Alle 07.30 circa del 4.10.1999, all’Ospedale Maggiore di Bukavu è morto il P. Natalino Tomasi. Il 23 settembre, a causa di un’ernia strozzata, fu trasportato d’urgenza, con il piccolo aereo dei PP. Bianchi, da Kitutu a Bukavu. Fu immediatamente operato e tutto sembrava procedere per il meglio. Il 29 settembre la situazione si complicò e si dovette procedere ad un secondo intervento. Seguirono giorni di alterne speranze: si corse per procurare le medicine che non si trovavano a Bukavu, si praticarono trasfusioni di sangue. Ma il Buon Dio aveva disposto diversamente.
Il P. Natalino era vicino ai sessantaquattro anni, essendo nato a Castelgomberto (VI) il 25.12.1935.
Il primo contatto con i Saveriani ebbe luogo a Castelgomberto nel 1943, in occasione di una festa missionaria predicata da P. Davide Zamparo: P. Natalino dopo avere assistito al film proiettato dal padre, espresse il suo desiderio di farsi missionario. Due anni dopo, nel 1945, entrò all’Istituto di Vicenza dove frequentò la Va elementare e le tre medie (45-49). Passò quindi a Zelarino (VE) per il ginnasio (49-51). Fu poi a Capriglio (PR) e, dopo un mese, a S. Pietro in Vincoli (RA) per l’anno di Noviziato, concluso con la Prima Professione (12.9.1952) alla quale fu presentato dal P. Maestro con questo bel giudizio: “Pietà molto buona… diligente, compìto, semplice e sereno. Assai ben voluto dai compagni. Aperto e delicato di coscienza e di ottimo spirito di sacrificio” (1.8.52).
Alla conclusione dei tre anni di Liceo a Desio (MI) (52-55), i Superiori decisero che P. Natalino proseguisse la sua formazione nelle case Saveriane degli Stati Uniti d’America. Studiò quindi l’inglese a Petersham, MA (55-56); frequentò la prima teologia nel Seminario Maggiore dei Colombani a Milton, MA, e gli altri tre anni nel Seminario Maggiore St. Francis a Milwakee, WI. Fu ordinato presbitero il 6.1.1960.
Dopo l’ordinazione gli fu chiesto di rimanere negli USA dove ebbe l’incarico di Vicerettore nella comunità dello studentato filosofico e teologico di Franklin, WI (61-65) e poi di Direttore delle Stampe saveriane a Holliston, MA e Wayne, NJ (65-72).
Nel 1972 fu destinato alla missione nell’attuale Congo R. D. Studiò il francese a Parigi e poi il Kiswali a Bukavu. Dal ’74 al ‘76 lavorò a Kadutu e dal ’76 all’81 a Mboko.
Nel 1981 fu richiamato negli Stati Uniti, ancora a Franklin, WI, con il compito di Vicerettore e poi di Superiore della comunità; dall’85 all’86 fu Animatore missionario a San Josè, CA.
Nel 1987 ritornò in Congo: fu Cappellano e Parroco a Chimpunda (87-93), Superiore della Casa Regionale a Bukavu (94-96), e infine Parroco a Kitutu (96-99).
Quella del P. Natalino è stata una vita missionariamente esemplare: uscito dalla sua cultura all’età di 19 anni, è praticamente vissuto negli Stati Uniti e nel Congo, passando con grande naturalezza dal Nord al Sud del mondo, dal lavoro di animazione missionaria negli USA alle attività direttamente missionarie in Africa e viceversa.
Ha saputo, inoltre, armonizzare attività e momenti di sosta per aggiornarsi: corso di giornalismo alla Marquette University di Milwakee (62-64); aggiornamento a Parigi (72-73); Master in Divinity a Milwakee (1984); aggiornamento a Roma (86-87); un mese a Gerusalemme (1993).
Ha mantenuto l’impegno espresso nella domanda di ammissione alla Professione perpetua: “… il mio desiderio è quello di poter consacrare tutta la mia vita per la mia santificazione personale mediante l’osservanza delle Costituzioni e delle Regole della Pia Nostra Società e per dedicarmi completamente alla salvezza delle anime degli infedeli” (26.6.58).

