Nato a Gragnano (LU), paesino toscano sui colli lucchesi, il 7.XII.l938, da Famiglia molto cristiana. "Fin da piccolino diceva che si sarebbe fatto prete". Entrò infatti nel Seminario di Lucca per frequentarvi il Ginnasio Superiore e il Liceo.
Dotato di buona intelligenza, di un carattere aperto, sereno e generoso, si attirò la stima da parte degli amici e l’elogio dei Superiori che così lo descrivevano: “… ha adempiuto sempre con esemplare diligenza i propri doveri, distinguendosi per una condotta ineccepibile".
Nel Seminario di Lucca maturò la Vocazione Missionaria che approfondì, oltre alla sua inclinazione alla riflessione seria e nutrita, arricchendola di una fitta corrispondenza scrivendo a vari Saveriani e partecipando, nell’estate del 1960, al Congresso Missionario di Parma. Scrivendo a P. W. Gardini, il 18 Luglio, indicava i motivi che lo spingevano verso le Missioni:
“… anzitutto per contraccambiare l’amore del Signore; per un bisogno e dovere di fare qualcosa per Lui; il suo amore non è stato una manifestazione di belle parole, ma si attua nel piano concreto della vita in maniera che lascia oltremodo stupiti. Sento il bisogno di dare alla mia vita un ‘impostazione sempre più generosa e pieno di slancio per il Signore..."
A 22 anni, il 28.IX.1960, entrava nel Noviziato Saveriano di S. Pietro in Vincoli (RA) e l’anno successivo, il 3.X.l961, emetteva la Professione temporanea nella Casa Madre di Parma presso la Tomba del Fondatore dei Saveriani.
Ultimato l’anno propedeutico, dal 1962 al 1963, fu Assistente dei giovani Allievi Missionari nella Casa Saveriana di Cremona, dove si mostrò ricco di spirito di sacrificio e servizievole al massimo.
Dall’ottobre 1963 fino al giorno della tragica morte, avvenuta il 5 Aprile 1966, visse per tre anni al Collegio Internazionale Saveriano di Roma, frequentando i Corsi Teologici presso l’Università di "Propaganda Fide".
Nei primi giorni della Settimana Santa dell’aprile 1966, gli Studenti del III° Corso avevano organizzato una Gita-pellegrinaggio ad Assisi. Qui accadde il grave incidente. Scendendo dalle "Carceri", l’auto su cui quattro Studenti viaggiavano, slittò, finendo ribaltata nella scarpata sottostante. Portato in ospedale, Mauro concludeva il suo viaggio terreno alle 16,30 del Martedì Santo.

Mauro Fenili, student at the International Xaverian College of Rome, died on April 5 1966 at Assisi Hospital, following a car accident. He was 27 years old, born at Gragnano (Lucca) on Dec. 7 1938.
He grew up in a Christian family located in a small village of the mountains of Lucca, and since his childhood, he wanted to become a priest. He studied at the Diocesan Seminary of Lucca, receiving appreciation and compliments from his own superiors who remembered him as always doing his own tasks with exemplary diligence, excelling in his good behavior. He was intelligent, open, serene, generous, friend with everyone.
In the Seminary of Lucca he deepened the call to missionary life through his personal reflection, and through the extensive correspondence with missionaries and Xaverians in particular, and through his participation at the Missionary Congress in Parma in the summer of 1960.
In a letter to Fr. W. Gardini, Fenili wrote his motivations that supported his mission call: "First of all, I would like to give back what I receive from the love of the Lord. Then, I feel an urge and a duty to do something for Him. His love was not a show of nice words, but itís put into practice in the project of life, which makes us reflect in awe. I feel the need to give to my life a more generous slant, filled with yearning for the LordÖ What prompts me to donate myself to God is the need of a more complete donation to Him who did not love me half-heartedly, a donation to be realized in consuming myself for the very purpose for which Jesus came into the world. I understand now how futile it would be to live the Divine Life in a selfish manner, without doing everything possible to enable those who do not know it, to come into full possession of it."
When he was 22, on Sept. 28 1960, Mauro entered the Xaverian Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli (RA), arriving there 10 days before the entrance date, reluctant to waste any of the days of his life away for what was, he knew then, his true vocation. On Oct. 3 1961, Mauro gave himself to God through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in the Mother House at Parma, by the tomb of the Founder. "By offering myself to God through the Religious Vows, I have assumed a responsibility before both the Christian and non-Christian community: to be a living witness to Christ, one who makes a continuous and personal witness to Christ."
After philosophy studies, in 1962 he was sent to the apostolic school of Cremona as assistant of the students for one year, where he showed his rich spirit of sacrifice and his dedication to others. From Oct. 1963 till the day of his tragic death, he lived at the International Xaverian College in Rome, attending Theology Courses at the University of Propaganda Fide.
During Holy Week of April 1966, his class decided to go on pilgrimage to Assisi. The fatal accident that ended his young life happened on his way down from the Prisons. Four students were inside of the car when they lost control of the car, and went down the ditch. Mauro Fenili was rushed to the Hospital of Assisi, but died there at about 4:30pm on that Tuesday of Holy Week, April 5 1966, of brain injuries.
