1941 - 2023
Lunedì 24 aprile 2023, alle ore 4.05, è deceduto presso la Casa Madre di Parma il nostro confratello Fr. Angelo Antonio Fumagalli, membro della Comunità della Casa Madre. Aveva 82 anni appena compiuti, essendo nato il 12 aprile 1941 a Desio (Monza e Brianza, Lombardia).
Angelo Antonio, all’età di 8 anni, sente il desiderio di diventare missionario, ma subito dopo le scuole elementari comincia già a lavorare in una falegnameria. Grazie all’incontro con p. Costantino Mogliani s.x. (r.i.p.), nel 1953 entra nella Scuola Apostolica di Cremona dove frequenta le scuole Medie (1953-1956). Dopo un periodo di probandato nelle case saveriane di Parma e di Brescia, nel 1959 Angelo va a S. Pietro in Vincoli per vivere l’anno di Noviziato.
Emette la prima professione religiosa e missionaria il 5 novembre 1960. Subito dopo la prima professione, viene inviato a Piacenza (allora casa di formazione per le Vocazioni Adulte) come responsabile della falegnameria, della sagrestia e come autista (1960-1962). Dal 1962 al 1968, fr. Angelo è impegnato sostanzialmente come addetto alla Procura delle Missioni prima a Genova-Pegli (1962) e poi, dal 1963 al 1965, a Parma (nuova sede). Nel 1965 viene destinato alla Casa Generalizia (che in quel tempo aveva ancora sede a Parma) dove presta il suo servizio come Addetto alla casa, vice economo e autista della Direzione Generale.
Dopo un anno di studio del francese a Parigi (1969), e dello Swahili a Bujumbura (1970), Fr. Angelo risiede nell’episcopio di Uvira come economo della residenza vescovile e direttore della falegnameria e ferroneria. Nel 1975 è richiamato a Parma come magazziniere e spedizioniere della Procura delle Missioni Saveriane fino al 1978.
Dal 1978 al 1983, fr. Angelo è nuovamente ad Uvira (episcopio) come aiuto dell’economato generale diocesano. Dal 1983 al 1985 è a Parma per un periodo di aggiornamento e di servizio come vice economo dello Studentato Teologico – Filosofico. Dal 1985 al 1996 (eccettuato un periodo di cure vissuto a Parma), fr. Angelo si trova ad Uvira dove è impegnato come Responsabile dell’Officina presso l’economato generale diocesano.
A causa dello scoppio della guerra, alla fine del 1996 fr. Angelo rientra in Italia. Destinato alla Casa Madre di Parma, è impegnato prima come aiuto economo (1997-2001 e 2007-2008) e poi come economo locale (2001-2007). Dal 2008 al 2021 lavora nella Procura delle Missioni a Parma, dapprima come procuratore (2008-2020) e poi come collaboratore. Nel 2021 viene destinato alla Casa Madre dove collabora nei vari servizi ai confratelli.
“Da quasi tre mesi mi trovo a Bujumbura, Burundi, per apprendere lo Swahili, lingua nazionale del Congo. Lo studio della lingua mi è piuttosto difficile, ma la buona volontà non manca e spero di impararlo presto per poter passare definitivamente in Congo per il mio lavoro. I sacrifici non mancano, ma le gioie sono molte e ben più grandi dei sacrifici. Sento di trovarmi al mio posto, realizzando l’ideale che fin da piccolo ho avuto e la vocazione che il Signore mi ha donato senza alcun mio merito. Per esprimere giudizi sull’Africa è ancora presto, ma posso dire di essere strabiliato dalla fede autentica delle persone che incontro… Il giorno del mio onomastico ho accompagnato il Vescovo di Uvira a Luwungi per l’amministrazione delle cresime. In quei giorni, mentre attendevo le pratiche per i miei documenti, ho diretto una ventina di muratori: stanno costruendo il nuovo laboratorio e la falegnameria dove anch’io lavorerò come responsabile non appena avrò terminato lo studio della lingua. Un vero falegname sa partire da zero, ma deve anche lavorare per creare l’ambiente di lavoro…”. (dal Settimanale del Circondario di Monza, “Il Cittadino della Domenica”, 6 giugno 1970).
