Il P. Vincenzo Capra era nato a Fosseto S. Salvatore Monferrato (AL) il 28.VIII. 1899. Ultimati gli studi medi presso i Salesiani, si impiegava nelle Ferrovie dello Stato. Durante la prima Guerra mondiale prestò servizio militare nel Genio Telegrafisti, prima in patria poi in Albania. Congedato, a 22 anni, nell'ottobre 1921, entrava nelle Missioni Estere di Parma dove, completati gli studi teologici, veniva ordinato Sacerdote da Mons. Conforti il 28.11.1926.
Il 25 marzo, a 27 anni, partiva per la Cina ove lavorò in alcuni Distretti del Vicariato Apostolico di Cheng-chow e dal 1931 nella Chiesa della Concessione Italia-na di Tien-tsin. Ritornato nel 1937 alla Missione di Cheng-chow diresse la costruzione della Chiesa di Tsing-yun-li.
La direzione delle costruzioni restò il suo principale incarico per vari anni e la continuò anche in seguito, sebbene avesse altri impegni.
Negli anni 1942-45 venne internato nel campo di concentramento di Nei-shiang; quindi assunse la direzione interinale del Vicariato Apostolico di Cheng-chow sino alla venuta del nuovo Vescovo Mons. F. Tissot.
Nel 1945 è a Shangai membro della Commissione Sinodale della Nunziatura: da qui guidava un gruppo di Confratelli destinati alla futura Circoscrizione missionaria di I-chun (Kiang-si).
Da I-chun veniva espulso nel 1951 assieme ai Confratelli per ordine delle autorità comuniste.
Dopo una breve sosta ad Hong-kong, il 6.VII.1951 sbarcava a Padang a capo dei Confratelli che vi aprivano la nuova Missione. Un anno dopo veniva nominato Procuratore della Missione Saveriana di Padang, ruolo che terrà fino alla morte.
I suoi ininterrotti 32 anni di lavoro apostolico hanno messo in luce un carattere virtuoso carico di brio e di fascino, tipico di una persona cara che non si dimentica. Il P. Boggiani che fu con lui per 10 anni in Indonesia, scrive: "Posso affermare che fu sempre un caro papa, paziente e ricco di entusiasmo... Ricordo volentieri il suo spirito di sacrificio e di adattamento a tutto. La sua tomba per noi di qui è diventata un centro da cui possiamo attingere esempi fulgidi..."
Nel dicembre 1958 era arrivato nelle Isole Mentawai in cerca di legna adatta per le colonne di una futura chiesa, portando con sé il disegno della futura Casa Saveriana di Sikakap. Un imprevisto rovinò il disegno. Si mise all'opera per rifarne una copia: la terminò puntuale, lo sigillò per bene e lo consegnò ai passeggeri della "S. Maria", la navetta in servizio alle Mentawai. Poco dopo si sparse la notizia della sua morte. Scrive il P. Piero Calvi: "Appena sulla veranda mi vedo capitare, tutto trafelato, un maestro che mi dice: "Padre, corra, P. Capra è caduto!". In tre salti fui da lui. Era disteso sulla porta, rantolava. Corsi a prendere gli "Oli Santi" e feci appena in tempo a darglieli... Finito il disegno, era andato a fare il solito bagno. Appena uscito pian piano se ne tornava alla casa. Sulla porta disse: "Sto male". Cadde a faccia avanti".

Fr. Vincenzo Capra died at Muara Siberut (Indonesia) on Dec. 23 1958. He was 59 years old, born at Fosseto S. Sanvatore Moferrato (Alessandria) on Aug. 28 1899.
After studies with the Salesians, he worked in the State Train System, and during the First World War he served in the military in the Telegraph Command, both in Italy and in Albania. He was released when he was 22 years old, and in Oct. 1921 entered the Xaverians at Parma, professed religious vows on Nov. 13 1922, and was ordained priest by Bishop Conforti on Feb. 28 1926.
At the age of 26, on March 25 1926, he left for China where he worked in the Apostolic Vicariate of Cheng-chow and in 1931 in the Church under the hospices of the Italians in Tien-tsin. He returned to the mission of Cheng-chow in 1937, where he directed his energies in the building of the church of Tsing-yun-li. This work was one of the main services he carried out for many years in China, even in the midst of his other commitments.
He joined the other Xaverians at the concentration Camp of Nei-hsiang in 1942-43; then, he was at interim administrator of the Apostolic Vicariate of Cheng-chow in the absence of the Bishop, until Msgr. F. Tissot arrived. He goes to Shangai in 1945 as member of the Synod Commission of the Nuncio, and guided the first group of Xaverians assigned to the future missionary area of I-chun (Kinag-si).
From there, he was expelled by the communist authorities, together with other confreres, in 1951, and after a brief stay at Hong-kong, he headed to Padang on July 6 1951 to found the new mission of Indonesia.
His 32 years of continuous missionary life highlighted his virtuous character, full of life and awe, very much loved by all. Fr. Boggiani, who lived with him for about 10 years, shared his thoughts: “He was like a father, ever patient and full of enthusiasm… I remember his spirit of sacrifice, and his willingness to adapt in any circumstance. His tomb is among us, as a place where we can find a clear example of an apostle…”
In Dec. 1958 he was in the Mentawai Islands, in search of some special wood for the columns of a future Church, and brought with him a plan for the Xaverian House in Sikakap. But something in the trip ruined the plan; he worked hard to duplicate that design and was on time to give it to the people of the boat “S. Maria” which was leaving for the Mentawai Island. Right after this gesture, the news spread that he had passed away.
Fr. Pietro Calvi wrote: “I see a school teacher rush through the house and tell me ‘Father, hurry, because Fr. Capra has fallen.’ I was there in an instant, and I found him by the door, still moaning. I rushed to get the ‘Holy Oils’ and I barely had the time to administer the sacrament, before he died… After completing the Church drawing, Fr. Capra took a shower, and had gone for a walk, but struggled to come back. On the door he said ‘I don’t feel well’ and had fallen forward, with his face down.”
That was the afternoon of Dec. 23 1958. He is buried at Muara Siberut (Indonesia).
