Il 3.4.2007, all’ospedale Divina Provvidenza di Marituba (Belem) alle 12,45 locali, è morto, stroncato da infarto, il P. Mario Cordani.
Aveva quasi 78 armi essendo nato a Varsi (Parma) il 7.5.1929.
Entrò all’Istituto a Poggio S. Marcello (Ancona) il 26.12.1948, tra le vocazioni adulte per le quali la Congregazione non aveva allora una sede: per le tre medie la sua classe fu successivamente a Cremona, poi a Grumone, ancora a Poggio S. Marcello e, infine, per il ginnasio (52-54), a Pedrengo. A settembre del 54 entrò in noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli e l’anno successivo fu presentato per la Prima Professione (12.9.55) con questo giudizio: “E un ottimo giovane: umile, modesto, di sacrificio, osservantissimo e di grande pietà eucaristica e devozione alla Madonna. Peccato sia poco espansivo con i compagni, alquanto timido e indeciso ... è sano e amante del lavoro anche ingrato o faticoso. Intellettualmente non eccelle”. Fece quindi il liceo a Desio (55-58), la propedeutica a Piacenza (58-59) e infine la teologia a Parma (59-63) dove fu ordinato presbitero il 28.10.1962. Di quegli anni non si può dimenticare il servizio di barbiere apprezzato in liceo e teologia.
Dal 1963 al 1966 lavorò nel Brasile Sud, a Lupianopolis, come Vice-Vigario, impegnato a “battezzare, confessare, visitare ammalati, assistere moribondi, fare catechismo nella scuola, benedire le case, visitare le famiglie, attendere al ministero nelle cappelle” (12.2.65).
Nel 1966 passò al Brasile Nord, dove prestò il suo servizio in diverse parrocchie: fu parroco a N. S. das Merces di Belém (68-70), a Bujarà (70-71) e soprattutto a Acarà (74-79), “una delle parrocchie più sparse e faticose della Prelazia. Viaggi lunghissimi per fiumi e a piedi per la foresta”.
Nel 1979 gli fu chiesto l’avvicendamento. P. Mario non temeva i cambi di attività: “Non mi preoccupo tanto perché sono certo che mi faranno fare quello che sono capace di compiere. Gli inizi e gli adattamenti sono sempre e dappertutto un po’ faticosi, ma con la Grazia di Dio, l’aiuto dei confratelli e un po’ di buona volontà personale, si riuscirà certamente ad andare avanti bene” (16.2.79). Ritornò quindi in Italia, sostituto del Rettore in Casa Madre, addetto all’accoglienza e all’assistenza degli ammalati (79-84): “E stato per me un dono... al servizio prevalentemente dei confratelli anziani e ammalati, ho imparato a ‘vivere’ in modo nuovo, sullo stile di S. Teresa del Bambino Gesù, la mia vocazione religiosa missionaria” (1.7.84).
Dopo un anno di aggiornamento a Roma, nel 1986 ripartì per il Brasile Nord e fu ancora parroco di N. S. Das Merces di Belém e di Acarà ( 87-91). Erano anni difficili per la società brasiliana: “La situazione economica sociale del Brasile sembra che peggiori sempre più: inflazione e miseria. Si ha l’impressione generale che la gente bisognosa viva per un continuo miracolo della Divina Provvidenza” (23 .2.88).
Nel 1991 accettò un nuovo avvicendamento in Italia, nella comunità di Genova-Pegli (91-93) e poi a Reggio Calabria-Gallico (93-99), dedicato alla comunità, all’animazione missionaria e a molto ministero. Nel 2000 poté tornare in Brasile Sud e successivamente (2005) in Brasile Nord. Sempre impegnato nella pastorale parrocchiale.
P. Mario ha veramente vissuto quanto chiesto alla vigilia dell’ordinazione: “Chiedo una specialissima benedizione del nostro Venerato Fondatore, affinché nella sua Congregazione e nelle mani dei miei Superiori, per la maggior gloria del Signore, per il bene eterno della mia povera anima e delle anime del mondo intero, possa comportarmi costantemente con una docilità tale da essere ovunque un missionario degno di Lui” (8.10.62).

Fr. Mario Cordani died of a heart attack on Apr. 3 2007, at the Divine Providence hospital in Marituba (Belem, Brazil).
Born in Varsi (Parma) on May 7 1929, he was almost 78 years old.
He joined the Xaverians in Poggio S. Marcello (Ancona) on 26 December 1948, among the adult vocations for which the Congregation at that time had no specific community: for the three secondary school years his class studied in Cremona, then Grumone, back to Poggio S. Marcello and, finally, to Pedrengo for high school (1952-54). He began Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli in September 1954 and the following year was presented for First Profession (Sept. 12 1955) with this report: “He is an excellent young man: humble, modest, with a spirit of sacrifice, very observant of the rules, he has a great Eucharistic piety and devotion to Our Lady. It is a pity he is not very outgoing with his companions; he is somewhat timid and uncertain…He enjoys good health and loves even unpleasant and tiring work. He does not excel in intellectual matters”. He then attended liceo at Desio (1955-58), the propedeutica at Piacenza (58-59) and, finally, theology in Parma (1959-63), where he was ordained priest on Oct. 28 1962. During those years he was a much-appreciated barber in liceo and theology.
From 1963 until 1966 he worked in South Brazil, at Lupianopolis, as assistant parish priest, engaged in “baptisms, confessions, visits to the sick, assisting the dying, catechism in the school, blessing the houses and ministry in the chapels”(12.2.65).
He moved to North Brazil in 1966, where he worked in various parishes: he was parish priest at N. S. das Merces di Belém (1968-70), Bujarù (1970-71) and especially at Acarà (1974-79), “one of the most scattered and difficult parishes of the Prelature. Very long journeys by river and on foot through the forest”.
In 1979 he was asked to accept rotation. Fr. Mario was not afraid of changing activity: “I am not worried because I am sure they shall ask me to do something I am capable of doing. The beginning and the adaptation are always and everywhere a little difficult, but with the Grace of God, the help of the confreres and some good will on my part, we shall succeed” (Feb. 16 1979). He therefore returned to Italy as substitute of the Rector in the Mother House, assigned to the welcome and assistance of the sick confreres (79-84): “It was a gift to me…my work mainly in the service of the elderly and sick confreres taught me how ‘to live’ my religious and missionary vocation in a new way, following the example of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus” (July 1 1984).
After a year of aggiornamento in Rome, he left once again for North Brazil in 1986 and worked again as parish priest of N. S. Das Merces at Belém and at Acarà (1987-91). These were difficult years for Brazilian society: “The economic situation of Brazil seems to be getting worse with inflation and poverty. The general impression is that the needy live only by a continual miracle of Divine Providence” (Feb. 23 1988).
In 1991 he accepted rotation once again and was assigned to Italy, to the community of Genova-Pegli (1991-93) then to Reggio Calabria-Gallico (1993-99), where he worked in the community, Missionary Animation and a great deal of ministry.
He returned to South Brazil in 2000 and then moved to South Brazil in 2005. During this time he always worked in parish pastoral ministry.
Fr. Mario truly lived what he asked for on the eve of his ordination: “I ask our Venerable Founder for very special blessing, so that in his Congregation and in the hands of my Superiors, for the Lord’s greater glory, the eternal salvation of my poor soul and the souls of the entire world, I may always be docile in such a way that I may be his worthy missionary wherever I go” (Oct. 8 1962). May He rest in peace.
