Carissimi confratelli,

abbiamo appena iniziato il tempo di quaresima, periodo liturgico che precede la celebrazione della Pasqua, cioè della passione, morte e risurrezione del Signore Gesù, nucleo e fondamento della nostra fede cristiana.

La Chiesa ci invita a vivere questo tempo liturgico con fede e intensità, lasciandoci guidare da Dio stesso e dalla sua Parola. Abbiamo incominciato con un gesto molto semplice, l’imposizione delle ceneri, e con una parola che lo ha accompagnato: “Convertiti e credi nel Vangelo”. Le ceneri ci ricordano la fragilità umana. Alla fine della nostra vita, anche se abbiamo avuto dei grandi titoli o degli incarichi e responsabilità importanti, torniamo a essere polvere. La cremazione di uno dei nostri confratelli deceduto recentemente mi ha fatto molta impressione. Vedere una cassetta chiusa con il suo nome e dentro quello che è rimasto, le sue ceneri, impressiona. E vengono fuori tante domande: cosa siamo, perché viviamo, verso dove andiamo, cosa rimane alla fine della nostra vita … 

Ma noi crediamo che questa realtà umana così fragile, non è stata abbandonata al suo destino, né è rimasta sola. Dietro c’è Lui, Dio, la sua Parola, e con Lui l’invito ad accogliere gioiosamente il cammino della Vita: “Convertiti e credi nel Vangelo”. La settimana scorsa c’è stata una parola del Vangelo che mi ha particolarmente colpito. Si tratta del dialogo fra Gesù e un gruppo di farisei sulla questione del matrimonio e del divorzio. A coloro che dicevano che “Mosè ha permesso di mandar via la moglie, dopo averle dato una dichiarazione scritta di divorzio”, Gesù rispose: “Mosè ha scritto questa parola perché voi avete il cuore duro. Ma al principio, al tempo della creazione, come dice la Bibbia, Dio maschio e femmina li creò … Perciò l’uomo non separi ciò che Dio ha unito” (cfr. Mc, 10,3-9).

In questa Parola ho visto subito un pericolo molto grande ma che allo stesso tempo può passare inosservato, quasi inoffensivo e del tutto naturale: voler adattare, il più delle volte senza rendersene conto, la grandezza e bellezza della Parola di Dio alle esigenze personali narcisistiche e capricciose, proprie di chi pensa talmente in sé stesso che dimentica Dio; anzi nel fondo del suo cuore desidera che Dio si adatti a lui. È una perversione spirituale!

Il tempo di quaresima è un invito profondo a spogliarsi davanti al Signore, se abbiamo il coraggio e la consapevolezza di farlo, a togliere quelle maschere che portiamo nella nostra vita quotidiana e che coprono la nostra nudità. Mettersi davanti al Signore così come siamo e lasciarci amare da Lui soprattutto in quelle tendenze negative e autodistruttive che sono diventate abiti quotidiani nella nostra vita. “Perciò liberatevi da tutto ciò che è sporco e cattivo. Siate pronti ad accogliere quella parola che Dio fa crescere nel vostro cuore e che ha il potere di portarvi alla salvezza” (Gc 1,21). È l’invito imperativo che alcuni giorni fa abbiamo ascoltato nella lettera di Giacomo.

Coltivare nel nostro cuore il desiderio di Dio, della sua Parola. Abbiamo bisogno di Dio perché è Lui la nostra salvezza, non ce n’è un altro! Bisogna dirlo ad alta voce. “Non ingannatevi voi stessi: non accontentatevi di ascoltare la parola di Dio: mettetela anche in pratica” (Gc 1,22). Ci vuole un esercizio personale quotidiano fatto di attenzione, di osservazione, di volontà, di desiderio profondo di assomigliare a Dio e … molta umiltà. “Perciò la vostra mente sia pronta ad agire; rimanete ben svegli. Tutta la vostra speranza sia rivolta verso quel dono di grazia che riceverete da Cristo Gesù. Come figli ubbidienti non seguite più i desideri di un tempo, quando eravate nell’ignoranza. Di fronte al Dio santo che vi ha chiamati, anche voi siate santi in tutto quello che fate” (1 Pt 1,13-15).

