Il 10 settembre 2010, alle ore 20:15, moriva all’ospedale di San Donà il P. Vincenzo Tonetto, a seguito di un incidente stradale occorsogli 66 giorni prima. P. Vincenzo era prossimo a compiere 83 anni, essendo nato a San Donà di Piave (VE) il giorno 06.11.1927.
Era entrato a 21 anni nell’Istituto a Poggio S. Marcello nel 1948, per iniziare la prima media. Terminato il ginnasio nel 1953, convinto della sua vocazione missionaria, chiese di entrare in noviziato: “Ora Padre desidero di tutto cuore di essere ammesso a far parte di questa famiglia Saveriana, che tanto ho amato ed amo, unicamente per servire Gesù in uno stato più perfetto e di donare tutta la mia vita per la salvezza degli infedeli.” Entrato in noviziato a San Pietro in Vincoli, emise la prima professione il 12.09.1954. Continuò gli studi liceali a Desio e al momento di rinnovare i voti che aveva fatto per un triennio, espresse il desiderio di poter fare la sua consacrazione in perpetuo al Signore. Il suo desiderio fu esaudito, e il 3 novembre 1957 emetteva la sua Professione Perpetua. Passato a Parma per gli studi di Filosofia-Teologia, fu ordinato presbitero nella cappella della Casa Madre il 16.10.1960.
Dopo l’ordinazione venne destinato dai superiori al Brasile Sud, dove arrivò l’8.01.1962. Dopo aver dedicato alcuni mesi allo studio della lingua, a San Paolo, fu inviato come vice parroco prima nella parrocchia di Sant’Ana a Laranjeiras do Su (1962-63), poi a Centenario do Sul (1963-64), poi ancora alla parrocchia di Sant’Ana a Laranjeiras do sul (1964-68). Lavorando in queste parrocchie, come ci ricorda P. Herondi de Araujo, “P. Vincenzo era responsabile di oltre cinquanta comunità, ubicate nella vasta area di Laranjeiras do Sul … per servire tutti i fedeli di queste comunità nella vasta parrocchia, p. Vincenzo si metteva in strada ogni giorno, con il sole su strade buone o con le piogge su strade cattive. Nulla lo fermava! Con gioia e determinazione, partiva dal centro della parrocchia per servire la gente; a volte andava e veniva in giornata, altre volte pernottava fuori, accettando l’umile ospitalità delle famiglie o dormendo nella sacrestia della chiesa, adeguandosi alle situazioni della gente.”
In seguito fu parroco a Campo Mourao dal 1970 al 1980, e nella parrocchia di S. Francisco Xavier a Piracicaba dal 1980 al 1996, con una breve interruzione da marzo a novembre del 1990 quando fu parroco nella parrocchia di S. José, a Jaguapità. P.Vincenzo entrava nella vita della gente e si faceva amare, come ci ricordano varie testimonianze dei suoi ex parrocchiani: “Padre Vincenzo si è sempre distinto per la semplicità: si abbassò al livello di noi poveri: vestiva abiti comuni e aveva sempre un berretto in testa: attraversava le baraccopoli, entrava nelle case dei più poveri e dei più ricchi: in quelle dei più poveri per vedere le loro esigenze, e in quelle dei più ricchi per chiedere gli aiuti per i poveri. Inoltre si è distinto per il suo grande zelo per le cose di Dio; richiedeva serietà e dedizione da parte di coloro che dovevano lavorare nella chiesa; parlava della Madonna come uno che stesse parlando di sua mamma” (Celso Elia e famiglia).
Dal 1996 al 1997 fu vice parroco a Laranjeiras do Sul-Porto Santana, poi ancora vice parroco a Hortolandia dal 1997 al 1998, e infine a Londrina-Conjuntos dal 1998 al 2004. In seguito alle conseguenze di un incidente, nel 2004 dovette tornare in Italia per cure. Fu dapprima a Parma-Casa Madre, e poi a Pegli. Nel 2005 tornò in Brasile Sud, ma dovette rientrare a Parma poco dopo. Nel 2006 chiese alla DG ed ottenne di essere destinato ancora al Brasile Sud, dove svolse il suo nuovo ministero pastorale dapprima a Saltinho, dal 2007 al 2008 e poi a Piracicaba.
