A Parma, in Casa Madre, l’11 maggio 2012 alle 13.00 è morto per insufficienza cardiaca il P. Angelo Calvi. In novembre avrebbe compiuto 92 anni, essendo nato a Corte de’ Frati (Cremona) il 24 novembre 1919.
P. Calvi entrò tra i Saveriani il 5.9.1935. L’iniziativa in questo iniziale orientamento vocazionale fu del suo parroco il quale scrisse a P. Spinabelli, Rettore a Grumone: «Le raccomando con tutto il cuore il giovanetto Calvi Angelo perché possa essere accettato in codesto Istituto. Posso testimoniare con sicura coscienza della sua ottima pietà, della sua buona volontà e condotta. Credo che dopo poco tempo di prova mi si darà piena ragione» (20.8.35). Fu accolto nella casa di Vicenza (35-36) per la terza media; passò poi, di seguito, a Grumone (36-38) Ginnasio superiore; S. Pietro in Vincoli (38-39) Noviziato e Prima Professione il 3.10.39; Parma (39-42) Liceo; Massa della Lucania (42-45) Prefettato e I e II Teologia (studi compiuti privatamente e successivamente convalidati); Parma (45-47) III e IV Teologia. Ricevette l’ Ordinazione presbiterale il 1° marzo 1947.
Dopo l’ordinazione, per cinque anni prestò il suo servizio in comunità italiane, Vicerettore a Poggio S. Marcello e a Grumone, animatore missionario e successivamente economo a Piacenza e poi incaricato della diffusione della stampa missionaria allo CSAM di Parma. Tempi tutt’altro che facili dal punto di vista economico: erano gli anni del dopoguerra, della ricostruzione. La disponibilità per la solidarietà era limitata; quello dell’economo era un servizio particolarmente impegnativo.
Nel 1954 fu destinato all’Indonesia. Vi andò con il fratello P. Piero. Lavorò alle Isole Mentawai, dal 54 al 57 a Siberut e dal 57 al 63 a Sikakap. Anche per il P. Angelo il servizio missionario alle Mentawai offrì grandi soddisfazioni ma a prezzo di un grosso impegno di adattamento. Scriveva al P. Generale il 27.7.57: «I risultati sono consolanti, sentiamo però tremendamente la mancanza di altre forze che vengano in aiuto. Il campo è promettente, ma ci è praticamente impossibile spostarci da un posto all’altro per la mancanza assoluta di strade. Per la mancanza di mezzi sicuri, risulta difficile passare da un’isola all’altra». «Se avessimo qualche opera già in funzione… I protestanti hanno il loro centro a Sikakap e sono attrattivi perché ben attrezzati» (7.12.60).
Quello che più gli pesava era la solitudine: «a me quell’isolamento così terribile mi spacca i nervi. Spero di essere cambiato il prossimo anno» (3.12.58). Il cambio avvenne nel 63 quando fu fatto parroco de Pekambaru nell'isola di Sumatra dove la missione aveva avuto grandi sviluppi.
Nel 1965 P. Calvi venne chiamato in Italia e destinato come aiuto alla Procura delle Missioni (66-69) e poi economo della Casa Madre (69-77). Dal 77 all'83 fu Rettore della comunità di Genova-Pegli che era costituita da padri anziani. Dall'83 al 2011 visse a Tavernerio, come Rettore (83-89), come Economo (89-95), addetto al ministero (95-2011).
Verso la metà di dicembre del 2011, per problemi di salute, fu portato alla Casa Madre dove passò i suoi ultimi mesi di vita, soffrendo in silenzio e in piena serenità.
P. Angelo Calvi «si è distinto per bontà d’animo, per un tratto gentile che attirava le simpatie, per un amore intenso verso la nostra famiglia religiosa e per uno zelo che lo rendeva sempre pronto ad ogni ministero e a ogni fatica. È vissuto accanto ai confratelli con amabilità, senza pretendere, anzi fuggendo ciò che lo potesse mettere in mostra» (P. Luca, 14.5.12).
«Ho sempre amato tanto la Congregazione – si legge in una lettera del 1983 - e ben volentieri cerco di lavorare e di fare del mio meglio nei compiti che i Superiori credono opportuno affidarmi. Credo fermamente che la Congregazione si può servire sempre, con eguale entusiasmo, in qualsiasi incombenza piccola o grande che sia».

Fr. Angelo Calvi died of heart failure in the Mother House, Parma, on 11 May 2012, six months short of his 92nd birth day (he was born in Corte de’ Frati, Cremona, Italy, on 24 November 1919.
Fr. Calvi joined the Xaverians on 5 September 1935. The initiative for this initial vocational orientation came from his parish priest, who wrote to Fr. Spinabelli, the Rector at Grumone: «I warmly recommend Angelo Calvi to you for admission to your Institute. I can safely certify that he possesses an excellent piety, good will and good conduct. I believe that you will see I am right after a short period of probation » (20.8.35).
He was received into the house of Vicenza (1935-36) for the third year of junior high school; he later moved to Grumone (1936-38) for senior high school; to S. Pietro in Vincoli (1938-39) for Novitiate and the First Profession on 3 October 1939; to Parma (1939-42) for the Lyceum; to Massa della Lucania (1942-45) as prefect and the first two years of Theology (these studies were done privately and later validated); to Parma (1945-47) for the 3rd and 4th years of Theology. He was ordained priest on 1 March 1947.
After his ordination, he spent five years in different communities in Italy: Vice-rector at Poggio S. Marcello and Grumone; missionary animator and, later, treasurer at Piacenza; he was then put in charge of the missionary press at the CSAM in Parma. These were the post-war years and times of financial hardship, which made the task of treasurer especially difficult since people had little money for solidarity purposes.
In 1954 he was assigned to Indonesia and he went there with his brother, Fr. Piero. In the period 1954-63, he worked on the Mentawai is lands (1954-57 at Siberut and 1957-63 at Sikakap). The missionary work on the islands gave him great satisfaction, but he had to make great efforts to adapt to the situation. He wrote to the Superior General on 27 July 1957: «The results are consoling, but we stand in great need of more personnel to help us. The field is promising, but the lack of roads means it is practically impossible for us to move from one place to another. The lack of secure means of transport also makes it difficult to travel from one island to another». «If we had some project already up and running … The Protestants have their center at Sikakap and they attract people because they are well equipped » (7.12.60).
His greatest problem was loneliness: «that terrible isolation unnerved me. I hope I will be transferred next year» (3.12.58). The transfer came in 1963 when he was appointed parish priest of Pekambaru, on the island of Sumatra, where the mission had enjoyed a great development.
In 1965 Fr. Calvi returned to Italy and was assigned as assistant at the Mission Procura (1966-69) then treasurer at the Mother House (1969-77). From 1977 until 1983 he was Rector of the community of Genoa-Pegli, which was made up of elderly fathers. From 1983 un til 2011 he lived in Tavernerio, as Rector (1983-89), as treasurer (89-95), and engaged in ministry (1995-2011). Towards the middle of December 2011, health problems forced him to move to the Mother House, where he spent the last few months of his life, suffering in silence and total serenity.
Fr. Angelo Calvi «stood out for his good heart and his gentleness, which attracted people to him; he had an intense love for our religious family and a zeal that found him always ready for any ministry and work. He was pleasant to live with and shunned anything that might put him in the lime light » (Fr. Luca, 14.5.12).
In a letter dated 1983, he wrote: «I have always had a great love for the Congregation and I have always done my best to carry out the tasks entrusted to me by the Superiors. I firmly believe that we can always serve the Congregation with equal enthusiasm in whatever task, great or small».