Non stanchiamoci di fare il bene. Con queste parole dell’apostolo Paolo, che sono servite d’ispirazione a papa Francesco per il suo messaggio di Quaresima di quest’anno e che invito, se non lo avete ancora fatto, a leggere e meditare, desidero ad ognuno di voi un buon cammino quaresimale.

Che lo Spirito Santo guidi e modelli i nostri pensieri, parole, azioni e sentimenti.

Lenten Message 2022

Dear confreres,

We have just begun the season of Lent, the liturgical time that precedes the celebration of Easter: the passion, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, core, and foundation of our Christian faith.

The Church invites us to live this liturgical season with faith and passion, allowing us to be guided by God and His Word. We have begun with a very simple gesture, the imposition of ashes, and with a word that accompanied it: "Repent and believe in the Gospel." The ashes remind us of human frailty. At the end of our lives, even if we have had big titles or important assignments and responsibilities, we return to dust. The cremation of one of our recently deceased confreres made a deep impression on me. Seeing a closed urn with his name, containing what was left, his ashes makes an impression. And many questions come up: what are we, why do we live, where are we going, what remains at the end of our lives? 

Nonetheless, we believe that this human reality, so fragile, has not been abandoned to its fate, nor has it been left alone. Behind there is God, His Word, and with Him the invitation to joyfully accept Life's journey: "Repent and believe in the Gospel." Last week a phrase from the Gospel struck me in a particular way. It is the dialogue between Jesus and a group of Pharisees on the issue of marriage and divorce. To those who said that "Moses permitted a man to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." Jesus replied, "Because of the hardness of your hearts, Moses wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female… Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate."  (Mk 10:3-9)

In this Word, I immediately saw a very great danger, but one that at the same time can go unnoticed, almost harmless and completely natural: wanting to adapt, most of the time without realizing it, the greatness and beauty of the Word of God to the narcissistic and capricious personal wants of those who think so much of themselves and forget God; indeed, in the depths of their heart they desire that God adapts Himself to them. It is a spiritual travesty!

The time of Lent is a profound invitation to undress before the Lord if we have the courage and the awareness to do so. To remove those masks that we wear in our daily lives covering our nakedness. To place ourselves before the Lord as we are and allow ourselves to be loved by Him, especially in those negative and self-destructive inclinations that have become daily habits in our lives. "Therefore, put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls." (Jm 1:21) This is the urgent invitation we heard a few days ago through James's Letter.

Cultivate in our hearts the desire for God, for his Word. We need God because He is our salvation; there is no other! It must be said loudly. "Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves." (Jm 1:22) It takes a daily personal exercise of attention, observation, willingness, a deep desire to be like God, and ... much humility. "Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly, and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Like obedient children, do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct…" (1 Pt 1:13-15)

Let us not grow tired of doing good. With these words by the Apostle Paul, which serve as inspiration to Pope Francis' 2022 Lenten message and which I invite you, if you have not already done so, to read and meditate on, I wish you a good Lenten journey.

May the Holy Spirit guide and shape our thoughts, words, actions, and feelings.

Mensaje de Cuaresma 2022

Muy queridos hermanos,

Acabamos de iniciar el tiempo de Cuaresma, período litúrgico que precede la celebración de la Pascua, es decir, de la pasión, muerte y resurrección del Señor Jesús, núcleo y fundamento de nuestra fe cristiana.

La Iglesia nos invita a vivir este tiempo litúrgico con fe e intensidad, dejándonos guiar por Dios mismo y por su Palabra. Hemos comenzado con un gesto muy sencillo, la imposición de la ceniza, y con una palabra que le acompañaba: “Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio”. Las cenizas nos recuerdan la fragilidad humana. Al final de nuestra vida, aunque hayamos tenido grandes títulos o importantes tareas y responsabilidades, volvemos al polvo. Recientemente, la incineración de uno de nuestros hermanos fallecidos me impresionó profundamente. Ver un pequeño contenedor cerrado, con su nombre, y dentro de él lo que queda, sus cenizas… impresiona. Surgen muchas preguntas: ¿qué somos, por qué vivimos, hacia dónde vamos? ¿Qué queda al final de nuestras vidas? 