Il Signore lo accolga nel Suo Paradiso.

Fr. Noel Tomasi died at the Major Hospital in Bukavu at about 7:30am on Oct. 4 1999. Due to a burst hernia, he was quickly flown from Kitutu to Bukavu with the plane of the White Fathers, and urgently admitted on Sept. 23. After the operation, everything seemed to proceed well. But on Sept. 29, complications occurred and Fr. Noel underwent another operation. The days that followed were both of hope and trepidation: Xaverians went into other cities to procure the needed medicines; there were blood transfusions administered. But the Good Lord had different plans for Fr. Noel.
He was almost 64 years old, born in Castelgomberto (Vicenza) on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 1935.
His first contacts with the Xaverians happened at his hometown in 1943 on the occasion of a Mission Appeal by Fr. Davide Zamparo: after the showing of a missionary movie, Fr. Noel expressed his desire to become a missionary. After two years, he entered the Seminary in Vicenza where he frequented 5th grade and the three years of junior high (1945-49). He then moved on to Zelarino (Venice) for the Ginnasio (1949-51) and entered Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna) where he professed his First Vows on Sept. 12 1952. This was the presentation letter of the Master of Novices at the time: "Very good in his devotions… He's diligent, reflective, simple and serene. He is well liked by his classmates. He is opened and very delicate in his conscience, and with a great spirit of sacrifice" (Aug. 1 1952).
At the conclusion of his three years in Desio (Milan) (1952-55), the Superiors decided to send Fr. Noel to the USA for the continuation of his fomation. And so, he learned English at Petersham, MA in 1955-56; he enrolled in his first theology year at the Major Seminary of the Columban Fathers in Milton, MA, and then proceeded with the rest of the student community to study the remaining three years of theology at S. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, WI. He was ordained a priest on Jan. 6 1960.
After his ordination, he was asked to stay in the USA as Vice-rector of the philosophy and theology student community of Franklin, WI (1961-65) and then became the Director of the Mission Magazine and press in Holliston, MA and Wayne, NJ (1965-72).
He was assigned to the mission of Congo in 1972. After a year of French studies in Paris and another year for Kswahili studies in Bukavu, he worked at Kadutu from 1974 to 1976, and then in Mboko (1976-81).
He again was called back to the USA, mainly in Franklin, WI, as Superior of the community; then he was missionary animator in San Josè, CA (1985-86). In 1987, he returned to Congo: this time, he was pastor at Chimpunda (1987-93), Superior of the Regional House in Bukavu (1994-96), and finally pastor of Kitutu (1996-99).
The life of Fr. Noel was an exemplary missionary life: he left his own culture at the age of 19, and spent practically all of his life in the USA and in Congo, moving with great natural abilities between the North and the South of the world, from the work of mission education in the USA to the more direct mission activities in Africa, and vice versa.
Furthermore, Fr. Noel was able to harmonize activities and moments of pause to update himself: a course on journalism at Marquette University in Milwaukee (1962-64); aggiornamento in Paris (1972-73); Master of Divinity at Milwaukee in 1984; updating course in Rome (1986-87); and even a month-long retreat in Jerusalem in 1993.
He was true to the commitment expressed in his request for Perpetual Profession: "My only wish is to consecrate my whole life for my personal sanctification through the observance of the Constitutions and the Rules of our Society, and to dedicate myself completely for the salvation of unbelieving souls." (June 26, 1958)
"Thanks, Fr. Noel, for the gift of your kindness, your availability, and your pastoral zeal." (From the funeral homily of Fr. Vavassori, Provincial Superior of Congo, in the Cathedral of Bukavu). May the Lord welcome him into Paradise.

