Nato ad Ottana (NU) il 4.VI.1941 entrò nell'Istituto Saveriano a Massa Lucana per frequentarvi la prima media. Completato il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli, vi emise la Professione religioso-missionaria il 22.IX.1959, passando quindi a Desio per il Liceo ed a Parma per la Teologia; fu ordinato Sacerdote al paese nativo il 28.X.1967 dal Vescovo di Nuoro Mons. Giuseppe Melas.
Destinato alla Spagna, per cinque anni fu entusiasta promotore vocazionale nella Casa di Guernica e quindi al Centro Vocazionale Saveriano di Bilbao. L'animazione missionaria dei gruppi giovanili mise in risalto le sue ricche doti di interiorità, di generosità evangelica, di talento artistico e di profonda amicizia umana. Già soffriva per disturbi di ulcera allo stomaco.
Il 27.1.1973 partiva per l'Amazzonia con due Missionarie Laiche.
Nei quasi cinque anni di presenza missionaria fu a Belèm e a Tomè-Acù svolgendo un'attività travolgente in mezzo alle Comunità Parrocchiali, prediligendo sempre i gruppi giovanili, che sapeva trasformare con la sua carica interiore per Cristo.
Costretto a lasciare l'Amazzonia per l'acutizzarsi dei dolori, passò periodi di cure prima ad Holliston (U.S.A.), quindi in Italia ed infine in Spagna.
"Lo si vedeva spesso tenersi lo stomaco con le mani, appunto per comprimere i dolori che non lo lasciavano neppure dormire. Di notte scendeva in cucina a prendere un po' di latte, perché il latte gli dava qualche refrigerio. Di giorno finché poteva leggeva; poi passava lunghe ore a suonare il pianoforte per tentare di dimenticare il suo stomaco. Aveva doti musicali eccezionali ed un udito finissimo...".
Ai primi di ottobre 1978 fu deciso un intervento chirurgico: a causa della grandezza dell'ulcera gli dovettero asportare buona parte dello stomaco. Sembrò migliorare. Una gravissima ed improvvisa emorragia lo portò alla morte, a Madrid il 28.XII.1978.
Nell'ottobre 1976 aveva scritto dall'Amazzonia:
"Siamo stanchi... ma ci siamo riusciti! La vita continua e noi viviamo per protegger la vita e far sì che la vita continui… non solo la vita fisica, ma soprattutto la vita della speranza, dell'entusiasmo, del dinamismo e della dignità umana, dell'unione e della solidarietà tra gli uomini, dell'allegria e della simpatia degli uni per gli altri.
Oh, quante cose belle!
Sono tutte queste cose che mi danno l'allegria di essere missionario, tutte queste cose fanno nascere in me la voglia di essere fedele e più perfetto sempre. Dio ci aiuti" (Belèm, 8.X.1976).
"Ricordatemi così,
come sono adesso,
oggi
in cammino verso la morte

Fr. Mario Del Rio died on Dec. 27 1978 at Madrid, of postoperative hemorrhages from ulcer surgery at the Hospital. He was 37 years old, born on June 4 1941 at Ottana (Nuoro).
He entered the Xaverian congregation at Massa Lucana for middle school. At the completion of the year of Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli, he professed religious missionary vows on Sept. 12 1959. After studies at Desio and Parma, he was ordained to the priesthood in his own native town by Bishop Giuseppe Melas on Oct. 28 1967.
He was soon assigned to Spain, where he worked in missionary vocation work at Guernica and Bilbao with much enthusiasm, for about five years. He excelled in his meetings with the youth for his rich depth he brought, his evangelic generosity, his artistic gifts and his deep human friendship with them. Already during those years, he was suffering of stomach ulcers.
On Jan. 27 1973 he departed for Northern Brazil with two lay missionary women. In the Amazons, he worked at Belèm and at Tomè-Acù in parish ministry, with a special concern for the youth, sharing his personal experience of Christ. Msgr. Frosi remembers: “Fr. Mario was untiring in his pastoral work: he prepared meetings and homilies, he published the parish bulletin… The liturgical celebrations he presided at they were feasts, which represented strong moments of the church life and of communion with God. As a man of great sensitivity, he felt the drama of not being completely understood by confreres and parishioners alike; he wanted to be understood so as to integrate himself better in the faith community. We had a difficult time understanding him in his originality and intuitions. Both his sickness and his poor health influenced greatly this situation.”
Because of health reasons, he left the Amazons, and sought cures first at Holliston (USA), then Italy and finally Spain.“Many times you would see him pressing his hands into his stomach, to provide some relief; the pains were so unbearable that he could not sleep. During the night he would go to the kitchen for some milk, and that he would ease some pain. He tried to read, and played the piano for many hours, trying mainly to forget his ulcers problems. He was skilled at the piano, with a fine ear…”
At the beginning of October 1978 he underwent a surgical procedure, in order to remove the big mass from his stomach. It seemed to improve, but a sudden hemorrhage complicated his recovery, which brought him to his death on Dec. 28 1978.
In October 1976, he wrote from the Amazons: “We are tired… but we have accomplished everything. Life continue on, and we do our best to protect life… not only the physical aspect of life, but most of all the life of hope, of enthusiasm, of energy within and of human dignity; a life which bears the union and solidarity among peoples, of happiness and understanding with each other. Oh, how beautiful it is All of these beautiful things bring me happiness as a missionary, and give me the will to be more faithful and perfect. May God help us!” (Belèm on Oct. 8 1976).
