitments of religious life seriously… He possesses average intelligence, his application is praiseworthy and his performance is satisfactory. He shows a great spirit of sacrifice in his dedication to work and his apostolic zeal” (Presentation to Final Profession). “He is endowed with a good and balanced temperament. He is very good at conjuring tricks. He has cultivated the interior life and the apostolate in a serious way and with good results. He is worthy of trust and suitable for posts of responsibility” (Presentation to Major Orders).
Upon conclusion of the initial formation program, and after just one year as vice-rector in the community of Cremona, Fr. Paolo was assigned to the mission of Burundi and he arrived there in 1971. He worked in that mission until 2005 – excluding the two years he studied Missiology at the Urbaniana University in Rome (1975-77) and four years at the Parma Procure (1979-83). He worked mainly in the ministry (Matara 1972-74; Gisanze 1977-78 and 1990-99; Ruzo 1984-87; Gasura 1999-2004). He also served as the Superior of the Delegation (1987-90).
Fr. Paolo worked in Burundi during the dramatic years of struggle for democracy and social and religious peace: they were bloody years of ethnic violence, the political persecution of the Church and the expulsion of the missionaries. Yet this did not undermine his feelings for Burundi, which blossomed upon his first arrival in the country: “we had a very good plane journey; our overland trip within the country was very eventful, thanks to the roads ridden with holes and strewn with stones. The climate is wonderful… better and cooler than in Italy” (Sept. 12 1971); “the people are good and pleasant… they listen to us with great patience and do their best to understand our efforts to communicate with them” (April 1 1973).
He was a missionary attentive to practical things and ‘modest’ and feasible projects: “We completed a small pigsty. Other similar initiatives are being planned. This, together with the products of our garden, should provide us with food” (Feb. 6 1974); “I do not believe the mission needs a lot of resources in order to make progress. We can and should use whatever we find in loco” (Feb. 11, 1982).
He left Burundi in 2005 with a severe form of diabetes that left him half blind and afflicted him with its painful complications.
This short biographical profile ends with the message sent by the Xaverians of Burundi for the funeral of Fr. Paolo. It bears the signature of Fr. Tomè:
“Together, we thank the Father of all life and our heavenly Mother who protected him.;
We give thanks for the gifts granted to Fr. Paolo for the joy of many.
His eyes now contemplate the Lord, the Friend of his entire life,
who awaits him on the shores of eternal life.
Jesus says to him: You put out your nets in the place where I sent you.
Now you come to me, rest and eat the bread and the fish of my friendship and peace.”