Pero nosotros creemos que esta realidad humana, tan frágil, no ha sido abandonada a su suerte, ni está sola. Detrás está Él, Dios, su Palabra, y con Él la invitación a aceptar gozosamente el camino de la Vida: “Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio”. La semana pasada hubo una palabra del Evangelio que me impactó particularmente. Se trata del diálogo entre Jesús y un grupo de fariseos sobre la cuestión del matrimonio y el divorcio. A los que decían que “Moisés permitió que su mujer fuera despedida después de haberle dado una declaración de divorcio por escrito”, Jesús les contestó: “Moisés escribió esta palabra porque vosotros tenéis el corazón duro. Pero al principio, al tiempo de la creación, como dice la Biblia, Dios los creó hombre y mujer... Por tanto, que nadie separe lo que Dios ha unido” (cfr. Mc 10,3-9).

En esta Palabra observé inmediatamente un peligro muy grande, pero que, igual, puede pasar desapercibido, casi inofensivo y completamente natural: querer adaptar, la mayoría de las veces sin darse cuenta, la grandeza y la belleza de la Palabra de Dios, a las necesidades personales narcisistas y caprichosas de quienes piensan tanto en sí mismos que se olvidan de Dios; es más, en el fondo de su corazón quieren que Dios se adapte a ellos. ¡Esto es una perversión espiritual!

El tiempo de Cuaresma es una profunda invitación a desnudarnos ante el Señor, si tenemos el valor y la conciencia de hacerlo, para quitarnos esas máscaras que llevamos en nuestra vida cotidiana y que cubren nuestra desnudez. Ponernos ante el Señor tal y como somos y dejarnos amar por Él sobre todo en aquellas tendencias negativas y autodestructivas que se han convertido en hábitos cotidianos en nuestra vida. “Por lo tanto, despojaos de todo lo que es sucio y malo. Estad dispuestos a acoger la palabra que Dios hace crecer en vuestro corazón y que tiene el poder de salvaros” (Sant 1,21). Esta es la invitación imperativa que escuchamos hace unos días en la carta de Santiago.

Cultivar en nuestros corazones el deseo de Dios, de su Palabra. Necesitamos a Dios porque Él es nuestra salvación, ¡no hay otro! Hay que decirlo en voz alta. “No os engañéis: no os contentéis con oír la palabra de Dios: ponedla en práctica” (Sant 1,22). Requiere un ejercicio personal diario de atención, de observación, de voluntad, de un profundo deseo de asemejarnos a Dios y… mucha humildad. “Por lo tanto, deja que tu mente esté lista para actuar; mantente bien despierto. Que toda vuestra esperanza se dirija a ese don de gracia que recibiréis de Cristo Jesús. Como hijos obedientes, no sigáis más los deseos del pasado, cuando estabais en la ignorancia. Ante el Dios santo que os ha llamado, sed también vosotros santos en todo lo que hagáis” (1Pe 1,13-15).

No nos cansemos de hacer el bien. Con estas palabras del apóstol Pablo, que sirven de inspiración al Papa Francisco para su mensaje de Cuaresma de este año y que os invito a leer y meditar, si no lo habéis hecho ya, os deseo a cada uno un buen camino cuaresmal.

Que el Espíritu Santo guíe y moldee nuestros pensamientos, palabras, acciones y sentimientos.

Message Carême 2022 

Très chers confrères,

Nous venons de commencer le temps de carême, période liturgique qui précède la célébration de la Pâques, c’est-à-dire de la passion, de la mort et de la résurrection du Seigneur Jésus, noyau et fondement de notre foi chrétienne.

L’Eglise nous invite à vivre ce temps liturgique avec foi et intensité, en nous laissant guider par Dieu lui-même et par sa Parole. Nous avons commencé par un geste très simple, l’imposition des cendres, et par un mot qui l’a accompagné : « Convertis-toi et crois à l’Evangile ». Les cendres nous rappellent la fragilité humaine. À la fin de nos vies, même si nous avons eu de grands titres ou des tâches et des responsabilités importantes, nous redevenons poussière. L’incinération d’un de nos confrères récemment décédé m’a fait réfléchir. Voir une petite boite fermée, portant son nom et à l’intérieur ce qui reste, ses cendres, fait réfléchir. Et on se pose beaucoup de questions : que sommes-nous, pourquoi vivons-nous, vers où allons-nous, qu’est-ce qui reste à la fin de notre vie ...

