P. Giorgio Gagliani

Il 4 agosto 2003, alle ore 14,26 (ora locale) nei pressi di Heitorai (Goias, Brasile), in un incidente stradale ha perso la vita il P. Giorgio Gagliani. In una curva pericolosa l’auto che lui guidava, è finita nella corsia opposta dove stava sopravvenendo un camion: l'impatto è stato violento e fatale. Il confratello aveva 68 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Modena il 27.2.1935.
Cresciuto in una famiglia numerosa e profondamente religiosa che ne curò la formazione negli anni delle elementari, delle medie e dei primi due di ragioneria, nel 1951 entrò tra i Saveriani a Zelarino dove frequentò le due classi del ginnasio superiore. Proseguì quindi l’iter formativo saveriano con il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli (53-54), il Liceo a Desio (54-57), il prefettato ad Alzano Lombardo (57-58), la Teologia a Parma (58-62). Fu ordinato presbitero il 15.10.1961.
Di questi anni di formazione spiccano i giudizi sempre positivi dei suoi Superiori che confermano, in un certo senso, quello della presentazione al Noviziato: «È evidente a tutti la sua bontà e la sua forte vita interiore. Molta generosità… Serio in tutto» (Luglio 53).
Alla fine della Teologia era dichiaratamente disponibile per qualsiasi obbedienza: «… vorrei proprio fare la Volontà del Signore e mi sembra che esponendo i miei “gusti” non sarei più abbandonato completamente nelle sue mani…sentirei una certa inclinazione alla vita di educatore nelle case apostoliche…» (23.10.61).
Destinato all’Italia, fu Direttore Spirituale ad Ancona (62-67) a Piacenza (67-70) e Rettore ad Alzano (70-77). Si trattò di una esperienza che egli definì «fondamentale perché sono passato da ‘giovane con idee innovatrici’ ad ‘anziano conservatore’. Eppure io son convinto di aver lottato decisamente, ma serenamente, per le stesse idee… il fatto è che all’inizio ad Ancona si lottava per aprire i nostri seminari alle idee del Concilio che dava nuovi orizzonti; e alla fine ad Alzano si lottava per chiudere il passo alle esperienze devianti» (25.12.1980).
In effetti il P. Giorgio era ─ sono espressioni sue ─ «...esigente… determinato contro ciò che non può coesistere colla mentalità evangelica…[perché] una buona formazione si basa sul sacrificio fondamentale sia del formatore che dell’allievo».
Nel 1977 fu destinato al Brasile Sud. Lavorò a Londrina (78-82), Itaquera (84-86) e Guaianazes (86-96). In profonda sintonia con le novità della stagione postconciliare, scandite dalle Assemblee continentali di Medellin e Puebla, il P. Giorgio si impegnò, a livello di Chiesa locale e di Congregazione, per «la partecipazione reale dei laici ai ministeri; la collegialità nella conduzione della Chiesa; la struttura familiare della Chiesa, la critica profonda al sistema economico-politico capitalista come antievangelico…» (11.4.98); soprattutto si dedicò con passione, con la Casas do meninos, ad assicurare lo sviluppo integrale della persona anche per i minorenni meno fortunati.
Nel 1996 chiese ed ottenne di andare missionario in Africa, perché l’Africa rappresentava nel suo «essere missionario l’attesa non compiuta» (14.2.1996). Fu per 6 anni a Douala-Ndog Passi, impegnato nella prevenzione e reinserimento sociale dei “minorenni a rischio”, e in una molteplicità di iniziative sempre più assillanti e gestite con modalità non sempre comprese e condivise dai confratelli.
Per questo nel 2002 accettò di lasciare il Camerun, a condizione, però, di avere «la possibilità di continuare una attività in missione finché le forze lo permetteranno» (16.7.2002). Dall’autunno del 2002 era a Itaberai (Brasile), nella parrocchia affidata alla cura pastorale della sua Diocesi di origine, Modena. Desiderava mettere a frutto la sua esperienza creando collegamenti tra i gruppi di volontariato di Brasile, Italia e Camerun con i quali lui era in contatto.
Il Signore accolga nel suo regno questo suo servo generoso e appassionato.

On August 4 2003, at 2.26pm (local time) Fr. Giorgio Gagliani died in a car accident in the vicinity of Heitorai (Goias, Brazil). The car he was driving ended up on the wrong side of the road in a bend and collided with an oncoming truck: the impact was violent and fatal. Born in Modena on February 27 1935, Fr. Giorgio was 68 years old.
He grew up in a large and deeply religious family, which took care of his formation until he joined the Xaverians in Zelarino, in 1951. He moved to S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate (1953-54) where he professed Religious Vows on Sept 12 1954, High School in Desio (1954-57), a year as prefect in Alzano Lombardo (1957-58), and Theology in Parma (1958-62). He was ordained priest on Oct. 15 1961.
During his formation years his Superiors gave outstanding reports on his person and performance, confirming the good things said about him in the presentation to Novitiate: “His goodness and robust inner life are obvious to all. He is very generous ... and serious in everything he does” (July 1953).
At the end of Theology he made it clear that he was ready to obey in all things: “... I wish to do the Lord's will and I feel that by expressing my own 'wishes' I would not be abandoning myself completely into his hands ... I do feel a certain inclination towards education in the minor seminaries...” (Oct. 23 1961).
Assigned to Italy, he was Spiritual Director in Ancona (1962-67), Piacenza (1967-70), and Rector in Alzano (1970-77). It was an experience he described as “fundamental because from being a young man with innovative ideas I became an 'elderly conservative.' Yet I am convinced that I fought resolutely, but serenely, for the same ideas ... the fact is that, in Ancona, we were fighting to open up our seminaries to the ideas of the Council which had given us new directions; by the time we reached Alzano, our battle was against divergent experiences” (Dec. 25 1980).
In his own words, Fr. Giorgio was “... demanding ... resolute against everything that cannot coexist with the gospel mentality... [because] a good formation is based on fundamental sacrifice on both sides, formator and student”.
In 1977 he was assigned to South Brazil. He worked in Londrina (1978-82), Itaquera (1984-86) and Guaianazes (1986-96). In profound harmony with the novelties of the post-Conciliar period, marked by the continental Assemblies of Medellin and Puebla, Fr. Giorgio committed himself, at the levels of local Church and Congregation, to "the real participation of the laity in the ministry; collegiality in the management of the Church; the family structure of the Church, profound criticism of the capitalistic economic and political system as something that is profoundly anti-evangelical...” (April 11 1998); above all, he dedicated himself passionately to the "Casas do meninos", in order to ensure the integral human development of less fortunate children.
In 1996, at his own request, he was sent to Africa because that continent represented “the unfulfilled expectations of his missionary vocation” (Feb. 14 1996). He spent 6 years in Douala-Ndog Passi in Cameroon, engaged in the protection and the reinsertion of "children at risk.”
Consequently, in 2002, he asked to leave Cameroon, on the condition, however, that he be given “the possibility of continuing in mission activity as long as I have the strength to do so” (July 16 2002). From the autumn of 2002 he was in Itaberai (Brazil), in the parish entrusted to the pastoral care of Modena, his home diocese. He wished to put to good use his experience by creating volunteer links between Brazil, Italy and Cameroon.