A causa del degradarsi, negli ultimi tempi, della sua salute, fr. Angelo viene portato al Quarto Piano della Casa Madre. Qui, all’alba del 24 aprile 2023, fr. Angelo sale in Cielo per contemplare la Gloria del Cristo Risorto e partecipare della vita eterna.

On Monday, April 24th, 2023, at 4:05 a.m., our 82-year old confrere Brother Angelo Antonio Fumagalli, member of the Mother House Community, passed away in the Mother House of Parma (Italy). He was born on April 12th, 1941 in Desio (Monza-and-Brianza, Lombardy – Italy).
At the age of eight, Angelo Antonio felt the desire to become a missionary, but right after elementary school he began already to work in a carpentry (or joinery). Thanks to a meeting with Fr. Costantino Mogliani s.x. (r.i.p.), in 1953 he came to enter the Scuola Apostolica (Xaverian minor seminary) in Cremona, where he attended middle school (1953-1956). After spending a period of probation in the Xaverian houses of Parma and Brescia, in 1959, Angelo moved to San Pietro in Vincoli for the year of Novitiate.
He made his first religious missionary profession on November 5th, 1960. Right after the first profession, he was sent to Piacenza (then house of formation for late vocations) where he was in charge of the carpentry, of the sacristy and served also as driver (1960-1962). From 1962 to 1968, Br. Angelo was substantially working as attendant for the Procura delle Missioni (Procuracy of Missions), first in Genova-Pegli (1962), then, from 1963 to 1965, in its new headquarter in Parma. In 1965, he was assigned to the General House (which at that time was still based in Parma) where he served as attendant for the house, vice-treasurer and driver of the General Direction.
He studied French for one year in Paris (1969), and Swahili in Bujumbura (1970), after which he moved to the bishop house of Uvira (D.R.Congo) where he worked as treasurer of the bishop residence and director of the carpentry and smithy. In 1975, he was called back to Parma and appointed as warehouse keeper and freight forwarder of the Xaverian Procura delle Missioni until 1978.
From 1978 to 1983, Br. Angelo was once again in Uvira (Bishop House) as assistant to the general office of the diocesan treasurer. From 1983 to 1985, he spent a period of sabbatical and service as vice-treasurer of the Theologate in Parma. From 1985 to 1996 (with the exception of a course of treatment in Parma), Br. Angelo was in Uvira, where he worked as director of the workshop attached to the general office of the diocesan treasurer.
Due to the outbreak of the war, towards the end of 1996, Br. Angelo returned to Italy. Assigned to the Mother House in Parma, he firstly worked as assistant to the treasurer (1997-2001 and 2007-2008), then as local treasurer (2001-2007). From 2008 to 2021, he served at the Procura delle Missioni in Parma as procurator (2008-2020), then as assistant. In 2021, he was assigned to the Mother House where he collaborated in various forms of service to the confreres.
“I have been in Bujumbura, Burundi, to study Swahili, the national language of the Congo, for about three months. Studying the language is quite difficult for me, but there is no shortage of good will on my part and I hope to learn it soon in order to be able to move permanently to the Congo for my work. Surely, there are sacrifices, but joys are many and far greater than the sacrifices.
I feel that this is my place and I am realizing both the ideal I have had since I was a child and the vocation that the Lord has given me without any merit of my own. It is too early for me to express any opinion on Africa, but I can say that I am astounded by the authentic faith of the persons I meet… On my name day, I accompanied the Bishop of Uvira to Luwungi where he administered the Sacrament of Confirmation. In those days, while I was waiting for my paperwork to be sorted out, I directed about twenty masons: they are building the new laboratory and the workshop of the carpentry where I also will be working as director once I have completed studying the language. A true carpenter is able to start from scratch, but must also work to create his working environment…” (from the Monza-district weekly “Il Cittadino della Domenica”, June 6th, 1970).
Due to the deterioration of his health in the last period of his life, Br. Angelo was taken to the Fourth Floor of the Mother House. There, on April 24th, 2023, at dawn, Br. Angel went up to Heaven to contemplate the Glory of the Risen Christ and participate in eternal life.