Mais nous nous croyons que cette réalité humaine si fragile n’a pas été abandonnée à son propre destin, ni n’est restée seule. Derrière, il y a Lui, Dieu, sa Parole, et avec Lui, l’invitation à accueillir joyeusement le chemin de la Vie : "Convertis-toi et crois à l’Evangile". La semaine dernière, il y a eu une parole de l’Évangile qui m’a particulièrement frappé. Il s’agit du dialogue entre Jésus et un groupe de pharisiens sur la question du mariage et du divorce. A ceux qui disaient que « Moïse a permis d'écrire un certificat de répudiation et de renvoyer sa femme », Jésus répondit : « C'est à cause de la dureté de votre cœur qu'il a écrit pour vous ce commandement. Mais au commencement du monde, Dieu les fit mâle et femelle ; … Que l'homme donc ne sépare pas ce que Dieu a uni » (cf. Mc, 10, 3-9).

Dans cette Parole j’ai vu tout de suite un danger très grand mais qui en même temps peut passer inaperçu, presque inoffensif et tout à fait naturel : vouloir adapter, le plus souvent sans s’en rendre compte, la grandeur et la beauté de la Parole de Dieu aux exigences personnelles narcissiques et capricieuses, propres à celui qui pense tellement à lui-même au point d’oublier Dieu ; au fond de son cœur, il désire que Dieu s’adapte à lui. C’est une perversion spirituelle !

Le temps de carême est une invitation profonde à se déshabiller devant le Seigneur, si nous avons le courage et la conscience de le faire, à ôter ces masques que nous portons dans notre vie quotidienne et qui couvrent notre nudité. Se placer devant le Seigneur tel que nous sommes et nous laisser aimer par Lui surtout dans ces tendances négatives et autodestructrices qui sont devenues des vêtements quotidiens dans notre vie. « Aussi, débarrassés de toute souillure et de tout débordement de méchanceté, accueillez avec douceur la parole plantée en vous et capable de vous sauver la vie » (Jc 1, 21). C’est l’invitation impérative que nous avons écoutée il y a quelques jours dans la lettre de Jacques.

Cultiver dans notre cœur le désir de Dieu, de sa Parole. Nous avons besoin de Dieu parce que c’est Lui notre salut, il n’y en a pas d’autre ! Il faut le dire à haute voix. « Mais soyez les réalisateurs de la parole, et pas seulement des auditeurs qui s'abuseraient eux-mêmes » (Jc 1, 22). Il faut un exercice personnel et au quotidien fait d’attention, d’observation, de volonté, de désir profond de ressembler à Dieu et... beaucoup d’humilité. « C'est pourquoi, l'esprit éveillé pour les discernements nécessaires, mettez toute votre espérance dans la grâce qui doit vous être accordée lors de la révélation de Jésus Christ. Comme des enfants obéissants, ne vous conformez pas aux convoitises d'autrefois, du temps de votre ignorance ; mais, de même que celui qui vous a appelés est saint, vous aussi devenez saints dans toute votre conduite, … » (1 P 1, 13-15).

Ne nous lassons pas de faire le bien. Avec ces paroles de l’Apôtre Paul, qui servent d’inspiration au Pape François pour son message de Carême de cette année et que j’invite, si vous ne l’avez pas encore fait, à lire et à méditer, je souhaite à chacun de vous un bon chemin de Carême.

Que l’Esprit Saint guide et modèle nos pensées, nos paroles, nos actions et nos sentiments.

Pesan Prapaskah 2022

Para konfrater terkasih,

kita baru saja memulai masa Prapaskah, masa liturgi yang mendahului perayaan Paskah, yaitu sengsara, wafat dan kebangkitan Tuhan Yesus, inti dan dasar iman Kristen kita.

Gereja mengundang kita untuk menjalani masa liturgi ini dengan iman dan intensitas, membiarkan diri kita dibimbing oleh Allah sendiri dan Sabda-Nya. Kita mulai dengan gerakan yang sangat sederhana, penerimaan abu, dan dengan kata yang menyertainya: “Bertobatlah dan percayalah kepada Injil”. Abu mengingatkan kita akan kelemahan manusia. Di akhir hidup kita, meskipun kita telah memiliki gelar besar atau posisi dan tanggung jawab penting, kita kembali menjadi debu. Kremasi atas salah satu konfrater kita yang baru saja meninggal memberikan kesan yang luar biasa bagi saya. Melihat laci tertutup dengan namanya dan apa yang tersisa di dalamnya, abunya, sangat mengesankan. Dan banyak pertanyaan muncul: siapa kita, mengapa kita hidup, ke mana kita pergi, apa yang tersisa di akhir hidup kita ...

