Venturini P. Pier Giorgio

Il 13 novembre 2014, a Parma intorno alle ore 19.00 si è spento il P. Pier Giorgio Venturini. Era vicino ai 72 anni, essendo nato a S. Pietro di Cavarzere (Venezia) il 19.11.1942.

Fu allievo del Seminario di Chioggia dalla Prima Media alla Prima Teologia (1954-1965). Gioviale e generoso, dagli anni di Liceo coltivò il desiderio «di seguire più da vicino il Divino Maestro, di ricambiare con il mio il suo grande amore per me e di darmi completamente per la conversione degli infedeli» (24.5.65); in dialogo con P. Gardini e P. Patacconi decise di diventare Saveriano: «uno dei migliori chierici –scriveva il Rettore del Seminario (9.9.65) – sui quali facevamo tanto affidamento, sotto tutti i punti di vista ... la diocesi dona un elemento molto buono alle missioni e lo fa con gioia».
Entrò all'Istituto a Nizza Monferrato nel 1965 per l’anno di Noviziato e il 3.10.1966 emise la Prima Professione. «Dotato di buona intelligenza, ottimo criterio pratico, buon equilibrio nel giudizio. Si impegna con generosità nel lavoro. Buona pietà e notevole impegno nell’esercizio della carità, dell’umiltà e della mortificazione» (20.8.66).
Completò gli studi teologici a Parma dove fu ordinato presbitero il 13.10.1968: «è nel numero dei migliori temperamenti della classe sotto tutti i punti di vista. Aiutato da un’intelligenza buona, oltre la normale, lo Spirito Santo ha fatto il resto sublimando le buone doti temperamentali. Ha esercitato un necessario/notevole influsso equilibratore. Può essere impiegato in vari uffici di responsabilità meritandosi tutta la fiducia» (Presentazione Ordini Maggiori).

Dopo l'ordinazione fu inviato per un triennio nel Regno Unito: a Cardross (69-70) per lo studio dell’inglese e con il compito di vicerettore della comunità; a Londra (70-72), Rettore della Teologia.
Nel ’72 fu destinato alla Sierra Leone, insegnante al St. Joseph College, Rettore del Seminario di Makeni e viceparroco. Dopo tre anni, per la sua salute i medici gli ordinarono un buon periodo di lontananza dai climi tropicali. I Superiori lo destinarono alla Gran Bretagna. P. Generale gli scrisse: «Non mi è difficile capire il tuo dispiacere e il disappunto della Comunità saveriana della Sierra Leone, anche perché conosco quanto eri stimato e apprezzato laggiù» (25.4.75).

Dal 1975 al 1990 appartenne alla Regione del Regno Unito. Fu uno dei protagonisti di quegli anni difficili per quella Circoscrizione, chiamata a definire le proprie finalità (studio lingua, specializzazioni, animazione missionaria e formazione) e a dotarsi di strutture adeguate. Proprio quando già soffiavano i venti della secolarizzazione. Fu formatore a Glasgow (75-76), formatore e Rettore della Teologia di Londra -Fincley (76-82), formatore a Coatbridge (82-84); Superiore Regionale (84-90).

Nel 1990 la Direzione Generale lo inviò nelle Filippine con l’incarico di iniziare la presenza saveriana in quel paese e di aprire una comunità teologica internazionale. «Una comunità cioè che doveva passare per il cammino della internazionalizzazione, cercato e voluto positivamente, non subito forzatamente. Una comunità che permettesse a tutti di esprimersi secondo la propria cultura e, per questo, caratterizzata dal dialogo, pazienza, tolleranza, flessibilità nelle cose non essenziali e capacità di riconciliazione» (Superiore Delegazione Centrale, 4.2.93). P. Piergiorgio ricoprì l’incarico di Rettore e formatore nella nuova realtà saveriana (dal 91 al 99), e dal 95 al 97 fu il primo Superiore della Delegazione delle Filippine.

Nel 1999 – era decisamente stanco – gli fu concesso un anno sabatico, di aggiornamento, al Collegio Conforti. Nel 2000, quando gli fu chiesto di mettere a disposizione della Regione italiana la sua capacità di relazione con le persone, la lunga esperienza di formazione e di internazionalità, rispose al Superiore Regionale: «Vengo volentieri ...». Volentieri offrì il suo servizio di Rettore della teologia di Parma (2000-2005), di Vice maestro ad Ancona (05-11) e affrontò il calvario del parkinsonismo (Parma 11-14).

