A Campinas SP (Brasile), all’ospedale ‘Beneficéncia Portuguesa’, il 28.7.2007, alle 10,30 locali, è morto il P. Roberto Beduschi. Era ricoverato da una decina di giorni, in coma, per ictus cerebrale. Aveva 86 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Rivarolo Mantovano il 29.6.1921.
P. Roberto entrò tra i Saveriani, nel noviziato di S. Pietro in Vincoli, il 10.8.1940, insieme con Mons. Frosi e P. Pugnoli. Provenivano dal Seminario di Cremona, così presentati dal loro Rettore: «Sono tutti e tre ottimi figlioli, pieni di generosità ed entusiasmo, di carattere buono, cordiale: penso proprio debbano fare ottima riuscita» (18.6.40). Emessa la Prima Professione (8.9.41), passò a Parma per la Teologia, interrotta dal servizio di prefetto a Grumone (42-43) e conclusa con l’ordinazione presbiterale il 20.4.1946. Furono anni di maturazione, non sempre facili: «il Signore non mi ha lasciato mancare le prove: ma ora è con tanta riconoscenza che guardo a questi anni di lotta perché sento che essi sono serviti a radicare in me delle convinzioni profonde che spero, con l’aiuto del Signore, saranno basi solide e sicure per la mia vita avvenire» (19.8.45).
Uscito dalla teologia, fu impiegato come insegnante a Grumone (47-49) e a Zelarino (49-51). Afflitto da una fastidiosa afonia che non gli consentiva di fare scuola, fu assegnato al Centro Saveriano Azione Missionaria (CSAM) di Parma, come Redattore (51-56) e poi Direttore (56-60) del mensile Missionari Saveriani. Dal 1960 al 1970 guidò la parrocchia del Tempio del Sacro Cuore di Parma: apprezzato per le sue omelie e per l’impegno nel dare attuazione al Concilio Vaticano II. Dal 1970 al 1972 fu maestro dei novizi a Nizza Monferrato: due anni soltanto, perché nel 1972 quel noviziato, per il calo delle vocazioni, veniva definitivamente chiuso. Il P. Roberto ebbe allora il sospirato via libera per la missione, il Brasile Sud: «sento rinascere in me una seconda giovinezza: spero proprio che il Signore mi aiuti, così da potermi impegnare a fondo nel nuovo campo di lavoro; sono particolarmente felice di poterGli dare questa “testimonianza”» (18.6.72).
L’avventura brasiliana del P. Roberto iniziò nel novembre 1973. Per la verità, il suo sogno missionario era il Parà. Lo chiese anche, ma inutilmente. Qualche mese più tardi scriveva: «ma oggi non lo chiederei più: mi sento più missionario al Sud... se S. Paolo venisse oggi in Brasile per evangelizzarlo, non andrebbe nel Parà, ma a S. Paolo, Rio, Belo Honzonte ecc. è lì che si sta creando il futuro del Brasile» (7.7.75).
Fu fatto Maestro dei Novizi (74-77): «accettai, per un anno, per iniziare con un bel sacrificio» (7.7.75).
Dal 75 al 78 fu pure ViceRegionale. Nel 1977 fu nominato Rettore dei teologi, «ma dopo pochi mesi fu presa la parrocchia di Goio-Eré e lui ottenne di andare a lavorare nella nuova parrocchia. Insieme a un altro Padre preparavano i sussidi per le Comunità di base che a loro volta evangelizzavano capillarmente la parrocchia e così metteva in pratica il suo motto: “seminare, seminare, seminare”» (P. Volpini, 30.7.07).
Dall’80 all’84 ricoprì l’incarico di Direttore del giornale missionario saveriano, Kosmos. Fu poi parroco a Pirajù (85-96) e successivamente viceparroco a Cantagalo (97-01) e a Piracicaba (01-05). Dal luglio 2005 faceva parte della comunità del Noviziato di Hortolandia.
