P. Pietro Marchesi era nato a Pozzomaggiore (Sassari).il 20 febbraio 1952 ed era entrato nella nostra Casa di Macomer il 2 ottobre 1963. Veniva da una famiglia biblica dove con la semplicità e l'austerità della vita si erano conservati i tesori della fede e della bontà. Un suo fratello divenne sacerdote nella Congregazione dei Preti della Missione e toccò proprio a lui dare l'ultimo saluto alla salma del P. Pietro il giorno dei funerali.
P. Pietro aveva emessa la sua prima professione a S. Pietro in Vincoli il giorno 8 settembre 1969 e fu ordinato sacerdote il 25 settembre 1977.
Dopo la conclusione degli studi teologici venne mandato a Brescia come animatore interno: un compito a cui egli si accinse con entusiasmo. Non molto tempo dopo la sua andata a Brescia, però, si manifestarono i primi sintomi del male che lo avrebbe portato alla tomba: un tumore maligno alla gamba sinistra.
Si sottopose a tutte le cure possibili e, lo scorso anno, nel tentativo estremo di bloccare il male, gli fu amputata completamente la gamba. Sia prima che dopo l'operazione si mostrò sereno e fu fonte di speranza e di pace per gli ammalati della sua corsia nell'ospedale.
Dopo l'operazione, si notò un certo miglioramento e sembrava che il male fosse stato superato: invece esso si diffuse inesorabilmente fino a che intaccò anche i polmoni. Negli ultimi mesi faceva fatica a respirare, ma restò sempre sereno.
Il 6 giugno scorso, su desiderio della famiglia, ed in modo particolare di sua mamma, si portò al suo paese. Passò i pochi giorni che lo separavano dalla morte con i suoi cari. Passò l'ultima sera conversando con i suoi fratelli fino a tarda notte.
Venne a mancare nelle primissime ore del 14 giugno 1985 durante il sonno. La prima ad accorgersene fu proprio sua mamma che dormiva nella stessa stanza.
I funerali a cui parteciparono molti nostri confratelli e tutta la popolazione del paese, furono una dimostrazione della simpatia che godeva tra i suoi. La sua salma riposa nel paese natio. Il suo cammino sacerdotale lo aveva portato sulle strade della sofferenza e del dolore ed egli le aveva percorse con profondo spirito di oblazione al Signore.

Fr. Pietro Marchesi died at his family at Pozzomaggiore on June 14 1985, after a long battle with cancer. He was 33 years old, born at Pozzomaggiore (Sassari) on Feb. 20 1952.
He entered the Xaverians at Macomer on Oct. 2 1963, coming from a family rich in faith and goodness. Also his own brother was a priest of the Congregation of the Priests for the Mission. After the year of Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli, he professed religious vows with the Xaverians on Sept. 8 1969, and was ordained a priest in Parma on Sept. 25 1977.
After the conclusion of his theology studies, he was sent to Brescia as formator, a service which he employed with much enthusiasm. Unfortunately, soon after, the first symptoms of cancer appeared in the left leg. He underwent all possible venues to defeat the cancer, even the complete amputation of his left, but to no avail.
Through this entire ordeal, Fr. Marchesi was serene and an example of hope and peace, especially for the sick who were in the hospital with him. In the last months of his life, he experienced breathing difficulties, because the cancer had spread to the lungs.
Reflecting on this period of sickness, a confrere wrote about Fr. Pietro: “Whenever there was a celebration of the Eucharist or other common prayers, Fr. Pietro would say that he never asked the Lord for miracles. He asked instead to pray that the Heavenly Father would give him the grace to accept His will, and fulfill it. Oftentimes, when he was alone, he would pray in silence, or read the Bible. He commented that the Bible was written just for him.”
A week before his death, he moved to his own family at Pozzomaggiore, so that his mother and family members could assist him. He died in the early hours of June 14 1985, in his sleep. His own brother, a priest of the Congregation for Mission, celebrated the funeral liturgy, together with Xaverians confreres, and most of the people of the town, who showed much love for Fr. Marchesi.
He was laid to rest at Pozzomaggiore's cemetery. Fr. Marchesi's priestly journey meant physical pains and sufferings, yet he walked that path with a deep spirit of self-sacrifice to the Lord.
In one of his poems, he wrote: “…Experience of Christ. It’s painful to cut… God calls whenever he wants… ever in the right moment… always at proper times… God calls whenever you are at peace… whenever you think He would have nothing to ask you… whenever you think, or at least you convince yourself, that He does not need you… that you are not up to par… This call, is the sole fruit of the love of God..”