Le père Natalino est décédé à 7h30 le 4 octobre 1999, à l’Hôpital Général de Bukavu. Il fut évacué d’urgence de Kitutu à Bukavu, pour une hernie étranglée, le 23 septembre, par l’avion petit porteur des Missionnaires d’Afrique. Il subit tout de suite une intervention chirurgicale apparemment bien réussie. Le 29 septembre, la situation s’aggrava et il dut subir une deuxième intervention. S’ensuivirent des jours d’attente et d’espoir mais le Bon Dieu avait disposé autrement. Le père Natalino était proche de 64 ans étant né à Castelgomberto (Vicence) le 25 décembre 1935.
Il entra chez les Xavériens de Vicence en 1945, après avoir entendu dans son village le témoignage du père David Zamparo, missionnaire au Japon. Il continua ses études à Zelarino (Venise) et entra au Noviciat à San Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenne) où il fit sa Première Profession le 12 septembre 1952. Le maître des novices le présenta ainsi : Très bon esprit de prière (…), appliqué, poli, simple et serein. Assez bien apprécié par ses compagnons. Ouvert, esprit délicat et excellent sens du sacrifice (01.08.1952).
Au terme des études secondaires à Desio (Milan), les supérieurs envoyèrent le père Natalino aux Etats Unis pour étudier la théologie à Milwaukee où il fut ordonné prêtre le 6 janvier 1960. Au lendemain de son ordination, il lui fut demandé de travailler au philosophat et théologat de Franklin (1961 – 1965) et, ensuite, comme directeur du service de presse xavérienne à Holliston et à Wayne (1965 –1972). En 1972, il fut affecté au Congo où, après un stage de langue française à Paris et de swahili à Bukavu, il travailla à Kadutu – Bukavu (1974 – 1976) et à Mboko – Uvira (1976 – 1981). En 1981, il fut envoyé à nouveau aux Etats Unis pour aider à la formation des aspirants xavériens à Franklin et pour le service d’animation missionnaire à Saint José, en Californie. En 1987, il rentra au Congo : il fut vicaire paroissial et puis curé à Cimpunda – Bukavu (1987 – 1993), supérieur de la Maison Régionale de Bukavu (1994 – 1996) et, enfin, curé de Kitutu – Uvira (1996– 1999).
Pendant ces trois dernières années, dans cette paroisse éloignée de la ville, il vécut dans une insécurité forte en raison de la guerre. Il en parle ainsi : Je ne sais pas ce qui nous arrivera. De toutes les façons, je suis content d’être à côté de nos gens en ce moment particulièrement difficile pour eux. Beaucoup d’entre eux ont tout perdu. Notre présence leur donne du courage et de l’espoir. La Parole que nous leur adressons acquiert maintenant une force plus incisive. Si nous partions d’ici sans préavis, nous les laisserions tout seuls (09.11.1996).
La vie du père Natalino a été exemplaire : il quitta sa culture à l’âge de 19 ans pour vivre soit aux Etats Unis soit au Congo, en passant avec souplesse du Nord au Sud du monde, du travail d’animation missionnaire aux Etats Unis aux activités directement missionnaires en Afrique.
Il a été fidèle à son engagement, exprimé ainsi dans sa demande d’admission à la profession perpétuelle : (…) mon désir est de pouvoir consacrer toute ma vie à ma sanctification personnelle moyennant l’observance des Constitutions et des Normes de notre Institut et de me consacrer entièrement au salut des âmes des non-chrétiens (26.06.1958).
Merci, père Natalino, pour le don de ta douceur, pour ta disponibilité et ton zèle pastoral (Père Vavassori, homélie aux obsèques à la Cathédrale de Bukavu).
Que le Seigneur l’accueille dans son Paradis.
Il consacra vingt années difficiles au Congo, saintement amoureux de cette jeune Eglise, du peuple, du clergé, des liturgies solennelles et de nombreux laïcs, ses précieux collaborateurs.
Il partagea avec tous, les abondantes richesses de sa foi active et de son cœur d’apôtre, soucieux de les aider à marcher avec confiance sur le chemin de la foi, de la charité et de l’espérance.
Il les précéda sur ce difficile chemin en se faisant proche de leurs souffrances quotidiennes dues à la guerre, aux tracasseries, à la famine et aux fuites en forêt, prêt aussi à donner sa vie pour ses brebis.