Non c’è dubbio che la missione fu l’orizzonte di P. Roberto. Come scrisse al Superiore Generale (20.6.49) allorché si seppe che la Congregazione stava per accettare missioni in Africa: «Con tutto l’entusiasmo noi, Padre, ci mettiamo nelle sue mani e le diciamo “ecce ego, mitte me”! Il Signore per mezzo suo farà di noi quello che Lui vorrà; dal canto nostro sappia, Padre, che il nostro desiderio più vivo, che ci accompagna ogni giorno nel nostro lavoro è solo: le Missioni: partire per le missioni. Ad esse noi abbiamo legato la vita».

Fr. Roberto Beduschi died on the morning of July 28 2007 (10:30 local time), in the “Beneficência Portuguesa” hospital, Campinas (Brazil). He had been admitted to the hospital about ten days previously and was in a coma after suffering a stroke.
Born in Rivarolo Mantovano on June 29 1921, he was 86 years old.
Fr. Roberto joined the Xaverians in Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli on Aug. 10 1940, together with bishop Frosi and Fr. Pugnoli. They came from the Cremona Seminary and were thus presented by their Rector: “The three of them are excellent young men, full of generosity and enthusiasm, endowed with a good and cordial temperament: I think they shall be a great success” (June 18 1940). After his First Profession (Sept. 8 1941), Fr. Roberto went to Parma to study Theology, with an interruption of one year as prefect in Grumone (1942-43), before returning to his Theology studies, at the end of which he was ordained priest on Apr. 20 1946. These years of growth were not without some difficulties: “The Lord did not spare me some tribulation, but I can now look back on these years of struggle with great gratitude because they helped me to acquire deep convictions which I hope, with the Lord’s help, shall be a solid and sure foundation for my future life” (Aug. 19 1945).
After theology, he was sent to teach at Grumone (1947-49) and Zelarino (1949-51). Afflicted by a bothersome aphonia that prevented him from teaching, he was sent to the Xaverian Missionary Animation Center (CSAM) in Parma, as Editor (1951-56) and then Director (1956-60) of the monthly publication “Missionari Saveriani.” From 1960 until 1970, he guided the Sacred Heart parish in Parma, where he was much appreciated as a homilist and for his efforts to implement the Second Vatican Council.
From 1970 until 1972, he was Novice Master at Nizza Monferrato: he only spent two years there because the novitiate was finally closed in 1972, due to a drop in the number of vocations. Fr. Roberto received the much desired permission to leave for the mission of South Brazil: “It is like a new birth for me, a second youth. I hope that the Lord will help me to give myself entirely to this new field of work; I am especially happy to be able to bear this witness to Him” (June 18, 1972).
Fr. Roberto’s Brazilian adventure began in November 1973. His real missionary dream was to work in the Parà, but his request was in vain. A few months later he wrote: “I would not longer ask for it: I fell more of a missionary in the South… if St. Paul came to Brazil to evangelize today, he would not go to the Parà, but to Sao Paulo, Rio, Belo Horizonte, etc. It is there that the future of Brazil is being created” (July 7, 1975).
He was appointed Novice Master (1974-77): “I accepted, for a year, to begin with a real sacrifice” (July 7 1975).
From 1975 until 1978, he was also Vice-Regional. He was appointed Theology Rector in 1977, “but after a few months the Xaverians took on the parish of Goio-Erê and he received permission to work in the new parish. He and another father prepared the resources for the Basic Communities that were to carry out an extensive evangelization of the parish; in this way, he was putting into practice his motto: ‘sow, sow, sow’” (Fr. Volpini, July 30, 2007).
From 1980 until 1984, he was Director of the Xaverian missionary bulletin “Kosmos.” He then worked as parish priest at Pirajù (1985-96) and subsequently assistant priest at Cantagalo (1997-2001) and Piracicaba (2001-05). From July 2005, he was a member of the Novitiate community in Hortolandia.
There is no doubt that the mission was Fr. Roberto’s priority. As he wrote to the Superior General (June 20 1949), when he heard that the Congregation was about to accept missions in Africa, he wrote: “Father, we place ourselves into your hands with great enthusiasm and say ‘ecce ego, mitte me!’ (Here I am, send me!) Through you, may the Lord do as he pleases with us; our greatest desire, which accompanies us every day of our life, is only the Missions, to leave for the missions. To this cause we have dedicated our life.”