Tetapi kita percaya bahwa realitas manusia yang begitu rapuh ini tidak ditinggalkan begitu saja, juga tidak dibiarkan begitu saja. Di belakangnya ada Dia, Tuhan, Sabda-Nya, dan bersamaNya ada ajakan untuk menyambut perjalanan Hidup dengan sukacita: “Bertobatlah dan percayalah kepada Injil”. Minggu lalu ada sebuah kata dari Injil yang sangat mengejutkan saya. Ini tentang dialog antara Yesus dan sekelompok orang Farisi tentang masalah pernikahan dan perceraian. Kepada mereka yang mengatakan bahwa ”Musa memberi izin untuk menceraikannya dengan membuat surat cerai”, Yesus menjawab, ”Justru karena ketegaran hatimulah maka Musa menuliskan perintah perintah ini untuk kamu. Sebab pada awal dunia, Allah menjadikan mereka laki-laki dan perempuan... Karena itu, apa yang telah dipersatukan Allah, tidak boleh diceraikan manusia.” (bdk. Mrk 10: 3-9).

Dalam Firman ini saya segera melihat bahaya yang sangat besar tetapi pada saat yang sama dapat luput dari perhatian, hampir tidak berbahaya dan sepenuhnya alami: ingin menyesuaikan, sangat sering tanpa menyadarinya, kebesaran dan keindahan Firman Tuhan untuk kebutuhan pribadi yang narsistik dan berubah-ubah, tipikal mereka yang terlalu memikirkan diri sendiri sehingga mereka melupakan Tuhan; memang dalam lubuk hatinya ia ingin Tuhan menyesuaikan diri dengan dirinya. Ini adalah penyimpangan spiritual!

Masa Prapaskah adalah undangan yang mendalam untuk menelanjangi diri di hadapan Tuhan, jika kita memiliki keberanian dan kesadaran untuk melakukannya, untuk melepaskan topeng yang kita pakai dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dan yang menutupi ketelanjangan kita. Menempatkan diri kita di hadapan Tuhan apa adanya dan membiarkan diri kita dicintai oleh-Nya terutama dalam kecenderungan negatif dan merusak diri sendiri yang telah menjadi kebiasaan sehari-hari dalam hidup kita. “Sebab itu buanglah segala sesuatu yang kotor dan kejahatan yang begitu banyak itu dan terimalah dengan lemah lembut firman yang tertanam di dalam hatimu, yang berkuasa menyelamatkan jiwamu” (Yak 1:21). Ini adalah undangan penting yang kita dengar beberapa hari yang lalu dalam surat Yakobus.

Tanamkan dalam hati kita keinginan akan Tuhan, akan Firman-Nya. Kita membutuhkan Tuhan karena Dia adalah keselamatan kita, tidak ada yang lain! Itu harus diucapkan dengan lantang. “Jangan menipu dirimu sendiri: jangan puas dengan mendengarkan firman Tuhan: lakukanlah” (Yak 1:22). Dibutuhkan latihan pribadi setiap hari yang terdiri dari perhatian, pengamatan, kemauan, keinginan yang mendalam untuk menjadi seperti Tuhan dan… banyak kerendahan hati. “Sebab itu siapkanlah akal budimu, waspadalah dan letakkanlah pengharapanmu seluruhnya atas kasih karunia yang dianugerahkan kepadamu pada waktu penyataan Yesus Kristus. Hiduplah sebagai anak-anak yang taat dan jangan turuti hawa nafsu yang menguasai kamu pada waktu kebodohanmu, tetapi hendaklah kamu menjadi kudus di dalam seluruh hidupmu sama seperti Dia yang kudus, yang telah memanggil kamu” (1 Pt 1,13-15).

Jangan sampai kita lelah berbuat baik. Dengan kata-kata rasul Paulus ini, yang menjadi inspirasi bagi Paus Fransiskus untuk pesan Prapaskahnya tahun ini dan yang saya undang Anda, jika Anda belum melakukannya, untuk membaca dan merenungkannya, saya berharap Anda masing-masing menjalani perjalanan Prapaskah yang baik. . Semoga Roh Kudus membimbing dan membentuk pikiran, perkataan, tindakan, dan perasaan kita.
