P. Tonino Caissutti

All’ospedale di Padang, alle ore 21,45 locali del 12.1.1998, è spirato il P. Tonino Caissutti. Il Padre era stato colto da febbre il 9 dicembre u.s. a Siberut (Mentawai). Trasportato con la nave a Padang, il 19 dicembre, fu ricoverato all’ospedale R. S. Yos Sudarso dove gli furono riscontrati malaria, tifo, polmonite e ascesso al fegato. Dopo qualche giorno si pensò di trasferirlo in un ospedale di Jakarta e, poi, di Singapore, ma le condizioni di salute che via via si aggravavano, frustrarono ogni tentativo di trasferimento.
Il 7 gennaio ebbe un arresto cardiaco; fu prontamente rianimato, ma entrò in una fase di incoscienza dalla quale non si è più ripreso. Il Padre aveva compiuto da qualche mese i sessantun anni, essendo nato a Sabaudia (Latina) il 24.9.1936.
P. Tonino entrò nella Scuola Apostolica di Udine nel 1949 e frequentò i tre anni di medie; passò quindi a Zelarino per il Ginnasio e, nel 1955, a S. Pietro in Vincoli per il Noviziato. Il 12 settembre del 56 emise la Prima Professione. Fu quindi a Desio per i tre anni di Liceo e, dopo la Propedeutica e il Prefettato, fece gli studi teologici a Parma dove fu ordinato Presbitero il 25 ottobre 1964. Quelli della formazione furono anni impegnativi per il P. Tonino che, consapevole di essere un tipo impulsivo, esuberante e piuttosto critico, nella domanda di ammissione al Noviziato scriveva: “Ho ancora tanta strada da fare, ma ho anche buona volontà che, unita alla Grazia, mi farà certamente avanzare” (30.7.55). E fu di parola: sorretto da un sincero desiderio di migliorarsi e con una costanza tipicamente friulana, riuscì a raggiungere quella maturità umana alla quale aspirava.
Al termine degli studi teologici, all’età di 29 anni, il P. Tonino fu destinato all’Indonesia, la terra nella quale ha trascorso gli altri trentadue anni della sua vita. Raggiunse la missione nel marzo del 66 e dopo un breve periodo di introduzione alla vita missionaria fu inviato nelle Mentawai come aiutante a Sipora (66-67), poi a Siberut (67-74), e quindi a Sikabaluan (74-82). Dopo una breve parentesi di attività pastorale a Padang, parroco della parrocchia di S. Francesco dall’82 all’85, ritornò alle Mentawai: prima a Sikabaluan (86-94), poi a Siberut (94-97).
L’attività di P. Tonino per i Metawaiani ha spaziato dalla cura pastorale alle iniziative di promozione umana: l’istruzione scolastica dei ragazzi; i collegamenti (barche, radiotelefono) tra le isole Mentawai e tra queste e Sumatra; la preparazione dei catechisti dei quali scriveva su Missionari Saveriani (Settembre 77): “Un villaggio senza catechista-animatore è un gregge senza pastore... una nidiata di pulcini a cui manca la chioccia. (L’esempio della chioccia piaceva anche a Gesù)”; l’informazione sulla vita delle isole assicurata da un mensile, pubblicato negli ultimi anni, nella lingua delle Mentawai.
Il Signore accolga nel suo Paradiso il P. Tonino che Lo ha servito per trentadue anni nei fratelli mentawaiani.

Fr. Tonino Caissutti died at 9:45 pm at the hospital of Padang on Jan. 12 1998 as result of high fevers incurred at Siberut (Mentawai), complicated by malaria, typhoid, bronchitis and liver complications. What followed was a heart attack on Jan. 7, from which he never recovered. He was organizing the ordination of the first Mentawaian Xaverian. Fr. Tonino was 61 years old, born at Sabaudia (Latina) on Sept. 24 1936.
Fr. Tonino entered the Xaverians in Udine in 1949 and continued his studies at Zelarino, S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate with Religious Profession on Sept. 12 1956, at Desio for three years, and then theology in Parma with Priesthood ordination on Oct. 25 1964. The formation years were difficult ones for Fr. Tonino, for he knew he had an impulsive, exuberant and critical character… “I know I have a long road ahead of me, but I have good will, which, together with Grace, will allow me to better myself.” (July 30 1955). He kept his word, sustained by a desire to improve himself and a persevering endurance, typical of the people from Friuli, thus reaching that human maturity he longed for.
At the age of 29, Fr. Tonino received his assignment to Indonesia, a land in which he spent the rest of his 32 years of life. He worked mainly in the Mentaway: at Sipora (1966-67), Siberut (1967-74) and Sikabaluan (1974-82). After a three-year period as parish priest in at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Padang (1982-85), he returned to the Mentawai at Sikabaluan (1986-94, and then at Siberut (1994-97).
He kept a diary of his work in the Mentaway, which is filled with details about the beginnings of the missionary activities there, the setbacks, the dangers, and the struggles. In it there are described the constant visits to the sick of the area, and the many times he was sick himself; the dangers of the winds and ways of the sea and of the rains in the forest; his passion for his own people, and for starting initiatives on behalf of them.
Fr. Tonino followed initiatives of human and Christian promotion: educations for children, improving the means of communication among the islands (through radios and boats), a monthly informational bulletin published in the local language, and the preparation of catechists and animators for the Christian communities: “A village without a catechists is like a flock without a shepherd… lots of chicks without mother-hen. And even Jesus loved the example of the mother-hen!” (In Missionari Saveriani, Sept. 1977)
He greatly supported the boarding schools in each of the four islands, in order to better prepare young people in their schooling, allowing them to move to further studies in Padang. He saw the school as a natural environment for Christian formation, too. In fact, during the regional Chapter of 1981, he said: “The schools of the Mentawai have been a blessing from the Lord, for they have allowed us to make known the Catholic religion to all.”
Fr. A. Geremia observed: “Tonino moved hastily with his confreres, with few words, always in a hurry, while he was extra patient with the people, giving them lots of time and listening to them so that he could understand their souls, their mentality, their problems.” He organized and supported the “Laggai Simaeru”, an organization which wanted to make know the Mentawai and defend its culture and environment. In the last years of his mission ministry, Fr. Tonino encouraged village chiefs and students to defend their rights in front of powerful companies who wanted to exploit their lands for the plantations of resin trees or palm oil trees.
He also worked in improving and incarnating the message of the Gospel in their liturgical settings. He said: “Our liturgies are very poor… They are reduced to standing, sitting, a few songs and lots of prayers which are said mechanically by the children. The adults are passive, because there is no rite which fully involves them.”
May the Lord welcome into Paradise our Fr. Tonino who served for 32 years the people of Mentawai.