Sempre coerente con il suo ideale missionario: «La missione – scriveva sul Settimanale della diocesi di Chioggia, Nuova Scintilla, 7.5. 2000 - ti coinvolge totalmente; la missione è un modo di essere; missione è permettere che altri disturbino i tuoi sonni; è scegliere l’emarginato; essere solidale con i nuovi poveri».

FR. PIERGIORGIO VENTURINI

Fr. Pier Giorgio Venturini died in the Mother House on 13 November 2014. Born in S. Pietro di Cavarzere (Venice, Italy) on 19 November 1942, he was 71 years old.

He studied at the Seminary of Chioggia from the first year of high school until the first year of Theology (1954-1965). A jovial and generous young man, he cultivated the desire «to follow the Divine Master more closely, to show him the great love he has shown me and to give myself completely for the conversion of non-believers» (24.5.65) and, in dialogue with Frs. Gardini and Patacconi, he decided to become a Xaverian. On 9 September 1965, the seminary rector wrote: «he is one of our best seminarians and we can vouch for him in every way ... the diocese is giving a very good candidate to the missions and it does so with joy».

He joined the Institute at Nizza Monferrato in 1965 for Novitiate and made his First Profession on 3 October 1966. «Endowed with good intentions and common sense, he makes sound and balanced judgments. He is generous in his commitment to work. His piety is good and he is very committed in the exercise of charity, humility and mortification» (20.8.66).

He completed his theology studies in Parma and he was ordained priest there on 13 October 1968. The report presenting him for Major Orders said: «He is one of the best members of the class in every way. He is very intelligent and the Holy Spirit has endowed him with a good temperament. He has achieved a good balance in his personality. He can be trusted with tasks of responsibility».

After his ordination he was sent to the United Kingdom for three years: he studied English and served as vice- rector of the Cardross community (1969-70), and was appointed Rector of the London Theology community (1970-72).
He was assigned to the mission of Sierra Leone in 1972, where he taught at St. Joseph College, served as Rector of the Makeni Seminary and worked as assistant priest in the parish. After three years, his health led doctors to prescribe a period of time far from the tropical climate. The Superiors assigned him to the United Kingdom and the Superior General wrote to him: «It is not difficult for me to understand your sadness, and the disappointment of the Xaverian Community in Sierra Leone, because I know how much they appreciate you there» (25.4.75).

He worked in the United Kingdom from 1975 until 1990. He played a leading role in what were difficult years for the Circumscription, which had to define its goals (language study, specializations, missionary animation and formation) and to provide adequate structures for them just as the winds of secularization were blowing. He served as a formator in Glasgow (1975-76), formator and Theology Rector in London - Finchley (1976-82), formator in Coatbridge (1982-84) and Regional Superior (1984-90).

In 1990 the General Direction assigned him to the Philippines with the task of beginning the Xaverian presence and opening an international theology community. In a letter dated 4 February 1993, the Superior of the Central Delegation wrote: «The community must strive for a positively desired, and not passively endured, internationalization; a community that will enable all its members to express themselves according to their own culture, through dialogue, patience, tolerance, flexibility in non-essential things and open to reconciliation». Fr. Piergiorgio served as Rector and formator in the new Xaverian community from 1991 until 1999. From 1995 until 1997 he was the first Superior of the Delegation of the Philippines.

In 1999 he was very tired and was granted a sabbatical year for aggiornamento in the Collegio Conforti in Rome. In 2000 he was asked to serve the Italian Region with his interpersonal skills and lengthy experience of formation and internationality and he willingly accepted this new assignment. He served the Region as Rector of the Theology in Parma (2000-2005), vice-novice master in Ancona (2005-11): In the last three years of his life he bore the cross of Parkinson’s disease in Parma.
Fr. Piergiorgio was always consistent with his missionary ideal: On 7 May 2000, he wrote in the weekly magazine of the Chioggia diocese Nuova Scintilla: «The mission involves you totally; it is a way of being; mission means allowing others to disturb your sleep; it means to choose the marginalized and live in solidarity with the new poor».
