IL DOCUMENTO CONCILIARE "AD GENTES" COMPIE 60 ANNI (7 dicembre 1965)

Il 7 dicembre 2025 ricorre il LX anniversario della promulgazione del Decreto Conciliare Ad Gentes ("Alle Genti").  "Ad Gentes" sono le primissime parole del Documento: AD GENTES DIVINITUS missa ut sit «universale salutis sacramentum» Ecclesia ex intimis propriae catholicitatis exigentiis, mandato sui Fundatoris oboediens, Evangelium omnibus hominibus nuntiare contendit. (Inviata per mandato divino alle genti per essere "sacramento universale di salvezza" la Chiesa, rispondendo a un tempo alle esigenze più profonde della sua cattolicità ed all'ordine specifico del suo fondatore, si sforza di portare l'annuncio del Vangelo a tutti gli uomini).

Il nostro confratello p. Franco Sottocornola, missionario in Giappone (Shinmeizan, Centro di Spiritualità e Dialogo Interreligioso) ha condiviso un suo scritto - richiestogli in occasione del L anniversario dell'inizio del Concilio Vaticano II - sul documento conciliare "Ad Gentes" e pubblicato nella rivista portoghese Igreja e Missao (maggio-agosto 2012, pp. 173-212) con il titolo "A 50 anni dal Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano II. Rileggere oggi il decreto Ad gentes sull'attività missionaria della Chiesa, per la sua attuazione".

Il testo di p. Franco Sottocornola ci è sembrato ancora molto attuale. Come Istituto Missionario siamo chiamati a valorizzare questa "occasione" riprendendo in mano ed in considerazione, il documento Ad Gentes così attuale e ricco di ispirazione, aiutati anche dal contributo del nostro confratello.

THE COUNCIL DOCUMENT "AD GENTES" MARKS ITS 60^TH ANNIVERSARY (December 7^th, 1965)

December 7^th, 2025 marks the 60^th anniversary of the promulgation of Ad Gentes (To the Nations), the Second Vatican Council's decree. "Ad Gentes" are the first words of the Document: "AD GENTES DIVINITUS missa ut sit «universale salutis sacramentum» Ecclesia ex intimis propriae catholicitatis exigentiis, mandato sui Fundatoris oboediens, Evangelium omnibus hominibus nuntiare contendit." (Divinely sent to the nations of the world to be unto them "a universal sacrament of salvation," the Church, driven by the inner necessity of her own catholicity, and obeying the mandate of her Founder, strives ever to proclaim the Gospel to all men.)

Our confrere, Fr. Franco Sottocornola, missionary in Japan (Shinmeizan, Centre for Spirituality and Interreligious Dialogue), shares with us a paper he was requested to prepare at the time of the 50^th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. It is an article on the Council's document Ad Gentes which was published by the Portuguese magazine Igreja e Missao (May-August 2012, pp. 173-212) under the title "A 50 anni dal Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano II. Rileggere oggi il decreto Ad gentes sull'attività missionaria della Chiesa, per la sua attuazione" (50 years after the Second Ecumenic Vatican Council. Reading the decree Ad Gentes on the missionary activity of the Church in order to implement it today).

Fr. Franco Sottocornola's article continues to be very relevant today. As a Missionary Institute, we are called to value this "occasion" by picking up again the document Ad Gentes and giving it due consideration. The contribution of our confrere can help us appreciate how Ad Gentes is still so significant and inspiring.