Era tornato in Italia a giugno per un periodo di vacanze e in occasione del suo 50º di ordinazione. Non poteva immaginare che quel giubileo così aspettato e preparato, l’avrebbe celebrato in un modo tutto speciale, alla presenza di quel Signore che l’aveva chiamato a dare la vita per la missione.

Fr. Vincenzo Tonetto died on September 10 at the San Donà hospital after being involved in a road accident two months before.
Born in San Donà di Piave (Venice, Italy) on October 28, 1927, Fr. Vincenzo was 82 years old.
In 1948, at the age of 21, he joined the Institute in Poggio S. Marcello, where he began the first year of secondary school. At the end of high school in 1953, and convinced of his missionary vocation, he applied for Novitiate: “Father, I now wish with all my heart to be admitted to this Xaverian family, which I love so much, solely to serve Jesus in a more perfect state and to give my entire life for the salvation of the pagans.” He joined the Novitiate in San Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on September 12, 1954. He continued his lyceum studies at Desio and when the time came to renew the vows he had made for three years, he expressed the desire to make his Final Profession. His wish was granted and he made his final vows on November 3, 1957.
He moved to Parma to study Philosophy and Theology and was ordained priest in the Church of the Mother House on October 16, 1960.
After his ordination, the superiors assigned him to South Brazil and he arrived there on 8 January 1962. After some months of language study in San Paulo, he was sent as assistant priest, first to the parish of Sant’Ana at Laranjeiras do Su (1962-63), then to Centenario do Sul (1963-64) and once again to the parish of Sant’Ana at Laranjeiras do sul (1964-68). Fr. Herondi de Araujo thus remembers him working in these parishes: “Fr. Vincenzo was in charge of more than fifty communities, scattered over the vast territory of Laranjeiras do Sul … in order to serve all the faithful of these communities of the immense parish, Fr. Vincenzo was out in the streets every day, with the sun shining on good roads or with the rain pouring on bad roads. Nothing stopped him! He left the parish center to serve the people with joy and determination; sometimes he went out and returned on the same day; at other times he spent the night away from home, accepting the humble hospitality of the families or sleeping in the sacristy of the church, adapting himself to the circumstances of the people.”
Thereafter, he served as parish priest at Campo Mourao (1970-1980 and the parish of S. Francisco Xavier in Piracicaba (1980-1996), with a brief interruption (March-November 1990) when he was parish priest of S. José, in Jaguapità. Fr.Vincenzo entered into the life of the people and was loved by them, as some of his former parishioners tell us: “Fr. Vincenzo always stood out for his simplicity: he descended to the level of us poor people: he wore ordinary clothes and always had a beret on his head: he traveled through the shanty towns, went into the houses of the poorest people to see their needs, and the houses of the richest people to ask for help for the poor. He also stood out for his great zeal for the things of God; he demanded seriousness and dedication of those who worked in the church; he spoke of Our Lady as one who was speaking of his own mother” (Celso Elia and family).
From 1996 until 1997 he was assistant priest at Laranjeiras do Sul-Porto Santana, then assistant priest at Hortolandia (1997-1998) and, finally, at Londrina-Conjuntos (1998-2004).
Following the consequences of an accident, in 2004 he had to return to Italy for treatment. He lived first in the Parma-Mother House and then moved to Pegli. He went back to South Brazil in 2005, but he had to return to Parma again shortly after. In 2006, the General Direction granted his request to be reassigned to South Brazil, where he carried out his new pastoral ministry first at Saltinho (2007-2008) and then at Piracicaba.
In June 2010, he returned to Italy for his vacations and the celebration of his 50 years as a priest. He could not have imagined that his long-awaited and well-prepared Jubilee would be celebrated in a very special way, in the presence of the Lord who had called him to give his life for the mission.
