San Giuseppe, modello del Fratello Saveriano.
La figura di San Giuseppe, nella famiglia saveriana, ha sempre ispirato la vocazione del fratello, diventando il Santo protettore di questa vocazione.
San Giuseppe tradizionalmente è presentato come uomo di poche parole, persona mistica e di fede profonda. Ma soprattutto, San Giuseppe è persona “giusta”, cioè attenta a compiere la volontà del Signore. Attenta alle sofferenze e difficoltà delle altre persone.
Se diamo uno sguardo alla storia, la vita religiosa nasce come vita religiosa laicale, cioè come vita religiosa di fratelli e di sorelle. Dal V secolo fino ai nostri giorni, sorgono numerosi fondatori di Istituti Religiosi di fratelli e di sorelle.
All’interno della famiglia religiosa, e quindi anche di quella saveriana, la vocazione del fratello ha una sua specificità e non è un’alternativa al sacerdozio, ma è parte essenziale della vita familiare. La figura del fratello indica propriamente che ogni vocazione nasce per servire gli altri e non se stessi, per il prestigio personale o per godere di altri privilegi.
Nella vocazione del fratello troviamo un aspetto importante, che è quello appunto della fraternità. La fraternità sarà poi il dono che il fratello condivide con gli altri, sentiti tutti come fratelli.
Potremmo qui ricordare tanti fratelli saveriani, che nel silenzio e nella dedizione si sono prodigati – anche con la loro professionalità – a vivere questa fraternità nei confronti dei più piccoli, dei più umili, degli oppressi, dei non amati.
La fraternità è dono che il fratello offre al mondo.
Per San Giuseppe, modello del fratello saveriano, la virtù del servizio è resa possibile dall’obbedienza. San Giuseppe è obbediente, e per questo diviene modello per tutti i battezzati:
“L’atteggiamento fondamentale di tutta la Chiesa deve essere quello del ‘religioso ascolto della Parola di Dio’, ossia dell’assoluta disponibilità a servire fedelmente la volontà salvifica di Dio, rivelata in Gesù. Già all’inizio della redenzione umana troviamo incarnato il modello dell’obbedienza, dopo Maria, proprio in Giuseppe, colui che si distingue per la fedele esecuzione dei comandi di Dio. […] (La Chiesa) ricordando che Dio ha affidato gli inizi della nostra redenzione alla custodia premurosa di san Giuseppe, gli chiede di concederle di collaborare fedelmente all’opera di salvezza” (Redentoris Custos 30-31).
Chiediamo quindi a San Giuseppe che ci aiuti a riscoprire la bella vocazione del fratello e di poterla trasmettere ai futuri aspiranti come servizio ai fratelli e al mondo intero.
St. Joseph, model for the Xaverian Brother
The figure of St. Joseph has always inspired the vocation of the Xaverian Brother and he is looked upon as their Patron saint.
Traditionally, he has been presented as a man of few words, a mystical person of profound faith. Above all, he was a “just” man, who always fulfilled God’s will and was attentive to the suffering and difficulties of other people.
If we take a look at history, religious life was born as a lay religious life; in other words, a religious life of brothers and sisters. From the 5th century until our own times, many founders have established Religious Institutes of brothers and sisters.
Within the religious family, and therefore also within our Xaverian Family, the vocation of the Brother has its own specific nature; it is not an alternative to the priesthood, but an essential part of family life. The figure of the Brother tells us that every vocation is born to serve others and not the self, personal prestige or to obtain other privileges.
Fraternity is an important aspect of the Brother’s vocation. Fraternity is the gift that the Brother shares with all the others, who are looked upon as brothers.
We could remember here many Xaverian Brothers who, in silence and dedication, did their utmost (also through their professionalism) to live this fraternity with the most humble, oppressed and unloved people.
Fraternity is a gift that the Brother offers to the world.
For St. Joseph, the model of the Xaverian Brother, the virtue of service was made possible by obedience. St. Joseph was obedient and therefore is a model for all the baptized:
“The basic attitude of the entire Church must be that of "hearing the word of God with reverence,"(46) an absolute readiness to serve faithfully God's salvific will revealed in Jesus. Already at the beginning of human redemption, after Mary, we find the model of obedience made incarnate in St. Joseph, the man known for having faithfully carried out God's commands.. […] (The Church) recalling that God wished to entrust the beginnings of our redemption to the faithful care of St. Joseph, she asks God to grant that she may faithfully cooperate in the work of salvation” (Redemptoris Custos 30-31).
Let us therefore ask St. Joseph to help us to rediscover the beautiful vocation of the Brother and transmit it to future aspirants as a service to the brothers and to the entire world.
